Man, once LWT kicked in on Friday nights you knew the real weekend was starting. 321, the A Team, Knight Rider, 6 O clock show etc.

Very true. It has a great feeling. I remember sitting down to fish and chips with my parents, and at 5.15pm we knew the weekend had started as LWT was on air.

That switch from Thames tv Euston rd to LWT at the Southbank meant the weekend had started. Great times. There would also be a screen role as the play out centres switch over

Before LWT News launched, it was left to LWT arch rival Thames News to provide the Friday evening news on LWT, something which LWT paid Thames £500,000 a year to do, as they could not be arsed to provide it themselves.

There’s a clip somewhere on TH-cam of Thames handing over to LWT who then handed back to Thames for ‘Thames Weekend News’.

After 20 years of ignoring regional news at the weekends for London, LWT finally launched a proper dedicated weekend news service, only after being given a final warning by the IBA and also with an eye on the upcoming franchise auction due by 1991.

0:46 - technically, that's a frontcap, rather than the continuity ident. Wasn't aware it survived, even regionally, into 1988 - I think later on the titles were, sadly, used without it.
Pam is uncharacteristically all rather hard-news until 13:05... A bit like the first episodes of London Tonight, exactly five years later, in which the presenters were obviously under instruction to shout. Fortunately in both cases things relaxed pretty quickly after the first episodes.

I love the sound of Bromley being a 'granny ghetto' :-D

Unmesh Desai, seen from 4:55, is now a member of the London Assembly.

Pam looks great - just as she does now- a huge loss to our screens.. I feel she was the Female equivalent of the late great Mike Neville.. combining professional presentation with warmth and humanity.. a rare skill.

They brought a “Northern Life” alum to do the weekend news at LWT…
