- People like to think that using Bitcoin makes your transactions anonymous. But buried in last month’s special counsel indictment of 12 alleged Russian spies is an explanation of how law enforcement used the blockchain, the network which facilitates bitcoin transactions, to track and identify the suspects using their cryptocurrency transactions.
Because every bitcoin transaction is recorded on a public ledger, law enforcement can trace back bitcoins to its origins. Once you trace enough steps back, an investigator could typically find some place where bitcoins were purchased or where bitcoins were used to purchase a service. This is key, because bitcoin sellers, like Coinbase, or places that sell services, typically require some personal information. With the power of subpoena, law enforcement could obtain that personal information, making it easier to link a bitcoin transaction to a real person, interad of a random series of numbers and letters.
One blockchain developer, Tim Cotten, was even able to trace Bitcoin purchases back to Russia’s intelligence agency, the GRU, using only public information. And he agreed to show VICE News how almost anyone with a bitcoin wallet could do something similar.

Tor was breached when they stopped silk road if I'm not mistaken. It helps in remaining anonymous but if the feds wanna find you they'll get your digital footprint unless you act like Kaczynski
Tor Network isn't that secure but the ways you can communicate through via text in PGP combined with Tor, Throw in OS - Tails to stop Java and flash and all the other scripts and they'll have a hard time proving anything.
Then there's the scale of whatever you're doing. If you're a big fish you'll be watched far more than Johnny Xanax.

I am no expert but if I did something illegal with bitcoin I would use a vpn and then "wash the bitcoin" in to Eth and then convert it back to bitcoin. You don't need to use an exchange site where you have to register to be able to do that.

Anonymous, but every transaction is on the blockchain and accessible by everyone. So fully traceable. Also, there are several cryptos which aren't traceable, like dash, zcash, monero. All you have to do is launder money through those cryptos and you'll obscure your activities even if you deal with bitcoin.
