After receiving many comments on a previous video, today we're taking a look at how to make Windows 10 look like Windows XP! And yes, I'm pleased to say that this works on the May 2019 Update!

that's called evolution :-D but it's true that GUI from XP reminds me I am on stable good and user friendly OS and it can be important placebo effect for many people, Win 10 is very easy to crash and it's definitely not user friendly, but changing of window design can't change it. :-)

I like how when i had XP i always tried to make it look like Vista/7/Metro but when i got W10 i try everything i can to make it look like older systems.

As much as I'd like to disagree, 10 is actually better than XP. 10 can run more things and it's more secure.

There actually is a WindowBlinds theme named "True Classic" to do just that, unfortunately you have to pay for WindowBlinds though. :/

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole presentation, and you are a good tutor, speaker, and have a pleasant voice.
I'm a 61 yr old geezer, bought my first ( old xp ) pc at a garage sale, on which I discovered Craigslist! Haven't learned a lot since then, but still miss the xp experience, so I'm glad I looked into the possibility of retrograding my current pc. Yours is the first TH-cam channel I've liked, subscribed, hit the notifications icon, and commented on. Thanks for the tutorial, I'm sure I'll learn a lot, watching more of your presentations.

You can also change taskbar to an image there is a windows xp taskbar on the classic shell site
classic shell is no longer developed and is not compatible with 1903

For the issues described at the end with the folders - I just deleted those “special” Windows 10 Folders all together and replaced them with regular folders. Then you can go in and change those folders’ icons to XP specific ones (Movies, Pictures)
You forgot about sound effects, but great video as always.

1. Download a .zip file with all the sounds
2. Go to the start search bar and type c\Windows\Media
3. Extract the files In the folder
4. Open control panel and go to sounds
5. Go to sounds in sounds and have fun customizing the sounds

Anyone knows how bad the consequences can be when installing the theme patcher? I'm hesitating to install it...
Yep. It can completly break your PC. Literally. I recommend using windows blinds instead, it's look way better and is way safer

Just be sure to make a restore point before installing the software, if you have any issues you can always restore your PC back to that restore point. Even if that was to all completely break, you would still be able to simply use a windows 10 installation media to run things like "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth" or "chkdsk" to replace the system files modified by the program with a vanilla windows 10 copy.

This *might* be a way to customise a specific folder to have a customised icon:
I'm not using win10, so I can't verify if it will work that way. But it does work in win7 at least, and is also the way to do it in OG XP. In the folder that you want a custom icon for, create a text document called desktop.ini, and add:
[.ShellClassInfo]
IconFile=iconfilename.ico (this can be a path as well, but I keep the icon in the folder).
IconIndex=0 (if you have an .icl file with multiple icons inside, this sets which one to use, 0 for the first)
ConfirmFileOp=0 (I don't remember/know what this does)
You also have to set the system attribute on the folder for the icon to show up, and you can set the desktop.ini file to hidden if desired. In XP and 7, after setting this attribute it the new icon shows up instantly, even before a restart of explorer.
For those reading that don't know how to set attributes: Open cmd.exe (start -> run, type cmd, ctrl-shift+enter for admin command prompt), cd x:\somewhere\ (or one level up from the folder you want to change, x is the relevant drive letter eg. c:\) ie: CMD (admin) -> attrib +s foldername

Another reason Windows 7 was better for customization. The Luna themes for Windows 7 look pretty much EXACTLY like XP.

that was so great! I am an 'elder' and just got the new win 10 and hate trying to figure
out everything and was so comfortable with the xp look and knew how to navigate
around things just fine. 'We' do get set in our ways (not only elders I know) but if we
are just regular users, we like fast and user friendly. Many people don't even use their
new computers much because of the new systems and learning 'one more thing'!
Of course I didn't read the comments down below until after I watched your video 'my bad', and now will check out the newer one you have the link to before I do anything.
Now, I just wish someone would tell me how I can use all my photoshop/art/web design
programs on win 10 which I use for my photography, art work, and for my many websites which I have used dreamweaver to create. Seems everything now is 'on the cloud' and the
greedy creators make you pay every month to 'use' their programs which I can't afford to do and makes me mad at them to do this to all of us. Anyway, thanks so much again, and this gives me hope I can actually 'want' to sit down and use the new computer....lol

Microsoft really needs to implement these old themes, icons and system sounds into newer versions of windows. Never understood why they're so hell bent on preventing you from doing that.

If UltraUXThemePatcher isn't working properly for you, and the Theme doesn't look right, do the following:
Go to Windows>System32, find the two files "themeui.dll" and "uxinit.dll" and take ownership of them both. Then, uninstall UltraUXThemePatcher, reboot, reinstall it, and reboot again. Then try patching the themes one more time.
That should fix it.

Hey, Michael Windows by default caches the icon tables for the quick menu bar for performance reasons. That’s the reason you didn’t see a change at 27:24 if you have any other questions feel free to ask I’ve been able to make Windows 10 look like something straight out of the future.
The explanation of how to make Windows 10 look like XP took WAY longer than it would have to actually install XP on your computer.

The XP Metallic theme was the old name forSilver, which did later appear in XP

I don't recommend patching the system, I recommend ticking "Title bars and window borders" in the color preferences

I really recommend against using UltraUXThemePatcher like most people think you should, I recommend SecureUxTheme off of Githib which, according to the author is future-proof due to not relying on specific memory maps and can be installed and uninstalled safely/without breaking Windows.
Instead of changing icon for every folder you could just modify imageres.dll and/or shell32.dll and replace all icons with XP versions - it will work system wide 8)
When you laptop basically can’t run anything so you make it look like XP for the full experience.
A good method to make the icons change is to copy the imageres.dll from xp and boot into a windows 10 recovery cd and use that to replace the windows 10 imageres.dll with the xp one. I also believe there are third-party tools to do this with. Just a suggestion, try it in a vm in case SHGINA.DLL and other files get corrupted without the correce imageres. I know this works to get windows 7 icons though.
It would be absolutely lovely to get the old XP theme "Old Factory" to run on Win 10.

I tried on making my Windows 10 system to look like Windows XP and it worked perfectly fine until a build update killed it and my installation of Windows. After that and reinstalling Windows again, patching the system yet again, it broke a second time and I had no choice but to reinstall Windows entirely. This is why I don't patch my system anymore and it's all thanks to Microsoft and Windows 10.
I patched my system and all but the Windows XP themes do not apply to the bars! Everything else works but I cannot get the x button/etc to work.

Could be real cool with something for Win10 -> Win 7. I've had some issues with getting a proper Aero working. The windows are always sliightly too square. I can never quite get the window action buttons and the window corners to feel right.

Try customizer god, that programm can change pretty much all icons. And try OldNewExplorer.

Install UxStyle since UltraUXThemePatcher sometimes doesn't work
For changing all icons, you could try reshack shell32.dll. But windows 10 may replace the file with the original one once in a while cause the fingerprint does not match which will indicate to Windows 10 that the file shell32.dll is corrupted.

Doesn't really work anymore. Theme is unable to add windows XP style navigation buttons in the top right these days.
I challenge you to do this to make it look like Vista

guys, I just noticed, and this goes for the ones who doesnt know yet, that if you are in windows 10, to change the taskbar from windows 98, that is the default one this program gives, to windows XP, you have to Right click and it will appear something that says properties, and press it, and you will find that option, make sure to put windows blue and not classic cos idk why the classic one does not work

My only issue with customizer god is, it changes one thing, and changes another random icon. I specifically can change one icon, that’s it, and it has to change like a whole nother one for no reason
Sadly when done this there are going to be some problems with it
1. When you delete something, the box will still be floating on your screen after finishing
2.This gets rid of video/ image preview
but still pretty good video 😀
