Yeah, ngl I prefer 'dumb' filament. I don't need my system knowing what color or material is going in, I just create slicer profiles for different filaments and manually select the gcode files I print based on the filament I'm using. I can understand the utility for a print farm, but for hobbyists it sounds like a whole lot of added expense for little to no tangible benefit.
@aeonjoey assuming you can still use 3rd party 'dumb' filament, then I'm sure it's great. However, I cannot imagine myself, as a hobbyist, paying more for a 'smart' spool or 'smart' AMS. Or... anything Bambu Labs brand tbh... lol
This company practicing the market strategy of “let’s make it to where nobody will ever want to buy our printer because the upkeep costs are going to be astronomical”
The printer works with non RFID filament. You just don’t get the convenience of putting filament in and it instantly knowing what you put in it. Without tags how will my printer know the plastic I just put into it is green? All I have to do it go onto my computer and select green and it works. Not like they block you out of using third party filament. They actually encourage it
I refuse to buy bamboo labs printers because they can, in just one little, automatic firmware update, make it so you can't use third party filament. I also don't understand why so many people promote them for print farms. Yes they have said they won't, but why make a feature you don't intend to use. I'm betting they are trying to build a huge market share then flip the switch when people are too invested
They wouldn't push out firmware that would do that. The same print farms you mentioned don't use the AMS and therfore don't have the readers. If they were to push out firmware that did this they would brick 3/4 of the printers they have ever sold.
So, the only way to “validate” a signature is to have the hashing key, so if the printer isn’t connected to the internet it means that key is on the printer so I’m sure there’s a way to get it off the device
Validating a signature only requires a public key which is in the machine, but signing requires a different key that is not. The whole point of signing things is to allow others verify that whatever you signed is from you AND hasn't been tampered, w/o the need to give you the signing key.
Unless you are meaning to modify the validation key of the device so it will accept your signed devices, which could work, but at that point you are just loading your own firmware so you can do anything 🤔
it's not your fault but could you add a comment clarifying that they can use whatever spool they want and RFID is just a convenience? people are assuming that bambu printers can only use "bambu spools" and much as I hate their other proprietary tech, people gotta hate them for the right reasons.

@@aeonjoey3d Ah - good! Still sucks that you can't so easily just make your own though, because it still makes using recycled/homemade filament harder :/
A) there’s no need, you can use whatever filament you want, the rfid saves 3 taps on the touch screen - selecting brand, filament type, and color. B) you can rip the tags off and tape them to the side of any filament you want eg polyterra is nearly identical and if you get the same color it works so well that there’s 3D printable rfid tag holders for polymaker spools. C) Bambu makes refills for $16 that include the tags so you don’t need to use their spool or tag - the refill comes with it.
