Great video! Been on both over the years, all depends on where you’re travelling to plus if you have a car or motorbike as Hull was always the cheaper option. The Shields booze cruise is a different story, so handy - been a good reminder! Cheers
Thanks for the video Eddy. Interesting comparison. We went to Den Haag which was interesting. Some excellent museums and stunning art works there. The train service from there is very good and cheap too. However, a word of warning. We were almost caught by a change of platform announcement, only in Nederlands. We would have missed our train and car hire, because the car hire reservation is only held for a limited time. I don't know how you could find out about the change of platforms without finding an English speaker in the crowd.
Nice well balanced review Eddie. I have done the 'Ull-Rotterdam ferry return three times with a car and enjoyed every trip. One thing I would add is that the traffic in Holland can be really terrible and it can take 90 minutes to do the 37 KM from Rotterdam to Europoort (where the boat actually sails from).
Have used both routes many times over the last 25 years - both as a foot passenger and a car driver. I stopped using P&O after they sacked their English crew and will NEVER return to the line! As a car driver, both routes are quite good but the Rotterdam - Hull route is probably better (good secret here is that there is an excellent pub right next to the car park in Rotterdam and Jan, the owner, makes waiting time fly by). The Newcastle - Ijmuiden (pronounced Aye-mau-den - tip, 'uit' is Dutch for 'out' and pronounced the same) is the better for foot passengers and I have found that a taxi or bus from the terminal to Driehuis (pronounced dree-house) station (20 minute ride) will get you to Amsterdam Centraal by train quicker than the bus and more reliable.
Couldn't agree more with your observation about filipinos .I've been to the country a few times and they really are some of the nicest people you can meet.
Yes eddy nice to see you back. Congratulations on hitting 60k subscribers, well deserved m8. 👏🏻....it's Monty Magpie I comment a lot on my football channel
ive spent over £25k on the DFDS over the years, and used P&O many times. So would like to think ive experienced enough to comment. DFDS back in the day, traveling out on a Friday night, was the "party boat", great times on board. Such a fun way to travel. On the down side, If on the lower decks it can be very noisy, not just from the engines, but from car alarms going off, even when people are told to not set them. vomit down the sides of the beds left over from poor cleaning, people shouting, messing around in the corridors, shouting, swearing into the early hours. Granted they are just having a good time, i understand that, but a lot of people onboard need to travel on and sometimes with young childern, so its a little out of order. P&O, so much quieter, didnt even know you are on a ship. Less of a atmosphere than DFDS. But so much cleaner and not having to fold bits of paper up to stuff into rattling wall and roof panels to stop vibration noise (like on DFDS), and no drunk people running up and down shouting the whole night. Also i found it cheaper to travel with a car via P&O, then i did as a foot passenger on DFDS. This may have been due to the days i traveled. Really enjoyed my trips with DFDS, and they have been brilliant over the years to accomodate me and my unusal travel cirumtansces at the time, i highly recommend traveling to the Netherlands (or further) via DFDS, food is great, staff are outstanding, worth paying extra for an upper deck, towards the front of the boat if you want half a chance of sleeping. P&O, its a shorter trip in time, but seems longer as it doesnt set sail until later, clean quiet nothing to complain about.. just a tip for people driving on at the other side, dont drink too much as you can be stopped to give a breathe test at the other side.
Top video as ever Eddie. Really insightful. We plan a trip to Amsterdam in Spring from Newcastle- will let you know how it goes but im sure it will be fab
Now then. Me and the wife doing the pride of Hull ferry to Amsterdam via rotterdam in March, should be a buzz. We got upgraded room and kitchen diner outbound and brasserie inbound and breakfast rotterdam side. Thanks for the vlog, we'll have to make the most of the 5 hours in Amsterdam!!!!!!.
I’ve done the Hull to Rotterdam many many times we used to live in Hull. First time was in 1980. Last one was out on Pride of Rotterdam return Pride of Hull. Have to say the staff etc of the Rotterdam were much better than the Hull. Our beds mattress was knackered duvet full of holes. Love the buffet.
Excellent video Eddie, very informative. I've travelled on the North Shields to Amsterdam Ferry and I wasn't impressed. Doubt i'd do it again. I'd prefer to fly next time and I'd stay a few days. The 5/6 hours just isn't enough time.
Good option into Europe when watching Newcastle, connections aren't as good as Amsterdam but quieter and cheaper . Feyenoord in champions league was most memorable out of many, but best game and best journey back partying with Belgium paratroopers. Hopefully back on board next season for more memories. Great video again thanks.
i live in northumberland, and have used both crossings, i prefer the Hull on the basis travelling by car the crossing is shorter , ie docking earlier allows more day time driving destination wise.also hull crossing seemed more lively at night.
Ive used both also, for freight. Was always sea sick on Shields to Ijmuiden but was fine on Hull Rotterdam. Great entertainment on the Pride of Hull/Rotterdam.
We took the campervan with our dog from Hull and back from Rotterdam. The dog friendly cabin has access to a small deck space but otherwise the dog can’t move around the ship.
Transport envy! I know what you mean. Thanks for including that. Rotterdam is an interesting one as it was flattened in WW2 and was largely rebuilt around the car - as many other cities around the world did. It's been retrofitted to be a cycling paradise, so there's no excuse for UK towns and cities. I'm sure Newcastle will have a cycle campaign. Drop them a line and help out! They'll need all the help they can get. Great video. Thanks for sharing
I think you’re absolutely right. DFDS just appear more polished than P&O in my opinion. Given a choice I would choose DFDS even though it is a longer crossing, but there is nothing wrong with taking P&O if you live nearer to Hull.
Excellent video- agree with much of what you said. Rotterdam is a fantastic place and both crossings are very enjoyable. Only point I would make is that you've completely overcharged yourself! P&O always offer it as a mini cruise package, rather than booking a return as a foot passenger- it's just a bit hidden. I punched it in for a date in early Feb and for an inside cabin, Dutch transfers and meal package (saves a little bit compared to buying dinner and breakfast separately) it comes to £160.90 for one person. Just doesn't seem to allow you to book the York transfer, although nothing a phone call couldn't solve I'm sure.
You’ll need to elaborate on this Oli as I went through the website booking system with fine tooth Combe and I don’t recognise the missed opportunity 🤷🏻♂️
Enjoyed this, Did this trip twice last year paid between £90-£100 for same cabin but with no food add ons. You didn't mention the cafe where you can get pizza chips etc for spot on prices,Well done good vid.
I've been on the Newcastle to Amsterdam trip a couple of times and I must agree with you about the staff. They were really friendly, professional and welcoming. Is there still the "Mind your Head" signs above the doors that are about 7' 10" high? I know the Dutch are tall, but howay man! :)
Eddie, looks like a lot of connections and transfers for the Hull excursion in which you compared to DFDS, even though shorter time in Amsterdam wouldn't like to take on all the transfers probably miss them!! DFDS on a winning way! expect you will be taking to the Air next on flights 🙂 to Holland its quicker
I mention the convenience of geography in the summary, yeah. Flying is definitely quicker, sometimes cheaper and I flew to Amsterdam for a few days in December. However, travelling isn’t always about the destination, it’s about the journey too 👍🏻
I did both about 20 years ago. Rotterdam bit boring but had shows on the ferry singing was very rough seas that night too. Amsterdam cool. way more chilled

Good video, liked the bus boat idea. Makes a change for someone not to slag of P&O, becausf their staffing fiasco, have done both routes recently and no real preference, both a long drive from the south east.
Cheers bud. There’s no average that I can think of and I stress in the video that every persons requirements will be different. You’re best off just going on the website and having a look at the dates you want 👍🏻
Did Hull to Rotherham back in late 90's never bothered with a cabin just slept in the seating after a few drinks one time i was last passenger to leave the ferry only just caught the coach to Amsterdam
Didn't P&O sack all there old local staff overnight and replace them with cheap labour staff. Done the trip many a time and always enjoyed it. We never really liked Rotterdam or Amsterdam. We much preferred Bruges when the Ferry ran to Zeebruga. You summed it up well.
Even their tourist buses are better. Been on a bus/boat like that in London. They were so old and knackered we has to change to identical bus off the bus which drove on roads into a different bus which went in water. It wasn't quite the same as just seemlessly driving from road to water.
The Hull Ferry is massively cheaper than the Newcastle Ferry, I have done both many times as I live in the Netherlands and my home town is Newcastle,. DFDS are taking the royal p**s on pricing now, they do not advertise prices very far in advance especially around xmas and new year. this easter it is 1600 Euros for a return, they are charging 600 Euros for a 2 bed inside cabin :-0 Hull ferry does not have the upgrades that the King does from DFDS, but it is a very good ferry service and I find the staff great with a massively reduced "booze cruise" parties...
