- Polar Lights/Round 2 1/350 scale Enterprise. The final product of my build project videos. Although I don't consider myself a "Trekie" I am a fan and I have always just loved the look of the Star Trek starship. It had been over 10 years since I had built a scale model, but my business was slow at the time so I was pretty excited to do something so grand and since I had a lot of free time on my hands, I jumped right in. I thought I would have her finished in 2-3 months...I soon realized it would be at least 6. There was a model show for Kingsport's Fun Fest on July 17, and I made that date my goal. That self-imposed deadline would keep me motivated and drive me to finish it rather than loose interest and it be forgotten on a shelf in the closet. I got her finished with less than 2 weeks to spare.
I added a lot of details, such as photo-etched parts from 2 different manufacturers, 2 lighting kits, the main kit being from Trekmodeler.com, but I wanted something to lead the observer's eye into the shuttlebay so I spliced in another sequencing light kit for the runway. I also wanted a display base with some "presence" so after much searching, I finally found the answer right under my nose. A modified aquarium stand from Walmart... I think it fits her very nicely! I have to say Polar Lights just did an amazing job designing this kit. From the beautifully molded parts to the mini-kits like the shuttlebay and arboretum, it's just a fun (although intense) kit to build. When Round 2 re-released the kit they even bettered it! I would recommend buying the Round 2 re-release as it has a MUCH better mounting system for the base(One point instead of 3) and the Aztec decals. I highly recommend building her if you have the time. This build was started in Mid-late January and completed over the July 4th holiday. I estimate approximately 550 man hours went into it. I just wish I had a decent camera to film it with..and maybe a nice shooting rig so I could do some smooth pan shots. I used a Casio point and shoot Exilim, so not much screen quality....maybe if I get or borrow a nice camera I'll do a re-edit.
If you are really bored and have some time to kill, you can see the entire progress of the build in my other videos. I uploaded 10 videos over the course of this build with all kinds of tips and tricks I learned during the construction. Since this video was made, I removed the dish and painted the yellow dish light with transparent red, making for a more screen correct copper color, and it really sets her off in standby mode!
PS...Oh Yeah, It got best of show for the contest I had built it for :) - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
To say this was a professional job is a grave understatement... it's beyond a marvelous build... I can not imagine coming close to this level of realism...
I have just sat and watched the entire build in one night, spellbound.
she is a thing of beauty!
I've been watching all kinds of the 350 scale builds to present and yours still stands amongst all of them!
The ship looks great, nice lighting, very detailed, as Spock would say: "fascinating."
***** OUTSTANDING *****
That's one star ship build that is impossible to beat.
You are definitely the king of modelers.
You should write a book on how you built this. I'd buy 2 copies.
Some of the best scale work I’ve ever seen. Stellar!
STUNNING AND BRILLIANT!! As a first-generation Trek fan, I've always been fascinated with and enchanted by the design of the original Enterprise...she was something so very different and new, and she was, and still is, 46 years later, the most beautiful ship design to ever emerge in the science fiction canon. I thank you for honoring our beloved and most beautiful lady....you've done her proud!!! GENIUS!!
This is by far the best refit Enterprise Model I have seen!!!! Incredible!!!
What a magnificent, meticulous accomplishment you've done Sir. You deserve a Standing Ovation.
AWESOME! This Dutch Trekkie wants one!
This is bye fare the best build video ever.
You have taken the time to build a great star ship, and help anyone going to build in the future.Your building tips and info is so very valuable.Very few stop to show and tell. You have shown those who think they cant.THEY CAN!
You are keeping this hobby and Enterprise alive.
Because of you there will be alot of great star ships in homes in the future.
For your ship and service to the star trek builders we thank you.
My your build and you live long
This is ridiculously impressive, you have an incredible talent! Thank for sharing your experience.
Fabulous work. It is amazing how you made the inside of the Enterprise look even better. The lights are breathtaking. Thank you for showing us your artwork. She’s beautiful. I’m 61 years old and been a Star Trek fan since I was little. That ship never seizes to amaze me. You brought her to life.
Nice job. The detail was great! I'm glad to see that kitty cat was there to supervise & made shure you did things right.
Overwhelmingly amazing! Great Job!
The lounge areas in the ship DEFINITELY look better than Motion Picture's virtually plantless, budget ones. Excellent job.
Simply gorgeous!
The cat shot! Epic. Great modeling skills. Your extensive man hours paid off.
I think that cat I saw was rather interested in your project during those six months.
great work,
This SCALE 1/350 seems to me the BEST in space modeling and your realization are very, very nice, man and the base of the beautiful ENTERPRISE is Fantastic, really.YOU and a little number are MASTERS in this field. GREAT!
Looks like you won the blue ribbon. Congratulations! Certainly well deserved. Outstanding!!!
I was really impressed when I first started watching, then I saw the trailing hanger bay interior floor lighting and that just blew my socks off. Well done.
thats a beautiful ship. one of the best!!!
That's... I mean it's... Words fail me, it's simply that incredible.
Congrats my friend.... its been a long journey that I've been happy/excited to see you traverse. Its absolutely brilliant! I'm in awe of how much you've put into it, and almost tempted to start my own journey. But alas what ones heart desires, his mind may not comprehend.
I'd be VERY happy to see you continue your hobby- Please keep us updated whenever your ready for the next challenge!
Wow. Really, really stupendous work. From a modeller and miniature painter with 20+ years experience, I take my hat off to you.
This is still, to me, the BEST looking edition of the famous starship. You did a masterful job building her. Well done, sir!
The video really does capture the detail. The ship takes on a more metallic look which is great. Truly amazing...nice mix of music.
WOW!!! I hesitate to admit that watching your video with THAT music made me choke up a little. Beautiful work!
WOW! This is my favorite design of ENTERPRISE... regardless of it's many flaws, it's still my favorite! It's a beautiful model and I am ever so envious of your skill and patience in it's construction. You are a true model master! I was particularly impressed that you make the hanger deck extend so far into the secondary hull like it was shown in ST:TMP. I don't believe I have ever seen that before in anyone else's work. Bravo! Great job!!!
This was one of the best builds i have ever seen !!!
Truly stunning work. Even without a decent camera tracking rig, you still did an outstanding job of showing this model off. Well done.
You sir, ARE THE MASTER BUILDER!!
WOWO!!!!!!
I got into model building about a year ago with lots of Gundam kits, and now I'm working on a couple more traditional airplanes and tanks. Your work on this Enterprise is truly inspiring. Construction, painting, lighting... I hope that with practice I can make a display half as remarkable as what you've done here!
The finished one looks stunning.
You did a beautiful job on her! The final result is the most beautiful reproduction I have ever seen. Watching your video, I could see myself in a shuttle pod doing the pre board inspection that Scotty gave to Admiral Kirk in TMP. Beautiful work, thank you for sharing!
This is incredible! Words cannot and will not describe how I felt when you finished the Enterprise! In an early video you stated that you didn't know that much about Star Trek...I beg to differ! You know more than a lot of modelers here on youtube! Your version is so exact to the true thing that I believe it's movie grade! This is absolutely amazing! From an old school Trekkie to a starship modeler I salute you!!!!
That is completely awesome!
Truly a thing of beauty. Excellent work
Just too awesome!! Great job on the build. I cannot wait to get my LED kit and build this amazing ship!
A helluva lotta work that really paid off!
😮 Sooooo SWEET!!!! I'm ready 2 take her out & boldly go 😊 ❤ it.
That model is so good, it could easily be used for close-ups in a future film/TV project. Well done. :)
First Class work. The studios should be calling you!
Bravo! Truly beautiful.
A true masterpiece! Exquisite!
Excellent build. One of the nicest I've seen.
Michael,, this is the 4th time I have watched your build log and like you I had a layoff from modeling of about 10 years. I am building a few fighter jets just to test some of the new products on the market that make the hobby a bit easier, as well as get my confidence where I think it needs to be, plus I am using an airbrush now for the first time and wanted to get a little practice with it before I start what hopefully will be the crown jewel of my modeling life. At 57, with some serious health issue I was forced to retire, and I thank God that I have this hobby that I have loved since my Dad introduced me to it when I was a kid. Thank you again for sharing so many tips on the build process. This final film was beautiful, and the edit which was cut to flow with the soundtrack score was the icing on the cake. I'm not surprised you won best of show, also loved your story about them awarding you best paint job. I must tell you, after seeing how beautiful yours came out with the Aztek decals, although I have some VERY good pearlescent paint, I'm thinking about going with the decals as many of the paint jobs I have seen were too overpowering whereas the decals look subtle the way the ship looked in the film. Also thinking about painting the decals with the pearl colors, very lightly as I saw one guy do with outstanding results. Your thought's?
Your build continues to be the best I have seen on TH-cam (with the possible exception of the actual ship footage from the film) It truly is a masterpiece. May God bless you and your family.
One pilot to another, may the wind be at your back with 20 miles clear vis!
Wakeman
+Wakeman Edwards Thanks for the kind words! Sorry but I don't get comment notifications due to spammers. As far as the decals go, I don't know about painting the aztec decals, they are very thin and brittle and mask will most likely pull them up, besides if you are going through the trouble of masking aztecs there is no need for decals in the first place. Let m say, nothing quite pops like a correctly done aztec scheme in pearl paints...but it does require a bit of skill. I would suggest doing a small model (any model...could be a car) in aztecs to get the learning curve down. The decals do have different tints to them, just not quite as bold as the pearls are. If I ever do another refit(and that's a big if) I will try to paint the pearls on it. However the decals will make a very very convincing model.
Holy shit. I watched all your videos of you putting this baby together. She is a beauty. Best looking Enterprise in the entire series.
Excellent craftsmanship-both the model and the video.
Wow, epic job... The detail you put into this is impressive!
That is very impressive.
***KLONNNG***
(sound of jaw hitting the deck in sheer awe)
What you have done has overwhelmed me so much. I am also building mine and added a torpedo sound and lights. It's really awesome. I'm hoping to finish mine by the end of January 2014. Thank you for your inspirations.
Now that is something to be proud of. Nice work. I am getting read to build one. I can only hope that mine will look half as good. Well done! Amazing!
I never get tired of this video. I'm currently working on my own build of this kit. I'm currently having a good time detailing the shuttle bay. I hope mine winds up looking like yours!
Congratulations!! it is a work in state of art! just amazing!! beautiful! well done!!
This is an amazingly beautiful model you've made!! BRAVO!!!!!
Still my favorite video staging of a completed Enterprise model.
Nicely done.
This model would be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars well done!!!!
Thank you for showing us how this should really be done. I've watched your entire series in one evening. Very inspiring!
Oh my. That is really really really impressive.
Puts my little 1/48th messerschmitt to absolute shame.
Fantastic job, really enjoyed watching all the videos.
Awesome ship. Great work.
Absolutely beautiful. What care and skill you gave building such an iconic Ship. Enterprise Refit I think is the most beautiful looking ship of all the re-incarnations. and of all space ships ever designed! and you've done such a lovely job. 'well Done' and thanks for sharing
Absolutely stunning work! I really enjoyed the build videos leading up to this as well.
Mike, I've been a died in the wool Trekkie since it was first on in 1966. I've been doing models since maybe 2 years after that...IE about 47 years. Honestly, I've always liked the idea of doing this kit but I got mostly into gaming minis and such. I think I'm just a bit scared cause I've never done a lighting kit. All in all, this is the BEST finish of this kit I've ever seen. I like yours as much as any I've seen on the screen, and that's no lie. Hollywood's got nothin on you brother! Most of all, I'm inspired to get the money together, practice on a couple of easier kits and then do this one. Now I'm more scared of not trying. thank you very much for sharing this with us all Mike. I sincerely hope you stay with the hobby now. You're too good to lose.
what a masterpiece!
Thank you for get back to me. What you did with the Model is a Absolutely amazing. Thank you for the information. Thank for inspiring me to try my self. can't wait to get started on mine
Aaron Vandoorn You will do fine. It's a intense build but very rewarding
Amazing work! I made a similar model a long time ago (about 1992) with lights and sound effects, not costume made though, it was all part of a kit. Certainly not as good as this, but was great fun to do.
Recently I was thinking about building another Star Trek Ship, maybe the Enterprise E as no point re-doing another A.
This has certainly given me inspiration! Just WOW!
Holy Cow that’s the nicest one I’ve ever seen.
Fantastic build my friend!!!!!!!!!!!
Great build. You did exactly what I want to do with mine. A few years ago I managed to run across a PL 350th scale 1701/1701-A for $30, craped my pants, snatched it up, and ran before the shop realized the real value of this kit. XD
Absolutely stunning!!
I have to say that I AM a Trekkie and always have been since I was 2 years old and first watched Captain Kirk & Mr. Spock.....Enterprise (Refit) has always been my absolute favorite incarnation of the U.S.S. Enterprise as she's a Federation "Heavy Cruiser" class starship and the refit version of her made her look the part, a heavy cruiser yet you can get the feel that she's there to explore more than to fight, but IF you want to fight then she's got the muscle to kick your ass into next week. You did a FANTASTIC job on this kit. I've been wanting to buy this kit for a couple of years now and you've inspired me to do just that
Wow, just amazing work sir! Love the cat keeping watch as well.
You sir, are the man.
This is the REAL ENTERPRISE!!!! The best...
Outstanding video! Cheers to you
Class one job i had gouse bumps watchingf the scaleof detail on this model as a modeler myself
I am without speech. This is absolutely beautiful. The ship, the music, the camera work all combine into an awesome video. Hats' off to ya
LOL....the cat's like "MROW, man do I gotta realign those nacels AGAIN?!"
Gods, I just came! Effn fantastic, dude!
Beautiful work!
Phenominal job, my friend!
What an absolutely stunning build!
Such a beautiful job great work you must be very proud I know I would 😎
Just outstanding work here and the video really wraps things together with the music as a big cherry on the top. I may have to dig my kit out of the attic and send it to you guy's...I could only ever aspire to this kind of build...seriously, your build and video has left me tingling!
That is a thing of beauty! Of all the Enterprises we've had this is still my favorite, was in awe of it when I saw it on the screen and still love the design. Never imagined the rec room as a park!! I have the same polar lights model, still in the box, just sitting in the garage collecting dust along with others, now I'm totally inspired get her out and build her. It's such a shame with the amazing amount of detail and lights we can do with models now days that they use CGI ships Awesome work!!
i love`t the detail the painta the entire project very but very well done my congrats...
keep on doing these star trek models
I miss hearing that music on TV or in the movies... I really wish there were a new series coming out...
I have the kit, in the box.....waiting to start. Glad to see the journeys of others who have trod before me, is great assistance to avoid the pitfalls....
The Enterprise refit model is my favourite model too since I first saw a picture of it in a magazine in 1979 even before the movie had been released.
YOU ARE AMAZING! At last! Someone who got it right!!!!!!!!! BADASS!
Man, just WOW!!! Your model blew my mind. Absolutely awesome, it easily fits into a movie, especially at 3:10 minute. That urges me to pushing myself to buy a model and build it as much as possible like yours. I haven't see yet the building process video, therefore I want to wait to pop some questions about thecnics or crafting and painting tools that you could use. Either way, A+ for you, thanks for sharing.
She's gorgeous!
amazing!
Wow. Nice work!
Simply... Wow!!
Well done good sir... BRAVO!!
