I love how the parts that the Waldhexe take from the children mirror Eodwulf, Astrid and Caleb: Eodwulf's mind, Astrid's sight and Caleb's heart. And how the Empire is built on the blood and bones of the innocent. Kudos to Liam to use narrative telephone to tell a metaphorical story delving further into his character's tragic backstory

What Caleb didn't know is that the child whose heart was taken was able to find love and be able to love again. Eight wonderful people found the child as he came out of the woods and helped him make a new heart. The formerly heartless boy built a home for his new family. And eventually, they defeated the Waldhexe. The land was able to flourish without him, growing on the love that the Family of Nine were able to give to each other and to the people of the kingdom.

Having lived and studied a year in Germany, and generally being a moody boy, Liam captures much of the German (and Germanic, we Danes and the other Scandies have it as well) "geist".
"WILKOMMEN IN DER DUNKELHEIT!" (Till Lindemann, 2009)
"Das feuer liebt mich" (Till Lindemann 2005, paraphrasing a cautionary German children's tale from 1845 "Die gar traurige Geschichte mit dem Feuerzeug" - "The Very Sad Tale with the Matches": A girl plays with matches, accidentally ignites herself and burns to death)
