I must say, this is one the BEST demos of any effects unit I've ever seen. The reason why? You have the same sounds/loop being played throughout all of the setting and examples. I hate when someone shows and effect and plays one thing, then shows another effect and plays something in a totally different way. I want to be able to A/B those effects and it's tough to do when something is played for A then something different for B. Thanks!!
Thanks for the positive feedback, guys! I've struggled to find comprehensive demos of bass effects pedals so I figured I could grab a few of the ones I own and take a stab at it. Makes me happy to hear that you found them helpful.
Thats a great little review there...short sweet and simple. I have owned a Boss OC2 in the past, and will definitely be adding an OC3 to my board in the near future. Thanks for a great review man!
Thanks buddy, the sounds I was looking for [and new existed] were eluding me. Even with the help of a friend telling me what to do I still couldn't get it to do what I was seeking and this video described it perfectly and more! Thanks again!
Really good question. Reading through the BOSS docs, it sounds like when you plug into the bass input, the pedal automatically adjusts how the effects are being applied to the signal in order to better suit a bass guitar - so it wouldn't be able to handle both instruments at the same time.
Great! Thanks for a terrific demo on this Boss pedal. This should be on the Boss website. I need it on a Bass for that low fill and this video tells me all I need to do this. Thanks.
Ha! thanks. If they ever want to mail me pedals, I'd be happy to post more demo vids. I was just trying to put stuff out there cause as a bassist, it's hard to find solid demos of pedals. There are a crap load of guitar pedal demos but bass is hard to come by. Thanks for the comment!
Yeah great demo and a great way to demonstrate the possibilities of the OC3. I bought a behringer super octave (my first behringer pedal) but its not for and now shopping for the OC3.
Thanks for the feedback and subscribing. I used an M-AUDIO Fast Track Pro to run the loop through the pedal. I used the TRS out on the back of the Fast Track connected to the pedal input and then sent the pedal out to the Inst input on the front. I think the proper way to do any signal processing like this would be to use a re-amp but I was cheap and able to get the levels set well enough that it sounds okay for a quick video. For software I used Garage Band but any DAW software should work.
Good question - No, this pedal focuses on delivering tones 1 to 2 octaves below the input pitch. If you'd like to play up an octave, you'll have to play up 12 frets. ;-)
I'm slowly starting to find my own personal sound now, rather than mimicking Chancellor's. I do however use some of the same playing styles as him. I'm a fairly new bassist, so there is still so much to learn. Thanks for the reply.
Thank you for answer, but I think I explained poorly. I found a pedal that splits the signal just fine, so the splitting between two amplifiers will not be a problem. :) My question is: Can it shut off one of the octaves, like the main octave and still have the octave below?
Yeah sorry I prob didn't do the best job explaining that bit. From the OC3 manual: "This functions as a RANGE knob when the MODE knob is set to POLY. This adjusts the range in which the octave effect is applied. The effect extends into higher frequencies as the knob is turned to the right; turning the knob to the left limits the effect to lower frequencies." So ya your understanding is correct that it's like an input EQ selector.
If you're playing live, I'd def suggest getting a tuner pedal because it doubles as a quick mute. Otherwise, you'd probably have the most fun with a distortion/overdrive petal to add some color/dirt/depth to your sound. I'd head over to musiciansfriend - browse bass pedals and sort by popularity. Read reviews and see what sounds like fun to you. Typically pedals don't come with anything so you'll need either a 9v or an adapter (and an extra TS to go to your amp). Anyone else have advice?
@g3zar Hello, I am a fairly new player, and I am looking into purchasing my first pedal. My musical preferences are bands like Tool and System of a Down, and I was wondering what pedal would be good to get those tones? also, does everything I need come with the pedal upon purchasing, or do I need to buy special chords? Thanks!
This pedal will only drop your tone in octaves, so if you're tuned in E, you'll still be playing in E....just an octave lower. You'd need a more advanced synth which could handle half and whole steps in order to do what you're talking about. In the past, I've actually brought a separate bass pre-tuned down a whole step on each string (d,g,c,f) for those situations. I hadn't even considered looking for a pedal that would let me adjust my intonation. Cool idea!
I've used this pedal with distortion effects before and it works nicely. I'd expect it would work well with the ODB-3. Maybe someone else has experience with this exact combination and can comment.
Naw, I haven't been able to try the OC2. It'd be interesting to know how it compares. The OC3 does feel like it tracks my playing well. Tough to demonstrate in the video but it almost never "searches" for the right tone and even though you can feel a bit of a delay as you play, it's really minimal IMO.
@g3zar Hey. Is it possible to use both outputs at once? One to guitar amp and one to bass amp? If so, is it possible to only use the "bass" octave alone on the bass amp?
You'd need a pitch-shifter for that. But beware...if you're playing more than note at the same time, it will sound awful (or cool, depending on your taste). If you only want to D-drop, there are both guitars and basses with a little button or lever that can tune down the E string instantly. You have a separate tuning key for the dropped mode (kinda like those intonation keys on the bridge for guitars with string-lock, like Floyd Rose).
I found an old Behringer Tuner which is included in any Behringer starting kit. I was able to use two amplifiers at once with the two outputs for some reason.
Perfect demo thanks! Nice clean sound which is so important for making decisions - especially on the bass end. I play both bass and guitar and this pedal looks like it will fit the job perfectly - looking forward to making funky synth bass sounds. Also I think the 3rd knob in the POLY mode is more useful for use on guitar so you can choose just to pitch shift the lower notes to simulate having a bass player. If I had 4 arms I wouldn't need this pedal....
I thought the Min/Max dial changed the Q of the frequencies boosted when in Poly mode. You're saying it increases the bandwidth of the frequencies that are copied 1 octave down? Maybe I didn't quite understand what you were saying in the video.
You can shut off the input level signal by turning down the "Direct" knob on the far left. This will leave you with only the effected signal (which can be 1 or 2 octaves below the input signal). See 1:13-1:25. Is this what you mean? Out of curiosity, what pedal did you find for splitting? Sounds really interesting.
The signal (audio loop) is coming straight from my laptop in this vid and then out to my digital recorder so there's nothing else in the chain really. Ideally I would have had someone else playing the riff on a bass and plug that straight into the pedal but the audio loop from my laptop was the closest I could get.
For simplicity in this vid, I'm just running a pre-recorded bass loop through the pedal. The sample came from Garage Band so I have no idea what instrument/amp it was recorded with - sorry man!
Ha! thanks. If they ever want to mail me pedals, I'd be happy to post more demo vids. I was just trying to put stuff out there cause as a bassist, it's hard to find solid demos of pedals. There are a crap load of guitar pedal demos but bass is hard to come by. Thanks for the comment!

Totally agree.

Ikr finally someone who isn't trying to show off on a demo
Nice to see a simple demo where the focus is in what the pedal actually does and not on the so-called "skills" of the guitarist. Nicely done :)
Right on Scott S!!
I wish ALL TH-cam demos were done this way.
Very good demo. Clear and very detailed. The impact of each setting is now clear. Congratulations

A great demo, using a looper really helps us understand the effects as they are changed. Thanks
One of the best demos I've ever seen, cheers man!

This is such a great review. It's exactly what I was hoping to see. Thanks for doing this.
That is a funky groove my man! I love it! Definatley picking this pedal up.
excellent demo. clarified a lot of doubts of mine regarding octave pedals. thank you.
Great! Thanks for a terrific demo on this Boss pedal. This should be on the Boss website. I need it on a Bass for that low fill and this video tells me all I need to do this. Thanks.
great review man, exactly what I was looking for in a review video!
Cheers!

Bass demo was simple yet quite effective!! Good to see someone actually not use a demo as means to "Show off their chops"...
Hey thanks, Levi. I know how you feel about trying to find complete demos for effects pedals. Especially for bass. Glad to hear it helped!
Yeah great demo and a great way to demonstrate the possibilities of the OC3. I bought a behringer super octave (my first behringer pedal) but its not for and now shopping for the OC3.
VERY fine review! thanks! I'm looking for an octaver and your fine review has definately pushed me in the boss direction. They should hire you!
Great demo. Thanks

Great demo, thanks!
Thanks for the great review/demo :D
It's so hard to find detailed demonstrations of each parameter on pedals.
Seriously, those guitars/basses are awesome. I didn't think things like that could exist. =)

Good demo I guess, but it only convinced me that this isn't the pedal I'm looking for. Going to go with an EHX Micro POG.
Thx for the demo! Getting one today
Thanks for the great demo video @g3zar

Thanks for the reply.
Superb review, so simple to follow; I know exactly what the pedal does now and am free to play about on my own: cheers! ;-)
I want to create a sound like an 808 bass. Any suggestions?
Thank you for answer, but I think I explained poorly.

That overdrive is not bad at all!
Very cool man, thank you!!
I really appreciate it.

A little late here to the party, thank you ! :)
Good walk through! Thanks
thanks for the demo

The Boss ODB-3 can get you a good distorted bass tone without the syth-like sound of this Octave pedal. Might want to check into that one too.
I've used this pedal with distortion effects before and it works nicely. I'd expect it would work well with the ODB-3. Maybe someone else has experience with this exact combination and can comment.

The pedal sounds really cool, can this pedal be used along side / in line with the Boss ODB-3 BASS OVERDRIVE PEDAL?
I found an old Behringer Tuner which is included in any Behringer starting kit. I was able to use two amplifiers at once with the two outputs for some reason.
I bought one used and it sounds nice.
very nice demo,.. thumbs up

Thanks for posting. Have you tried an OC2? I got an old Japanese one but some say that OC3 tracks better?..
NIce dry signal make such a difference. Are you direct into the box or with overdrive/pre before it in the chain?
The signal (audio loop) is coming straight from my laptop in this vid and then out to my digital recorder so there's nothing else in the chain really. Ideally I would have had someone else playing the riff on a bass and plug that straight into the pedal but the audio loop from my laptop was the closest I could get.
Can it go an octave higher though?
I know, but the good news is that it really kills.
Just to be clear, you CAN make it create an octave ABOVE what you're playing, right?
No this only 1 or 2 octave below
An EHX pog can go 1 octave below and 1 above
And if you have money the pog2 goes 2 below and 2 above
The VB-99 does that well, but costs about 15 of these pedals.
cant it be played one or two octave higher ?
Nirmalya Sinha Sadly, no.
I bet!
I need this for brass tuba helicon
Hey what kind of amp and bass are you using?
Really liking the amp sound
For simplicity in this vid, I'm just running a pre-recorded bass loop through the pedal. The sample came from Garage Band so I have no idea what instrument/amp it was recorded with - sorry man!
thanks for the feedback!
@@g3zar it's MM or something with a humbucker
are u recording a video in your bath room? :)
Damn!
This reminds me of Pajama Sam music
Does this pedal have an octave up mode?
+dmanster Nope.
so what's better then OC-2 or Oc-3? i'm about to get one
SoseBass 11/2 OC3 has the OC2 built into it, plus a polyphonic mode.
Yea I love it! I got one now the oc-3 that is for my bass guitar
nice. have you tried an OC3 going into an OC3 for two levels of polyphony?
Na is that sick? I got a bass synth wah digitech pedal that has an octave setting do you think I could establish it with that?
write the tabs you played pls
of course, but i wanted an ever higher octave so i could play chords... ;)
Sounds like a VERY noisy pedal. Lots of hiss. I'll stick with the EHX POG
MY EARS ARE ITCHING
2 octaves down on bass no! Otherwise great
lowering by an octave sounds like a synth bass rather than a real bass
Ha! thanks. If they ever want to mail me pedals, I'd be happy to post more demo vids. I was just trying to put stuff out there cause as a bassist, it's hard to find solid demos of pedals. There are a crap load of guitar pedal demos but bass is hard to come by. Thanks for the comment!
