Seriously, the Dreamcast is such a rock solid system, I found my old one in the storage space at my house after 10 years of collecting dust and plugged it in and it worked instantly with no problem. Dreamcast is my favorite system!
It absolutely *must* be played with a VGA box to experience its 480p greatness (which was outstanding at the time it was released almost a decade ago). The controls, environments, and lighting effects are totally top-notch. Car models are a little low on poly counts at times compared to more modern racers, but subtle details (like the glowing red brakes which was unique at the time) make up for it.
i remember the bitter forum wars, comparing this to ps2 and gran turismo "it's got ansiotropic filtering!" "but the environment mapping isn't realtime!" ugh, it's a fun game, that's that mattered
I too love the latest Forzas and Gran Turismos on my next-gens, but I always come back to Test Drive LeMans on the Dreamcast. It's one solid racer. They did everything right, from the feel to the look of the game. Thank you Bruno Bonnell.
Jokes aside, you don't win a harem for winning the 24 hr race, you unlock the final car. A second Toyota GT One. Different livery, that is color scheme. The GT Ones are the fastest card in the game. BTW, the only Japanese company to win at Le Mans was Mazda in 1991, with the awesome rotary engine 787b. They banned rotary engines the very next year. When the Mazda engineers examined the engine after the race, amazingly they said she could have immediately run another 24 hrs. Ban that dang car! ...can't have that that! Listen to her on TH-cam...incredible sound. The game also includes Nissan's GT One racer.
Fantastic review. I bought this game back in 2002 for cheap not expecting anything special but it blew me away, it really is a special kind of game but hard to pinpoint why; it just does everything so well and so effortlessly. I think I may head off an play it again now thanks to this video, thanks man =)
The graphics in Test Drive Le Mans bested Gran Turismo & GT2 released on the PSX. It wasn't until Gran Turismo 3 that they beat this games graphics finally.
@@drunkensailor112 They really need to bring that series back, especially now that arcade racers are so few and far between. Imagine driving tuned up JDMs on the Tokyo Highway on a PS5!
PS..,you don't win a harem for winning the full 24 hr race, funny comment, you unlock the best car in the game. Save every 22 laps, change tires & refuel needed.
Nice to have you back, Classic Game Room, and yes what an awesome game Test Drive Le Mans is. What a fantastic review! Miss the game so much and just waiting to buy it again (Sadly it is a little bit more difficult to get in Europe and a little bit more expensive...) You have inspired me to put it right back on my 'Most Wanted games' list. Thanks:-)
Glad I stumbled upon this video - I had heard of Test Drive Le Mans for Dreamcast but had never played it. This looks almost identical to Le Mans 24 Hours on PS2, which is still one of my absolute favorite racing games of all time.
I remember racing the full 24 hours. Set up my steering wheel and pedals and started racing a little after 4 in the afternoon. Only stopped for a pee or munchies break when I pulled into the pits. Drove through the night, the dreamcast internal clock making the sun rise at pretty much the same as outside. Crossed the line some time after 5.30 the following afternoon. Awesome! These days I get tired just trying to plug my games console in.
I played this game a ton and loved it, as well as Test Drive V Rally. Both awesome games for their time. The DC controller was excellent for driving games. RIP Dreamcast, you were great but unappreciated.
Just a quick update Mark, me and my mom just sent in an order for one of the VGA boxes I mentioned before. Can't wait to play Dreamcast in S-video, it's a little blurry now, especially after playing 360 and even Gamecube earlier today. Even then if I have friends over using the TV, now I can hook my DC up to my monitor (19inch widescreen) and my 2.1 speaker set, for a even better experience. Please keep up the reviews Mark, and sorry, I still have not watched your other documentaries.
I played this game a bunch back when it was new. Enjoyed the CGRHD review! As the review mentions, TDLM does have awesome attention to detail. Back then, it was amazing to see all the cars, the photo-real look, the weather and nightfall, and even the tire marks are retained from prior laps.
I didn't get mine for $2.50, but considering inflation and product scarcity $7.70 ain't that bad. Plus, I think I actually enjoyed driving Le Mans in this that i did with GRID or Gran Turismo, and that's saying something.
I bought a second hand Dreamcast yesterday and played some Japanese shoot m ups. This system has many great games. This one looks awesome, incredible they could make it back in those days
If you like this type of Endurance racing, then watch this years 24 hours of Le Mans on June 11-12 live on the internet: eurosport, Justin TV etc, or on your local sports channel
It doesn's say on the box but Test Drive Le Mans is VGA cable compatible. I bought PGR4 after this as racing in variable weather is more realistic even in an arcade racer.
I recently been more involved in video cable quality. I'm still using Composite for my Dreamcast, and I want to upgrade so badly. I'm honestly considering telling my mom "screw possibly getting Rock Band, get me a VGA/S-video box for Dreamcast off Ebay. Thanks for gettin' back to me on that Mark, and as always, tell Dave we miss him. Is there anyway you could record his voice like the interview, and add it to a game review that he's familiar with? It was great to hear his input again.
1:09 Nice reusing of footage from the old CGR. Not complaining, just pointing it out. I consider it a nod to all us CGR fans who can make that connection.
I bought a game last week as well, Giga Wing 2, for the second time at a retro/modern game store. I sold it to them for cash one day when I was broke and just recently had a serious yearning to have it back, so I got it!
Best review of Test Drive Le Mans. Variable weather, sunrise, sunset at Le Sarthe., replays, attention to detail. Awesome racing game. As good as Gran Turismo 3.
Excellent review. That Dreamcast you showed looked brand new! I have 2 Dreamcast and one of them is starting to turn brown lol. I always really liked this game. And looking back on it I miss playing it. I love the sexy Sega graphics and game play.
Well it's not so much that I want the cable itself. Because later on if I get a new TV, with VGA ports (highest I have is Component currently) then I'll be able to upgrade to VGA. In the case that you're unsure what I'm talkin' about. The box has all 3 types of compatible video outputs on one box. You just have to attach all of the additional cables yourself.(Typical standard 2-male end cables.)
Cool review and very funny. The game looks nice too. You can actually do a entire 24hrs race, that has to be an intense endurance test! Oh you do get to save your game at pit stops haha I thought you had to do it straight.
Although they are the same game, the Dreamcast version is more polished overall. The PS2 port isn't even quite as good graphically as the DC one. There's not much in it, admittedly, but that's a true story. And no, please don't think I'm a fanboy who is just bashing the PS2. At the end of the day I had both systems and loved both :) :)
Le Mans 24 Hours (Ultimate Endurance Challenge) as we know it in the UK was one racer that was way, way a head of it's time. The technical wizardry that was put into this has not change much with the evolution we see from driving games of today. Awesome game, very nice if you can display it via the VGA adapter! :)
This game came out when I was 10. Never played it until 20 years later, at 30. It truly is an amazing racing game. The graphics hold up pretty well on the Redream DC emulator. HD resolution and the ability to use a PlayStation or Xbox controller does it justice. I'm so glad I found this game. It's great.
pretty cool. I miss a old ps1 game I had, le mans 24 hours, it was very cool. I had a lot of fun playing test drive for ps1( I dont remember if it was test drive, but I do think it was) and I had lots of fun playing it, altought it was really unrealistic .
look at that sense of speed....what the new generation racers only dream about. this game really made you drift off into a racing mindset. top 5 racing games of all time here.
Sadly it's true, the other day I was in my kitchen, a good 20 feet or so away from my Dreamcast, down a hallway into a room, and I could hear my Dreamcast loading. I must go to a game store that still supports the Dreamcast, there's only one store around that I know of that does, and I have yet to go to it. I was curious Mark, what kind of video/audio connection are you using for you Dreamcast? Standard composite, S-video or VGA? Gonna go play some now..prolly time trial =)
I have been borrowing Black (PS2) from my brother-in-law for a while now. The game is pretty challenging at times, but definetly awesome. It doesn't need a lot of multiplayer modes, and online play to be awesome. Also, the graphics look great for a PS2 game, one of the only games that I would demand playing in component mode on a PS2. See if you can find it.
i must has a special dreamcast then. mine is real quiet. it has a 0 for revision 0 on the bottom though and has the heat pipes. guess they changes a few things between versions.
I can't tell everyone how highly recommended this game is. This was my favorite Dreamcast racer, and was among the greatest racers on any console - ever. I'm a big fan of the Gran Turismo series (haven't had a chance to play Forza 2 yet, since I only recently picked up a 360), but I'd stack this up against any racer to date.
Wow an actual 24 hour race, not a sped up "24 hours" like GRID's and it has save points via pitstops while racing. That's a feature Gran Turismo and Forza should copy. Despite most of America not caring for Le Mans, there are American car companies that do join it like Chevrolet. Btw, if you pronounce "Le Mans" the way you do while in Europe they would either correct or laugh at you.
Mark is right that it's a bit more "arcadey" than Gran Turismo, but that's not a bad thing. It plays extremely well, and the physics are great. It's just a refreshing style of racing game that carves its owne niche in the genre; Different than Gran Turismo, but still fantastic. And it's quite challenging as well!
The connector pins (Don't know if thats the real word lol) needs readjusting every few months, an easy thing to fix, I just open the machine and wiggle a bit with it, otherwise it will just be restarting my games :p. I have no idea what the problem can be for yours though.
Hell Yeah! Le Mans 24 even has the edge over xbox360 GRID. GRID doesn't have weather and pit stops!! I thought Ferrari F355 Challenge on DC was something and yet again CGRHD shows up the DC for having still more top quality titles. I will be adding Le Mans 24 to my DC collection in 2009.
It looks like an XBox game, one of the reasons for that is that towards the end of the Dreamcast's life developers had really got to grips with the hardware, the last generation of DC games, of which this is one, really pushed texture detail (the PS2 never surpassed the DC in that field) and polygon use. Look at games like this, Skies of Arcadia. and Shenmue II and you get a sense of the potential that was squandered when the Dreamcast was discontinued.
I just bought it on ebay for £4.20 all in. If Mark says a Dreamcast Game is game is fun and exciting then there is a good reason to get hold of a copy. And Dreaamcast is still a fun console. I'll pick up any DC game and play for an hour and that's means its still good fun. Admittedly a good 360 game I'll play for three hours at a time, but the DC is still a good time which is the better way of saying it's not entirely outmoded yet at least until they make Shenmue III.
God I loved this game! I think I will break out the DC and play again this weekend. BTW if you turn off the driving assists a lot of the arcadiness goes away...
One thing that people need to know about this version of the game is that it is totally different than the other versions that were released (e.g. the terrible PC and PSX games). This one was made by Infogrames Melbourne House, who later ported the game to the PS2 (though the Dreamcast version was superior in every way). I once heard a rumor that Melbourne house was interviewed and they indicated that they estimated that TD LeMans made use of only about 3/4 of the capability of the Dreamcast.
omg the graphics on this are better then alott of ps2 games, how did the playstation 1 become more famous than the dreamcast, it baffles me holy shit the speed at around 5:40 is immence wow teh 24 hour race that only started getting popular with the latest gran turismo game, ive always thourght it could be interesting i stay up very late soemtimes, but i think if ur gna do a 24 hour race they should make the track huuuuge other wise it could get boring before the 24 is up, great review guys!!
Its funny, 24 cars on track at once is still more than any of the Forza or GT. Plus the class competition aspect is excelient. In the PS2 version the pit crew was very well animated, alot better than GT5 considering GT5 does stuff like reaching through wings and fueling cars while still changing tires at the same time during the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This should really be remade to cover recent years.
I really enjoyed the PS2 version of this game. I chose the PS2 version over this since it had the better PS2 controller, had more options, cars, tracks and was slightly better graphicly. Also in the PS2 version, the pit crew is in there and is fully animated.
@Caparzoshow Yes GT3 looked better. Yet it didn't have weather effects, damage modeling, day to night cycle, and it certainly did not have 24 cars on track at once.
@M1XART yeah plus dreamcast was done smart following closely to the sega naomi, plus using a system developers could actually code lol... the DC, one of the greatest inventions man has made.
@pete9320 True that, but it's not fully focused on Le Mans, it's more focused on being realistic & all that jazz! I wish someone like Sony or CM would release a fully dedicated Le Mans game with official ALMS & LMS licensed cars! GRID 2 perhaps??
GT4 had a 24h Le Mans race but not as many cars and no day to night. Grid has the best 24h Le Man race, no weather change but all 4 car classes, more cars, damage, close competition, and cockpit view. Boss.
This was my absolute favorite racing game on Dreamcast! The 24hr race was amazing!!
Dreamcast was ahead of its time, such a underrated and awesome console.
Crazy as it sounds, Test Drive Le Mans is developed by the same team that gave us the Back to the Future games on the NES... let that sink in!
Akseli Janhunen me too
love ur reviews
They really grew up as developers
I Wonder where they are now.
So?? Not everything Beam Software made was bad
Love your videos please review this game
My Dreamcast still works fine today as in 2000. I also have this game and still play it. Great fun and challenging especially with harder settings.
Seriously, the Dreamcast is such a rock solid system, I found my old one in the storage space at my house after 10 years of collecting dust and plugged it in and it worked instantly with no problem. Dreamcast is my favorite system!

wow teh 24 hour race that only started getting popular with the latest gran turismo game, ive always thourght it could be interesting i stay up very late soemtimes, but i think if ur gna do a 24 hour race they should make the track huuuuge other wise it could get boring before the 24 is up, great review guys!!
Good review, just picked this up at Goodwill. Totally worth it.
If this game was released today they would have to call it " Le Trans" to be more inclusive.
This was uploaded on my birthday!
I really enjoyed the PS2 version of this game.
I chose the PS2 version over this since it had the better PS2 controller, had more options, cars, tracks and was slightly better graphicly.
Also in the PS2 version, the pit crew is in there and is fully animated.
I loved this game on the DC. PLayed it to death.
Looks like a good racer at a very cheap price. Def. picking this one up.
@Caparzoshow Yes GT3 looked better. Yet it didn't have weather effects, damage modeling, day to night cycle, and it certainly did not have 24 cars on track at once.
You need to review Burning Rubber on the Amstrad.
@M1XART yeah plus dreamcast was done smart following closely to the sega naomi, plus using a system developers could actually code lol... the DC, one of the greatest inventions man has made.
This game is cool. I don't own a Dreamcast and I'm a big fan of it
@pete9320 True that, but it's not fully focused on Le Mans, it's more focused on being realistic & all that jazz! I wish someone like Sony or CM would release a fully dedicated Le Mans game with official ALMS & LMS licensed cars! GRID 2 perhaps??
i had Dreamcast and i played this game to the death.awesome game great graphics for the year it got out.
GT4 had a 24h Le Mans race but not as many cars and no day to night. Grid has the best 24h Le Man race, no weather change but all 4 car classes, more cars, damage, close competition, and cockpit view. Boss.
I LOVE this channel
