    A lot of these questions are phrased in such a way that it's more about language comprehension than actual knowledge.

      True. For instance sodium is called natrium here in the Netherlands. But interesting non the way.

    I'm a scientist, and I was really impressed by your general scientific knowledge. Great job remembering so much from school science.
    Q40 Hydrogen is so prevalent because it's the main element in stars.
    Q44. This is a very simplistic surface explanation to keep it short, but neutrons can be thought of as having the job of keeping positively charged protons apart to lessen their mutual repulsion. The H atom has only one proton, so a neutron is not necessary in the H-1 isotope, (although there are neutrons in H-2 and H-3 isotopes because they are created through various radioactive decay processes.)
    Q48 Oxygen: often present as SiO2 - silicon dioxide - quartz, the major constituent of many rock types and of the sand formed from their weathering. Many metals, like Al2O3, also exist as oxides/ores.

    Why do Americans prefer multiple choice quizzes so much. When my then 10 yr old began his six-year sojourn at a US school, this was entirely new to him. He hated it, as his (and his sister's) schools back home always set tests requiring full sentence answers, at least after Year 2.

    This was a language test for me, more than a science test.

    A comet is made of ice, wheras an asteroid is rock.
    Also a lot of these questions are more about language rather than anything else

    I think we did pretty well there, Connor. My memory needed jogging a bit but, considering I'm threading my way out of C-PTSD at the moment, that was a high score. So the brain does actually function! Good! May be getting somewhere!

    Light slows down entering water and that's precisely the reason for refraction

    I think question 19 is wrong, or at best misleading. Free fall normally means the condition of an object subject to no force except gravity. But terminal velocity is when the air resistance affecting a falling body increases to match the force of gravity, meaning the object stops accelerating (and hence achieves a steady speed). But if something is affected by air resistance then it can't really be in free fall. I guess he is just using "free fall" colloquially, to mean unsupported fall, without a parachute or whatever, but since it means something specific in physics he shouldn't have said it here, where it is not appropriate.

    remember it's not a good quiz if you already know all the answers

    • @theaikidoka
      @theaikidoka 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, a good general knowledge quiz should include questions that people, on average, are able to answer through general schooling and life experience. It should test a variety of sections of knowledge and include some questions that require greater depth of knowledge but not necessarily specialist knowledge or that defeats the purpose of the quiz. I'd say a good quiz SHOULD be fully answerable if you have; a) a good education; and b) a good memory.

    I got 74/100. Most of which I genuinely knew, with a few educated guesses. Not too bad for being 22 years out of high school. (My weak point is definitely physics. I need to brush up on my joules and newtons!)

    Hey bud, I don't know if you were getting bored or frustrated towards the end, or if it was a technical issue, but it was quite annoying to have skips in the quiz where the answer (correct or otherwise) was skipped. Some of us were looking to find out what our scores were. Thanks.

    If you were puzzled that oxygen was the most common element in the Earth's crust you should realise that it will not be pure oxygen down there, but in compounds with other elements.

    • @bodan1196
      @bodan1196 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Many minerals are "oxides". Aluminiumoxde is one of the more common in the Earth's crust. (Al2O3)
      It is also what makes up, when it's "pure" enough, both safires and rubies.
