I think competition is healthy and deeply rooted in our primal needs. however, it's very enlighting that status was a better predictor of survival during hunter-gatherer times than material abundance was. You have a ton of animal skins who cares, your just a hoarder.

Here's a critique of status games: If I increase my attractiveness (or leadership skill) I'm gaining status by climbing the hierarchy. Now, someone has to get down so I can take their place. Is this a zero-sum game? I think is not because I'm giving other people emotions that my predecesor coudn't. Feelings of like and security. And if 100 people surpass my status by being more handsome, better persuader, healthier, more confident and outgoing than me... Isn't humanity wining because of that? I think status games are not necessarely a zero-sum game beause they benefit other people's emotions.

@Payback Vendetta But what about attraction, what about all the favoritism that comes with being pretty and popular and respected (from colleges to partners to random people) everyone of them is programed by evolution to respect and want to associate with those who have more status. So why renounce those benefits? "Because you're wasting time that could be used generating wealth" Fair enough, my point is that a life with no status it's not good and it should be a balanced between generating wealth and generating status. You choose the proportion.
