    I'm doing this exact swap, 86 4 door dually. This swap is really easy! I've been trying to figure out a game plan. Thanks for the Trans heads up, I've got to run a auto for the wife. Now I know exactly what motor/trans I want. The fuel tanks was another I was unsure about, you answered that. Cool build! SUPER helpful video! Thank you.

      @Sam’s Trucks what do you know about the 12v motors out of school busses? Are they worth the hassle, I'm finding them with lower miles at good prices, VE pumps, which I want. Will the A518 bolt up?

    I have a comment to add this really is a pain in the butt… my and my sons project 79 Chevy dually crew 2wd with Cummins 12v 6BT ve pump swap was done already but but….. the transmission is still the TH400 with mods like gear vendors overdrive kit, we’ve confirmed it powers up ⬆️ now vacuum for our 400 trans is the question our only option is cable operated modulator for the trans per all my research

    I'm in the middle of this swap. Going into a 1983 K30 auto truck. Also going to manual. My engine has some weird stuff on it though because it came out of a box truck. No vacuum pump just a BIG power steering pump. Some big Ford alternator. The fan hub, alternator and AC compressor are in different places than the ones that came in pickups. So far I haven't had to notch the frame or sway bar cross member. But the trans isn't in yet so that will rock the engine forward. I've been dreading setting up the hydraulic clutch linkage though. I KNOW it's going to be a pain.

    • @samstrucks
      @samstrucks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re not wrong. Make sure you find a factory Squarebody clutch petal setup.

    • @Bloodbain88
      @Bloodbain88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@samstrucks I got a question for you as you've done a few of these swaps, and driven them as well. I have the same engine mount and cross member kit that you talk about. Have you needed to do anything to reinforce the engine cross member? Mine only has 2 bolts on the bottom of each frame rail, and 2 larger bolts going through the engine mount brackets. My truck is a 1 ton so I understand the frame is slightly thicker. But that doesn't seem like enough to bear the weight and torque of the diesel with essentially only 8 bolts. 4 on frame and 4 on engine mount pockets. My engine is labeled as outputting 230HP and 605ft lbs of torque from the factory. It has the "straight" transmission cross member that I'm going to modify to fit. And it looks pretty beefy. With all new high strength Energy Suspension mounts. But that seems like a lot of weight and torque to put on those cross members. Thanks.

  • @poonbandit9924
    @poonbandit9924 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The NV4500 has a bolt on bell housing, so if it was impossible for you to find one with the dodge bell housing on it but you were able to order a dodge bell and had a Chevy NV4500 you would be fine. Only thing to make sure of is the actual bolt pattern for the bell to transmission being the same.

      I was looking for a gear venders or the older Doug Nash overdrive unit.
      A few years ago I had my 2004.5 Ram auto trans rebuilt. The rebuilder said ALL Dodge automatic transmissions do not last behind even a stock Cummins. When I dropped off my truck... he had 14 Cummins trucks there, all autos.
      I asked about a possible future Cummins swap with my built th400. He said no way. What kills the autos is the Cummins torque. TH400 can't hold it even on a mild stock Cummins.
      So my recommendation is get the Dodge manual trans or matching auto trans and if you go auto prepare for an inevitable rebuild (with upgrades).

    Those Chevy gasoline tanks are galvanized on the inside and the diesel tanks are not, that much is fact. They say, the injection pump will fail prematurely due to microscopic pieces of the galvanized layer making its way through the filters and into the injection pump. Opinions will differ on that of course. Just FYI.

    Good video Sam! I have an ‘01 2wd Duramax/Allison Chevy with no engine or transmission in it. I have the old engine and trans on the shelf. Blown trans and blown head gaskets. I have an ‘09 school bus with the 6.7 Cummins/Allison combo. I believe I can do the wiring as I’ve done a Subaru into a buggy swap. I’m considering taking the bus drivetrain, swapping the GM tailshaft housing onto the bus trans and running with the swap. I’m not sure if the engine will clear the radiator even with electric fans, because the SAE bellhousing adapter is quite long. It sure would be nice to keep the stock driveshaft! Any 6.7 experience / things to be aware of before I tear down?

      The lockup on the 47rh vs the A518 is a game changer if you can find the 47 then it's much better, only problem is the need for lockup control, so either run a second toggle switch to manually lock it or find a suitable controller.

    very good video sir, I want to swap a 5.9 6bt, for a 1973 Dodge D200 adventure, do you think it's worth it, and do I have to modify the brakes, suspension? Do you recommend me? greetings
