I once saved an avocado tree from what I think was root rot. The leaves started dying from the tip first. The branches too had this blight that would creep toward the trunk. I ended up repotting it into a bigger pot. I washed out as much of the old soil as possible and used a tree planting mix in the new pot. I pruned the blighted branches and used pruning seal on them. Finally I applied Agri-fos with a syringe at the base of the trunk. I did this maybe two or three times a week for a few weeks. The tree recovered!
I’m not a gardener and didn’t really know what I was doing. Just grabbed bits and pieces from the internet trying to find a solution. Anything to save that tree. I can still remember how ecstatic I was when I saw that first bit of green leaves starting to grow after my intervention. That was six years ago and the tree is still doing good.

All right dude I have a huge pot it's got to be at least 50 liters with a avocado tree growing in it that is over 2 m high but now it's totally wilting. Every time I eat an avocado I throw the pits in some soil and eventually they grow. no toothpicks nothing weird. all my other trees are flourishing on a big patio I have. So this one I'm now going to take your advice and see if I can aerate the soil and get rid of your suggestion of what it might be. Thanks for the info.n the planter was in the place where I moved in I would never buy one the shape it's really pretty but it's an oval shape so the center is really wide I'm going to have to get a hose in there and gently pull out the tree with the roots get the dirt off like you say sorry I'm thinking out loud thanks again for your help. big hugs Mike and Argentina

THANK YOU for your channel, I have been growing an avocado from seed for a bit over a year and it's looking very sick. I got a moisture metre which I didn't know even was a thing.. and realised I've been watering it waaayy too much. Yesterday I bought some new soil for it, because I'm a beginner and felt the best thing would be give it some good quality soil. I noticed the roots looked a bit nasty, the old soil felt like it had clay in it and it must have root rot. But it still has some ok leaves up the top. I will take your advice and hoping I can save it since it is not quite as bad as the one here

Maybe try a smaller pot? This will allow the soil to dry out quicker and prevent root rot. Downside is you’ll have to water and repot more frequently as the tree grows... good luck!

Yeah, I saw that on this other guys channel. A lot of people including myself pot in huge pots to save time and effort. I’m never doing that again. You only pot up once the roots are big enough and have outgrown the pot and even then you go up one size that’s it.

For some reason, all of my citrus trees hate terracotta pots, and I live in Oregon, which I'd imagine is cooler than where you're at. My semi dwarf meyer lemon, which looked completley dead, started to come back. It is in a plastic nursery pot with E.B. Stone: Cactus and Succulent mix. The E.B. Stone: Citrus and Palm mix is taking a little longer to dry before I could water again, probably because it had more lava rock than the cactus and succulent mix

Thank you for this video. My avocado plant, that I grew from a seed, was doing fantastic for 6 months. Over the last few weeks, it's been droopy, all the leaves have started to brown on then ends to ultimately die and fall off, but new leaves are growing. I suspect root rot, so I just did exactly what was in this video and transfer to a new pot, with better draining soil and I hope it works. The roots seemed pretty well in tact, only had to cut off a couple so I hope I can revive it.

Your pot needs better drainage...either drill more holes in the terracotta pot, or use a plastic pot with more drainage. Potting mix is also not ideal in the long term because it would decompose; I would recommend 50% sand + 25% perlite + 25% peat moss +/- vermiculite...the ratios would depend on how frequently you would like to water; using 100% washed sand will always be better than potting mix because silicon dioxide would not decompose.

Such a well done video! Loved how simple it was explained and how you used animations to make it even more clear! The only thing I would do differently - I would use a smaller pot, cause the bottom layer of the soil will keep the moisture in, since there will be no roots to "drink" that water. Hi Scott !! So we bought two 4ft avocado trees fall of 2019. We went to the nursery and got the pots/ soil they suggested and went home and potted them ! They looked great until this unusual rainy winter we had... We tried covering them to prevent the rain and everything but it didnt help. Their root rot was soooo bad... Its so crazy though its ssooo hard to find any information online on how to treat root rot for avocados, everything is for prevention. We ended up winging it and repotted them into new large plastic pots and gave them a good sand/cactus soil/ gypsum/ 420 mix. Three weeks later they LOOKED better, greener and leaves wernt falling off anymore so we thought they were good. A month later they started to look sad again..I went on a last ditch effort to scramble through google looking for ANYTHING that could possibly point us in the right direction. On like the 6th page of a search I found this little article talking about cutting all the roots off and pouring hydrogen peroxide water over the cleaned roots, repotting them again, and pouring more peroxide over the soil to further kill any rot that was missed. I then searched for what felt like hours for a video of someone doing this to their avocados and couldnt find anything! Couldnt even find anyone doing it to trees in general, only little house plants. Gave up searching and decided to just do it anyways, if they die they die, if not then amazing !! It was the saddest and cruelest thing ive ever done to a plant haha Its been about a week since we have done it and they havent dropped the rest of their leaves yet !! All of a sudden, after all that work, I just stumbled on your video -__- I SSOO wish I found this earlier, would have saved so much research time BUT happy to see we pretty much did it the same! Read your comment below about it starting to grow back. Sorry to hear about your cat lol but thank you for the giving us hope that this might actually work !!! Fingers crossed !

    Hi Scott.
I’ve been having my own problem with my avocado plant’s root. There was root rot, so, I treated it by simply scraping the ‘brown’ fungal growth off the root. Systematically, the root stopped sprouting new roots and hardened, becoming the plant’s only root and way to absorb water.
Keep in mind that it has only been growing in a glass mayonnaise jar for the last 10 or so months, using the toothpick method, submerging 70% the pip in water.
I decided to rather transplant it to a pot, using potting soil and small pot. Drainage is great, the water almost drains immediately.
But I think it’s still infected despite the cleaning.
The potting soil also started showing a white substance, which I think may be some mold, and is spreading.
I’m not seeing improvement, only leaves dying and looking rather lifeless.
    Any advice?
    Thanks!

    • @mitchellratcliffe1697
      @mitchellratcliffe1697 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

How often did you change the water while it was growing in the jar? The roots absorb the oxygen in the water to survive so may have run out causing the roots to die
Another thing to consider but probably wasn't your issue is soils that are made up of mostly composted material will continue to compost every time you water your tree, so every time it gets water your soil will decompose and along with it the roots, it also consumes the oxygen in the soil that the roots need
If your tree doesn't look like it'll survive replanting it into correct soil than you can let the soil dry between Watering which slows the soil from decomposing, after it recovers replant into sandy loam soil and add Peat moss, volcanic rock, charcoal and perlite then heavily mulch to insulate the shallow roots, do not wash the old dirt out as you will potentially wash away an important root fungus, instead use a skewer to pick old soil out or just leave it be and give it lots of water

Hi there! :-) I was wondering if you might have any advise for a young...ish (about 4ft tall and skinny) Haas tree that I've already planted in the ground. I think I've been over-watering if, but I also wonder if a gopher may have gotten to it's roots and/or if it's getting too much warm --> hot sun???
I live on the central coast of California and we are just now starting to get our "summer heat" in July. Temps may reach up to 90+ (F), but usually hover around the high 70s and 80s. We also often receive fog in the evening, which last throughout the night and into mid-morning or so.
Basically it's leaves are all slightly brownish-green and droopy-looking. The top has almost lost ALL of it's leaves already. 😢 It's only been in the ground about 3 months or so. How often do you think I should water it? How often should I add fertilizer/food to it?
    Any advise is MUCH appreciated!

I watered it because the soil was dry 3 inches kn top and only mildly damp under that but im at the point where i have no idea whats going on with my plant im still thinking its root rot to a point but mow i believe that it isnt humid enough outside or maybe i need to water it a bit more often and give it much more direct sun for more hours.

That's when the stem started to turn brown at the top. Took it out again from the rose soil and notice that most of the roots were falling off. (It was recovering well, then my cat decided to use it as a sneaky toilet , by the time I eventually realised, the root rot had set back in).

Would you recommend putting the roots in water and letting them grow out again? Or would that just cause more bacteria to form?

Hello, Scott, my name is Sylvia. I am new to growing my own avocado tree. I seem to have a rather healthy tree. Just recently I realized I was over watering it. Now it's quite tall and the newer 3 leaves are white. Is there something else wrong with my tree?

Just ordered a 5 ft hass avacado tree that had 20 leaveson it. Leaves are falling off the past week but they look healthy. Is there something wrong with the tree? I live on sand so I took it out, I dug out the existing sand and replaced it with 75% peat % and 25% vegetable miracle grow mixed. I will also mention that maybe I might have accidentally sprayed the leaves kinda hard by accident..sorry... with a water hose and maybe I'm overwatering it too??

Scott, you don't seem to have a shortage of avocado seeds so at this stage just plant another. Your Hass seed will not be a "Hass" as it has two parents. You've done excellent research on root rot I think you would enjoy watching Greg Adler's youtube videos. My error, I just viewed your previous video and see it is a grafted avocado, so enjoy your Hass.

What about putting the avocado back into water? My cado lost all its leaves because of too much water, so I was thinking maybe it's a good idea to put it in a water vase instead of a dirt vase (as when it was a sprouting seed). Can this help?

I have 2 avocado trees I've grown from the pit . They were growing great , then one by one the leaves turned brown around the edges , I pinched them off till only a stem left . Same happened to the other as well . I left them was going to throw them out but leaves started growing again , all at the top of the stem . And then the leaves started to turn brown at the edges again .
Is this root rot ? Right now I can't really repot them with fresh soil , it's cold out and I did my planting out on the deck . Will they just keep losing leaves and growing them back ? Not sure what to do with them , I want them to grow , they're a pretty green plant 😔
I try to check the moisture , water them once every week and a half maybe , I've brought them inside in hopes to keep them going til spring .

Scott - You need to check out "Gary's Best Gardening" channel. 'Gary's Tips For Growing Avocado Trees'. He's the owner of Laguna Hills Nursery. He says potting soil and compost kills avocados if you plant in them. He has video seminars on soil, planting and trees etc. I've tried his methods and saw results in less than 2 weeks. He advocates not planting in "ground up dead trees" - compost and potting soil. Decaying compost and ground up trees rot if they are wet. Don't plant in them. He also says growing a tree from a seed will take 7-13 years to make fruit. So he recommends grafted stock. You get fruit within 3 years of grafting. Good luck with your avocados.

If the roots are still in the ground and there's still some stem - there's a chance it'll recover. Keep an eye on how moist the soil is and only water when it's dry. Stressed trees are more prone to root rot and other problems. Hopefully it recovers!

Replace soil with cactus soil and water every ten days… make sure they get lots of sunlight or keep by a window for first three years - use fungicides on leaves and water a couple times if you have root rot… or when you transplant … try to cut off roots that are spoiled and replant in new pot… not the same pot

Ah. Yes. This is an interesting question. I was hoping to make one a little while ago - it was looking fantastic. It had grown a couple of dozen new leaves. It's stem was growing, it had a new branch..... then tragedy. It wasn't drying out, and I was very confused because I only water it when it was dry, which was usually a weekly thing... Then I discovered that our beautiful cat, Luna, decided that whilst she has the option of two pristine kitty litter trays in the house, she would instead use the avocado tree's pot to do her business. It dropped its leaves again and was not looking good. I repeated the process in this video again and put it in a smaller pot. But it's not looking good.
I've added another strategy in my attack on root rot in that I am now watering plants with root rot with a water and hydrogen peroxide solution, but I fear that these tree, after being used as a toilet for who knows how long (maybe two months) has lost too many roots and isn't going to make it.
I'm really sad because after I made this video it was doing exceptionally well, until it became a cat toilet... if it recovers, a video will be coming. FIngers and toes crossed!

@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree I wish it all the best, I have a tree clinging onto life as well so your method seemed promising, mine is almost 3 years old and I however put mine into the ground instead of another pot, it lost most of it leaves and is budding back but the new leaves are curling ever so slightly and tips slowly turning brown almost immediately after budding out. Our neighbours cat occasionally gets into where my avo tree is growing so hopefully his not doing the same as your cat, thanks again for the update though
