Will swan, the guitarist, is the main creative force in the band. He was in 5 other bands AT THE SAME TIME and it started a genre Swan songs. He started his own record label Swan records and a music festival Swan Fest
They've been my favorite band since I was 14. I'm now 28. Welcome to the party Dave! They have a song called 'Don't Tell Dave' and I guess the world heard it.
as far as the name goes, rumor has it that Gavin was the name of a turtle that previous singer Johnny Craig owned when the band started over 13 years ago, and they'd practice in the room he was near and/or kept
Talking about their look (or lack thereof) isn't the running joke that John Mess just looks like some dude they picked up off the street or out of a crowd who just kills it vocally?
Yep, lol. Reminds me also of those vids from their EP days where they were performing in some venue (I think it was for their first show) but Jon couldn’t because he was sick or something, so they just grabbed Drew Winter (the then lead vocalist of Conducting from the Grave) and told him to just scream along to the song, even when he didn’t know the lyrics.
Relatable - I am also jealous and wish I had his voice, haha. I knew one song by DGD, and I finally sat down to explore their music...my GOD I was missing out! I'm absolutely obsessed and have been listening to all of the albums Tilian was involved with non-stop for the past two weeks. I love everything that goes into making music, but my fixation has always been vocals, so it was really exciting to come across Tilian's voice. He's now in my top favorites. And I'm really enjoying watching all of your videos covering them - it's been such a pleasure, so thank you!
As a life long DGD fan, I love when musicians stumble across them. They’re so far out in terms of genre blending and sound - I’m no audio engineer or musical professional by any means, and I love to hear the pros rave about them! Other songs you’ll enjoy: Solo work by Tilian Turn off the lights I’m watching back to the future pt. Hey David! I'm glad you came back around to DGD. I think Prisoner was a really great choice and it's one of my favourite tracks from them recently. They've been kind of mysterous about the origin of their band name, and all I recall for certain is that an old lead singer of theirs named Johnny Craig came up with the name. As for how long they've been together, the original iteration of the band was formed in 2005. Jon Mess, Will Swan, and Matt Mingus are all still around from those days but there has been some shuffling around with vocalists and bass players over the years. I think this is the best the band has ever been, for sure. If you do decide to get around to Alexisonfire at some point (might be a bit of a pipedream, I know), they have a live version of one of their songs at a pro-shot venue called House of Strombo which is a pretty big deal up here in Canada. They finished that show out with a partial cover of "When Doves Cry" by Prince if that is something that might interest you :)
Bruh this is spooky, last night I was going through your old videos and saw the other DGD one from a while back, and thought "aw man I wish he'd do more of their stuff" but thought you would have already. Then today like magic, here's a new DGD analysis, love it
im not a music teacher or anything but I will agree, the way dgd groups together and plays is just insane. All the dynamics and just harmonizing with everything they use in their songs is so perfect and original. But I was only introduced to them like 2 months ago and I already love all their songs. They all seem to just be in sync and know their part in songs, they make it seem like it should be illegal to play this good. *I feel the passion radiating*
So nobody really knows where the name comes from. They kind of have this lore that an ex member had a turtle named Gavin, but I think they said it was false. Also fun fact, there have been 3 different lead singers with the band. I recommend checking out at least one song from the others. They all sound unique.
It was most likely a turtle which Jonny Craig had at one point Source: Jon Mess -> www.reddit.com/r/PostHardcore/comments/3bby8k/dance_gavin_dance_ama/cskri5k/?context=10000 (Doesn't mention Jonny by name but they have in previous interviews) Another one: www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/57i6sr/ama_verified_ama_were_dance_gavin_dance_just/d8s8vxa/?context=10000
The best part of dgd is that nothing they do goes together but some how they blend it so amazingly. Punk, pop, funk, jazz, rock, highs, lows, cleans, screams . They have the ability to litterally do any sound and make it work and no other band has anything close to that blend atleast none i have found. The sound, the look and the music videos. They all blend in everything so well it just works.
Lol you absolutely can scream while laying on the couch. I'd actually encourage you to do it while laying flat on your back because it helps alleviate tension
Just discovered this song for the first time today, first thing I had to do after hearing it was look around for other peoples reactions there is something very beautiful about how this piece was put together.
I’d like to see you analyse and critique Being As An Ocean’s “The Hardest Part Is Forgetting Those You Swore You Would Never Forget”. Their deep, emotional lyrics and the mix of spoken word/poetic hardcore is incredible.
Anthony Green has a pretty unique voice and is worth checking out if you've never heard of him, hes done vocals for Circa Survive, Saosin, and The Sound of Animals Fighting.
I saw them back in December 2019 and they were absolutely amazing live, they sound exactly like their albums! I also met them and they are the nicest guys you will ever meet! They actually take the time to have a genuine conversation with you despite the rush of a meet & greet! 100% an amazing band and great individuals. Can’t wait to see more reactions!
Literally subscribed to this channel after the first DGD reaction video. I’d love to see a reaction to some of the bands from my teenage emo years: Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, Coheed & Cambria... Keep these videos coming!
Just want to say I absolutely love your show and format. I personally would love to see more metal and or hardcore reactions but everything you do here is great!! And yes Dance Gavin Dance are gods in the post hardcore world. Glad you have been introduced !
I’d recommend to check our Dayshell. Any song from them honestly. The lead singer Shayley has one of the most unique voices I’ve ever heard. That on top of him sounding incredible!
Noticed you mentioned Sergio Medina's feature. That man is a phenominal guitarist whos a part of a few bands. Stolas, Sianvar, Nova Charisma and Royal Coda. All of these projects are amazing and will remind you of this kind of music
Just found your channel and heard this song for the very first time. I recently discovered and fell in love with DGD. I really appreciate your passion for music, keep kicking ass! 🤙🏼
Something cool to note about this band is that Will Swan (guitar) and Matt Mingus (Drums) are the only members to be in every album and Jon Mess (screams) was only not in one album due to medical issues. I think Will and Matt are just one of those duos that cant be matched.
Tilian is so great and he had some really good live vocals also. I don’t know if you’ve seen Devin Townsend - Kingdom for EMGtv, but talk about powerful vocals
I only started listening to DGD about three weeks ago and I absolutely love them so far! Prisoner was the first song I heard by them and I was super impressed. It’s been super fun to also see you getting into this band at the same time I am!! I’ve listened to two of their albums so far, which are their recent album Afterburner and their album Mothership, and they are both amazing, I’m super excited to get into more of their stuff! Great reaction!!
***QUICK EDIT: You didn't point it out so I'm not sure if you missed it but towards the end of the song (11:13) that's actually TILIAN SCREAMING! Not Jon! More DGD please! Your Strawberry's Wake reaction is what got me hooked to your channel. I'm been a HUGE DGD fan for while. You should check out some of Tilian's solo stuff as well, Hold On would be a cool one to see you react to. Also, check out Blue Dream by DGD as this one was sung when Johnny Craig was the clean vocals (prior to Tilian). Great song that shows off Johnny well. Awful human, incredible vocalist.
I love how you pointed out Jon Mess, and the bands “sense of humor” . I’m sure someone has already told you, but if you need a laugh, just read some of Jon Mess’ lyrics. Either from DGD or his other band “Secret Band”
Would really love to see ya look at songs done by Jonny and Kurt, all three of them give such different vibes to the band when they perform but it's crazy how much all the music still sounds so uniquely LIKE what Dance Gavin Dance is!
longtime Dance Gavin Dance fan. I'm really happy you decided to review this song in particular, it really shows their character. Great review and talk about the song. I enjoyed the video.
I knew you’d love that one! I’m such a sucker for voices like Jonah’s and Tilian’s. I would love to see you discover Issues - “Drink about it” Cheers!!
Highly recommend checking out the track "Get Out" by Circa Survive. Incredibly stylistic music with high aggressive vocals. The vocalist, Anthony Green, in general would be a great subject.
First time finding this channel. Immediate take aways, lots of weird seemingly random props, weird ass filter? Genuinely insightful and enjoyable commentary.
YOU NEED TO DO MORE DGD, EITHER AFTERBURNER (parallels, nothing shameful, into the sunset) or MOTHERSHIP (on the run, evaporate, frozen one). This is so incredibly important for quality musicianship and supporting the boys!
Commenting for Oceans Ate Alaska’s Hansha. Pls, the drummer is phenomenal Edit: Dayseeker would be a great reaction too. Play it safe with their song Sleeptalk
I know everyone is recommending more songs that have tilian, but I think you should check out songs from eras of Jonny Craig and Kurt Travis in DGD. Lemon Meringue Tie or Happiness!
Well I see a lot of comments on "Inspire The Liars" for a good example of vocal range for Tillian. I agree. As for something like drums, which you kept saying you love in this video, I'd say try "Strawberry Swisher Part 3".
inspire the liars or One in a million. ive been addicted to one in a million for the last week or so. this album is my favorite so far. one in a million has just so much going on in it. ill listen to the drummer in one go, then repeat and listen to the guitar and they both seem clear as day then listen to the whole song and its like pure, controlled chaos. its fantastic.
you should check out some songs with their old vocalists! i'd recommended tree village or me and zoloft get along just fine for kurt and i told them i invented times new roman or lemon meringue tie for jonny :D
Yeeeeeeeeea, you checked 'em, glad you read my (or someone else) comment, happy to see you noticed that perfect vocal pitches and funk style. Now you should really react to new Architects songs - Black Lungs, Animals or (which I recommend more) Dead Butterflies. Last one is really impressive with that orchestra on the background, you will love it. And, as DGD fan, I should say - Inspire The Liars and Son of a Robot. And, probably, We Own The Night (classic one with Tilian). Let's go, man, perfect reviews, I'm waiting for more!
only one thing can come from this. MORE DGD literally my favorite band, and in the past 4 or 5 albums, they haven't put out an objectively bad song. It's just that simple. EVERY SINGLE SONG IS A BANGER. they all sound unique, but put together VERY well. MORE DGD!
"I dont know how long these guys have been together".... It's complicated.
Define "together"...
Its so complicated
Lmaooooo
define “THESE GUYS”
HAHAHAHAHAHA
When he said that, I thought... "okay... I don't know how I'm going to explain this in an easy way"
Not sure who Gavin is, but man is he highly encouraged to dance.
Gavin sings really good in this song! 🔥
he's the Bull :)
@@thecomfortisnow gavin isn't a singer
@@alexiahinojosa5053 I think they were joking...
It's the name of the original singer's pet turtle lol
Inspire the liars is one of their best songs imo
Couldnt agree more. One of my favorites from them
I think it’s the best. And mothership is definitely my favorite album lol
Suuuch a great song. I discovered DGD just last year and I still can't stop listening to them lol
And man of the year.
Mothership album is definitely their best album. Inspire the liars and Man of the year are my favorite
“He’s hitting a high C sharp, you guys, what the hell” did it for me
the screamer actually can be that chill and scream. you should see them live his so chill for a screamer.
You’re exactly right about that lol
Will swan, the guitarist, is the main creative force in the band. He was in 5 other bands AT THE SAME TIME and it started a genre Swan songs. He started his own record label Swan records and a music festival Swan Fest
If you wanna hear more of Tilian’s range, check out their song “Inspire the Liars”
Or deception😌
Or here comes the winner... That g5 hits
Favorite song of all time. I was gonna post the same thing lol
or here comes the winner, pretty much anything off mothership tbh
All fucking amazing choices
You gotta check out Inspire The Liars! Tilian's voice is always great, but I especially love him in that song. I don't know how he can sing like that.
Honestly my favorite song from DGD. His voice is heavenly
tillian is very good at using mixed voice and has insane chest voice range because he naturally has a high tenor voice.
YES PLEASE
FUCKING PLEASE
OMG YES
Please do "Inspire The Liars" next

Yeah. And, hold on tight, Tilian wasn't always there.
Hahah DGD needs to get mainstream, bring rock and roll back to the people.
They've been my favorite band since I was 14. I'm now 28. Welcome to the party Dave! They have a song called 'Don't Tell Dave' and I guess the world heard it.

I agree!! So emotional! You can hear it in Tillians voice
Your head is gonna EXPLODE when you hear One In A Million by DGD
Yo that song is FUNKYYY
THIS right here
I think you'd like ERRA, 2 incredible vocalists and amazing guitar and drum work
Absolutely!! I´d highly suggest reacting to Spirits away, because it is such a good and underrated song. I especially like the lyrical concept.
Yes, Eye of God
Erra, their best is Orchid or Skylines!
Eye of God and Snowblood are my current favorites but those guys don't miss
Ghost Atlas too! It's quite literally ERRA lite
You should do Evaporate or Inspire The Liars by DGD
Yesss all the YESSSS
Ugh, Tillian Pearson and the end of Evaporate... his voice would just melt David’s panties.
Evaporate 100%
Evaporate is suuuuuuch a good one to expose their range
Evaporate is slept on tbh
Jon Mess can absolutely chill on a sofa and sing like that 😂
Tilian also has his own solo stuff which I highly recommend. "Cocky" and "Hold On" are great.
one of my favorites out of his solo stuff is the acoustic version of ghost

Seeing the comments saying do “Inspire the Liars” when they forgot about “We Own the Night”. THAT was the highest I’ve heard him sing.
death of a strawberry! where he goes "I'm ooooover, oooover, ooooverwhelmed" BLOWS MY MIND

Check out “inspire the liars”, “headhunter” or “chucky vs the giant tortoise” by DGD, or for more tilian, check out “Hold on” by tilian himself.
You should do Man Of The Year soon! It's one of their more chaotic yet still incredibly well put together songs
If you could do a video on The Fall Of Troy that would be AWESOME!!! They're another very unique band!!
DGD's We Own the Night has some funk moments, and one of my favourite Matt Mingus' performances
If you watch one of their live shows, Jon Mess doesn’t need to even try to scream he just does it
only one thing can come from this. MORE DGD literally my favorite band, and in the past 4 or 5 albums, they haven't put out an objectively bad song. It's just that simple. EVERY SINGLE SONG IS A BANGER. they all sound unique, but put together VERY well. MORE DGD!
