    Padre Pio Movie- Fr. Meyer Warning
    ~This is a Rated R film with strong language and 2 scenes of nudity.
    ~This is an artistic film that needs interpretation and not a "happy" biographical film about Padre Pio.
    ~If one does not know who Padre Pio is prior to the film it will be confusing; if you do know him and his life, the film will make better sense.
    ~The film does a GREAT job film showing parts of Padre Pio's Life: celebrating Mass reverently, hearing confession, praying, healing people, bilocating, being attacked by the devil, receiving the stigmata, and having Marian visions.
    ~The film shows a scene where satan appears as a naked woman, to temp Padre Pio, this is historically true and happened during his lifetime. Young children, teens, those who are addicted to porn, etc- should not see this film/scene; unless they are spiritually mature.
    ~The film also has a scene where Padre Pio is engulfed by a demonic attack of a thorn bush. Thorn bushes are found also in the life of St. Francis and St. Benedict.
    ~The film has Padre Pio using a curse word toward an unrepentant sinner who also might be demonically possessed.
    ~MUCH of the film is caught up in the lives of the people who live in the town and the struggles they have. The producer is trying to make a connection between Padre Pio's redemptive suffering and their lives. Padre Pio wants to offer his life up for them and their sins and suffering. Padre Pio suffers for them!
    ~Note the number of crosses (crucifixes with no corpus) that are in the film...who is on the cross- Padre Pio! There is a Franciscan tradition of having crosses with NO corpus due to St. Francis (Padre Pio) having the stigmata.
    ~There is a priest who has given his life to drinking, money, and greed and has put himself on the side of politics- his life is in contrast to Padre Pios.
    ~One might want to brush up on the early rise of socialism, the thought of Karl Marx, and class tensions in Italy after WWI prior to the film.

    Somehow, just playing Padre Pio in this film brought Shia L. to Christ and the Catholic Church. If you know anything about his life, this is a miracle in itself. Time will tell if he continues on this path. I pray he will. I will watch it when it goes to Red Box.

      Shia and I both have similar backgrounds growing up Caucasian in LA in Latino neighborhoods during the exact same time. Both in recovery also and very similar upbringings. His podcast he did that went viral hit me hard, I felt his pain. And there are so many people who refuse to see any of us in recovery as people who deserve forgiveness yet they paint themselves as perfect. God is doin work in Shias life that’s for sure.

      He said in an interview it was the Traditional Latin Mass. ❤️
      He said in the scenes of Mass where he's crying, it's really his own reaction to it.
      It was an interview with Bishop Barron, highly recommend it! As a Traditional Latin Mass goer myself, there really is nothing else like it. ❤️ Nothing more beautiful, more sacred, and nothing is more worthy an act of worship of God. It's so nourishing!

    Excerpt from Padre Pio and his friend from Rome: Carlo Campanini an actor., enough said.
    Padre Pio’s advice to never take a part in a movie that had immoral content.
    Padre Pio had explained to Carlo that the people who made such movies would have to answer to God for their actions. That included everyone from the producers to the actors to the carpenters who built the sets to the people who sold the tickets.
    Padre Pio also warned Carlo never to tell off-color jokes or use bad language. If a movie script had even one vulgar word in it, Carlo would not consider being a part of the project. Movie directors and producers could not understand why Carlo was passing up such lucrative job opportunities. When they asked him for an explanation, he simply told them that he was a spiritual son of Padre Pio and that Padre Pio set a very high standard.

      Thanks for bringing this to our attention...and yes, I wish they had opted for "representation " of the nude temptation, rather than being so graphic....but, I think they were trying to capture the true impact such temptation would have had on Padre Pio, and not over simplify it as an easy hurdle he had to jump over....I think that may be why they may have chosen to not hold back and censor....however,...it will diminish the potential audience. If it's done for this purpose, I can appreciate the contents, and hope that God can too...as God,, Himself, allowed this crude content to tempt Padre Pio in real life. I completely agree that obscenity and vulgar language should not form part of our entertainment, save for the purpose of driving a strong point accross. As Catholics, we live in a world where we HAVE to navigate through such vulgarity and circumstance on the daily...we also need to be mature enough in our faith to talk about it and address these shortcomings in the world, without actively participating in their distribution for entertainment/malicious purposes. Well said!!!...thanks, for your post!!

    The movie is a Trojan horse. It's not at all about Padre Pio. It's terribly disrespectful and offensive. One particular scene is very disturbing, perverted, and blasphemous, and has no business being in a film about Padre Pio . Shia Le Beouf was excellent. It's unfortunate the directors/writers used him to disparage Catholicism and confuse people about Padre Pio. One could walk away from this film thinking Padre Pio was mentally ill and suicidal. As for it being artistic, there is nothing new nor creative in this film. I would describe everything about it as sophomoric. The two questionable scenes were unnecessary except to scandalize the viewer. If you still decide to see this film, know that 1. you will be scandalized and 2. you will be waiting through the credits for the film you were promised.

      The film shouldn’t need a commentary to understand it. The Italian actors in the film were good. Shia was not. More is expected from an actor of his caliber. The actors job is to help viewers get lost in a character. Shia didn’t achieve this. The events happening in Italy post WW1 and the Padre character weren’t properly linked. It was like watching two different story lines.

    Thank you Fr. Meyer for an honest review and earnest warning. It should also be mentioned, Shia depicted St. Padre Pio using profanity in one of the movie trailers, which contradicts the Saints actions as a child. St. Padre Pio as a child would flee from those who used such vulgarity! Even more repulsive would such impiety be for the Saint as an Adult! The liberties movie producers use in the name of "Art" should never prevail over Truth! "Art" is a human expression that may be pleasing to the flesh, but potentially dangerous for the soul.

    I agree, excellent commentary. I would add that Satan would tempt Padre Pio and come to him in many forms such as the Virgin Mary, an angel, or his superior. The discernment that Padre Pio would use began with asking the person to declare that Christ is Lord. Satan cannot do this and this became the sign that he was dealing with the demonic. My main criticism is that the focus on the film seems to be more about Socialism than about Padre Pio.

    Thank you for the review. I was so excited to see a movie about Saint Padre Pio and I was even more intrigued when I heard that Shia LaBeouf had converted to Catholicism because of learning about Jesus and his love and mercy.
    Now dear friends, let us remember who we are dealing with. We are dealing with powers and principalities; a battle between good and evil and for our souls.
    Let's not get it twisted. Don't be fooled. Who can "appear " as an angel of light? Who is the great counterfeiter and master manipulator?
    Who brings discord, violence and nudity? It's his calling card.
    Why would having St.Pio using the F word (it's attested by those who knew him that he did not use such language) be necessary?
    Why would one choose to have nudity in a film? Would one not be extremely prudent to not compromise the beliefs of the religion one is portraying?
    It seems to me that Satan is still trying to wrestle with our great Saint!
    A Saint who snatched many souls from Satan's evil grasp!
    A priest who bore the wounds of Christ himself dropping the F bomb! Talk about a sucker punch to the very core of those who know and love this great Saint!
    What's the adage, one bad apple spoils the whole barrel? That's about how I see it. I don't want my experience with Saint Padre Pio tainted in anyway. We are also instructed to avoid the near occasion of sin.

    Just saw the movie. It was awful! First it was not about padre PIO, he was like maybe 15% of the actual movie. They didn't tell the story at all, they just threw you into scenes one after another. No story telling/explanations. The music was horrible, the filming was terrible. Half the movie was blurry and than the best part... It was about politics not Padre Pio. I am so disappointed. They could have told an amazing and moving story. Wow 😮

    • @Hope...M
      @Hope...M ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They probably should have called it something like early trials of Padre PIO.
      It was important to show what made the Padre pio that we've heard of and read about.
      The history of this movie would have made better sense if someone understood the history during that particular time of the world and particularly the rise of Mussolini. If someone comes into it without knowing the history of that time then it's not going to make sense. I thought Shia LaBeouf did a great job. This movie was targeted towards a very small group of people. So if someone didn't understand the different political pieces than fate really don't understand what created the Padre pio as we've come to know him. Without all those pieces of history of Italy at that time and the rise of Mussolini, I seriously doubt we would be speaking about Padre pio at all. It took those trials and tribulations for him to become the person that we think of in hindsight. If someone doesn't know it's true then I'm sure it just seemed very confusing. I don't think this really was the correct title as I mentioned above. Early trials of Padre pio or something. but still if people aren't familiar with history then they aren't going to understand. So again I think the whole movie was targeted towards a very small audience and pretty sure it was just a small low-budget independent film. You guys should have watched the trailer before you watched it at the theater. The trailer show the most of it was about politics and how this affected Padre PIO. I bet if you go back and watch the trailer right now then you notice it revolves around everything you guys are saying didn't really make sense to you. I didn't learn about the rise of Mussolini and world war in school. I just love history and I already knew so understood exactly that this was a period piece film. Please watch more than one trailer before you go spend money at the theater. If it had been a movie about Padre pio's life then it would have been a biopic and about four hours. Most people do not know who he is.

      It really seemed like the movie was trying to make martyrs of socialists and using Padre Pio's name just to draw in a different audience.
      What really bothered was showing the priest that took money blessing the guns that later shot the socialists.
      The music was horrible and nothing seemed to have order. I believe demons have their footprint all over this movie

    Thank you for your review, Father. I found the movie to be very interesting in an artsy clunky way. It's a brief moment in a very young Padre Pio's life from 1916 (around 29 yrs old) when he arrived at San Giovanni Rotondo to 1918 when he received the stigmata (around 31 yrs old), which happens beautifully at the end of the movie. It's probably not going to please all the Rotten Tomato critics or pious Padre Pio devotees. But I learned a lot and found your critical analysis spot on with my take on it, Father.

    • @g.p.ryecroft
      @g.p.ryecroft ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oscar, you wrote, "It's probably not going to please all the ... pious Padre Pio devotees." Shouldn't we all aspire to be "pious Padre Pio devotees"? And if they are not pleased with this film, there is a good reason that we should reflect upon.

    • @BellaJones2010
      @BellaJones2010 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@g.p.ryecroft Well, as mentioned, it was interesting in an artsy clunky way. The political backstory could have been woven much tighter and edited a lot more to support the Padre Pio story. It seemed like it was 2/3 political and 1/3 Padre Pio. This movie doesn't flow with the balance of a movie like, "Fatima" (2020). Perhaps their Original Screenplay Writer and Editor should have been hired. Makes me wonder how limited the budget was since it seemed like a year to get the movie distributed.
      There's no older mature version of Padre Pio and his many miracles, etc. as many know him for. Despite all of this, Shia LaBeouf did an excellent job portraying a young Padre Pio during those 2 years leading to receiving the stigmata. He was ordained in 1910 which puts him at 6 years into his priesthood as this movie starts. I learned of a young Padre Pio's human struggles (demonically tormented, temptations, village politics, etc.) based on his letters to his spiritual director, on which the movie was based. There are some troubling scenes that are understandable. But again, these are scenes recreated from the letters. Also, Padre Pio's life in post-WWI Italy and the politics of the time; which one could see from the movie is history repeating itself in today's world.
