  • There is nothing wrong with using notes during a speech. In fact most famous speakers you see are either using teleprompters or some form of notes during their performances.
The problem is that most people use notes as a handicap instead of a tool and end up "reading" instead of "performing" which then in turns brings down the overall quality of the presentation.
Here are tips on how to use notes effectively during a speech.
Public Speaking, Presentation Skills, and Toastmasters tips from a fortune 500 corporate trainer, award winning keynote speaker, and positive energy aficionado.

The folding paper or palming the paper to avoid shaking was brilliant!

Thanks Jonathan, your tips are great. You migh be interested in how I use notes. Instead of using palm cards I use a large A4 sheet of paper (would that be letter for US people?) but instead of holding them in my hand I put them on a lectern . I place the lectern off to one side from my speaking position and angled towards me. I use bullet points, as you suggest, and print them in very large font so I can read them easily, often without looking directly at them.. Sometimes, for a very long or complicated speech, I use 2 sheets of paper, placed side by side on the lectern so that I don't have to touch them while speaking.. I once had someone say to me after a speech that she was amazed that i could remember all that detail without using notes when I had been using notes all the time.

I memorized my first speech for class. I didn't know I could use notes, so now I'm here. Thanks for the advice :) ...I almost made the mistake of using giant index cards.

Thank you so much for these videos. In my club, notes of any kind past the first three speeches are more or less discouraged, but I think I can do the folded-up piece of paper. I'm going to try that, especially since my memory isn't quite what it used to be.
I will be sharing your page with the rest of my club. Subscribing.

Hey Jonathan, Great Advice. I Love your points especially when you discourage the use of large papers. However, I think to be more professional; instead of using ordinary small papers, one could use cure cards printed with one's brand at the back( this is the side that the audience will be seeing). The speaker, can jot down his or her points on the other side. This way, the challenges you have highlighted will be sorted and we will also be able to sell our brand and look more professional. Please tell me what you think of this. Thanks Jonathan, keep up the good work!

Excellent way to deliver a story Jonathan. I am an ex DTM Toastmaster and I have seen many accidents when people use big notes. The wind blows the note off the lectern or the notes fall on the floor, disarranged.
Very hard to tear oneself away from notes but the video is correct. Use dot points because you probably know what you want to say but are afraid to let go of notes. I have an International zoom conference next week so I must use dot points. Wish me well1

Great thanks. What is the best way to write my notes on such a small piece of paper? What you say is great, but how do I get 5-6 minutes worth on that small piece of paper? This is where I'm struggling to get away from lots of notes which are a securuity blanket for me!? Help!!!
