- There is nothing wrong with using notes during a speech. In fact most famous speakers you see are either using teleprompters or some form of notes during their performances.
The problem is that most people use notes as a handicap instead of a tool and end up "reading" instead of "performing" which then in turns brings down the overall quality of the presentation.
Here are tips on how to use notes effectively during a speech.

Hi everyone! I’ll be updating more frequently. Please let me know if there are any specific topics regarding public speaking and presentation skills that you would like me to cover. Thanks for all of your support.
I have a speech in church Tomorrow and trying to find help on TH-cam randomly ran into this and this is the best video ever! Love it liked and subscribed.
Thankyou for teaching this in a way that is not patronising🎉 As an autistic student I struggle with presentations and this is exactly the guidance I needed🩵
Sir, you've got the swag.
As a teacher's perspective, this is going to be super useful for me and my students in class with presentations! Thanks a lot!!
I have a presentation next week. Nervous about it but I've been practising too
Thanks for the great video!
The folding paper or palming the paper to avoid shaking was brilliant!

Thanks Jonathan, your tips are great. You migh be interested in how I use notes. Instead of using palm cards I use a large A4 sheet of paper (would that be letter for US people?) but instead of holding them in my hand I put them on a lectern . I place the lectern off to one side from my speaking position and angled towards me. I use bullet points, as you suggest, and print them in very large font so I can read them easily, often without looking directly at them.. Sometimes, for a very long or complicated speech, I use 2 sheets of paper, placed side by side on the lectern so that I don't have to touch them while speaking.. I once had someone say to me after a speech that she was amazed that i could remember all that detail without using notes when I had been using notes all the time.
I memorized my first speech for class. I didn't know I could use notes, so now I'm here. Thanks for the advice :) ...I almost made the mistake of using giant index cards.
Thanks for sharing. I always used to be seeing notes in any presentation. Now I got the points from you . Thanks again.
Thank you so much for these videos. In my club, notes of any kind past the first three speeches are more or less discouraged, but I think I can do the folded-up piece of paper. I'm going to try that, especially since my memory isn't quite what it used to be.
I will be sharing your page with the rest of my club. Subscribing.
Jonathan, I love the way you presented your tips in this video. Most people are a bag of nerves when tasked with giving a speech and I feel that your tips will really help. Maybe you could shed some light on building speeches and credibility. Thanks 😁😁
OK thank you for your advice.
After long time...I've been waiting so long
Thank you for the great tips. I'm going for a company panel on March 22nd and this will be useful
Am I the only one who tends to forget what you wanted to say during a speech if you don’t write it down
Just takes time... repetition until it’s built in your memory 🙏
That was amazing! I have a presentation tomorrow and gosh! You helped me 100%! I am so ready at my presentation! A bit nervous but I think I can do it from your help!!
howd u do?
thanks its so helpful
you are an awesome person, loved this video
Good Work Jonathan ... Thank you
Really helpful alot and learnt it for school
Watching this a day before my anchoring in my house assembly😅😶🌫️
Great tips!
Hey Jonathan, Great Advice. I Love your points especially when you discourage the use of large papers. However, I think to be more professional; instead of using ordinary small papers, one could use cure cards printed with one's brand at the back( this is the side that the audience will be seeing). The speaker, can jot down his or her points on the other side. This way, the challenges you have highlighted will be sorted and we will also be able to sell our brand and look more professional. Please tell me what you think of this. Thanks Jonathan, keep up the good work!
Thank you..
Nice Video. My suggestions for future videos: How to use descriptive language. How to use stories effectively.
Keep up the good work!
Voice modulation and body language. Voice modulation well explained with examples for joy, sorry, sad
What happens if I can’t perform without looking at the whole scripts?
Good info
you the best
Excellent way to deliver a story Jonathan. I am an ex DTM Toastmaster and I have seen many accidents when people use big notes. The wind blows the note off the lectern or the notes fall on the floor, disarranged.
Very hard to tear oneself away from notes but the video is correct. Use dot points because you probably know what you want to say but are afraid to let go of notes. I have an International zoom conference next week so I must use dot points. Wish me well1
I Need my notes for tomorrow. 2nd presentation of my adult life. Lol
Great thanks. What is the best way to write my notes on such a small piece of paper? What you say is great, but how do I get 5-6 minutes worth on that small piece of paper? This is where I'm struggling to get away from lots of notes which are a securuity blanket for me!? Help!!!
Thanks for the hand actions! Could have used a background beat.
got a speech competition tomorrow, time to start practicing a day before the contest 😋
Good luck! You got this!
Thanks 😊
Nice
Thank you 🙏
is 3x5 or4x6 better?
I NEED large index cards, I need much larger spaced out print before I can read it. Also, I need to take my time when I speak, BUT I ONLY HAVE SEVEN MINUTES! Help!!!
how did it go
asan
agreed
But ill still use my phone and put it on the airplain mode to avoid recieving text, call and all
That works as well... unless its a huge phone haha
Or you can just cut and write in each paper Thank you
Your hand gestures are very distracting and repetitive
