I think this is one of their best songs. So absolutely gorgeous.❤ Over 40 years old and still a brilliant masterpiece. That driving bass and beautiful guitar.💃
Still great after all these years. The memories this song envokes on all of these New Years Days and beyond. Thank you U2 for such an amazing, hauntingly beautiful tune.
I used to hear and watch this on MTV in 1983 and always found the video intriguing. In 2023, after many New Year's days have come and gone,"nothing changes!" It's still a masterpiece!
Almost the same thing here. I was at a friends house in 82 and had never watched MTV, so he put it on and this was the video that was playing. I was pretty young and had never seen or heard anything like it. I was captivated as well, and for some reason, still remember that moment to this day.

My wonderful, incredible, sweet husband was not a fan of the New Year’s Day holiday. He loved this song because Bono says “Nothing changes on New Year’s Day.” My late husband agreed with that thought. Sadly he lost his life at 54 to cancer. I miss him every single minute of the day. RIP Frankie ♥️♥️♥️
It's not just a song but a masterpiece and a hit. It's so amazing this hit is 41. Who's listening to this masterpiece in 2k24? Masterpiece forever and ever
*The guitar on this album is unreal. It was a high water mark for tone, warmth, and depth, which is rarely met even now, like 4 decades later.* The production is also immaculate. One of those “best albums of all time” sorta things.
Unlike anything else on MTV at the time. A band on horseback in the bitter cold, their instruments slung across their backs like weapons. Rock warriors. This video and Sunday Bloody Sunday from Under a Blood Red Sky ignited my U2 passion.
One of the most important songs of the 80s,U2 really brought something fresh and sexy to the worn out rock style as did The Police. Something radically different.

What is the best song ever written? It depends on what it means to you. Based on when I grew up, and what I was doing in 1983, this will forever be the song that is most dear to me in my life, even if I only listen to it rarely nowadays. It's "my" song because it was my soundtrack at a key point of coming of age; it felt so fresh back then, and the guitar solo was like nothing else I had heard before. (And the longer album version is better than the radio-edit version which is this one.)

Nothing changes on New Years Day. We are in a totally different day and age now. The world is so much more crazy than it was many many years ago. Thanks U2 for giving us this masterpiece.
Isn’t it? Wow. Listening today it’s just so amazing. Never noticed how amazing! I’ve been a huge fan since 1983. They have been a great companion in my life through all the ups & downs.

The song that introduced me to U2, damn, what a decade of music the 80's were. I was 12yrs old in 83' trying to figure things out . I was poor as dirt but so was everyone I knew but I had my MTV, Night tracks on TBS on friday nights, and Kasey Kassem Top 10 on Saturday mornings. The decades passed and I made a good life for myself financially and personally. I crawled out of that small Florida town and have everything a man can want materially now, however, there's still that little poor Florida boy who looks me back in the mirror every morning and smiles, knowing he got me here where I am today. If I had a time machine I would go back and find that poor 12yr boy, shake his hand and tell him, don't change a god damn thing, you will proud of yourself later...and you'll be watching this music again, just not on MTV. Don't worry you'll understand when you get there.
You're my age, same as far as MTV and Florida native here! 80-89 exploded with all genres, sub genre's and new sub genres like Grunge 89-95. Pretty kick ass decade
Man, I am weeping right now after reading this. TN here, but pretty much same story. My brother, we made it so much farther than we or anyone else thought we would. Rock on, GenX. These songs were our teachers, and good ones. we will persevere.
"Nothing changes on New Year's Day." The guitar solo gets me every time. It just screams. I've always considered The Edge to be underrated. "War" was released in 1983. It's now 2023. What's happening? War.
Song is phenomenal! The driving bassline the drums, the piano melody and the incredible solo by the Edge! Then Bono belting it out! Also the song is relaxed! There is a lot of space and melody placement over the driving rhythm! Y’all already know! You just don’t here epic shit like this song these days! Especially a 4 piece! Arcade Fire came close and I love Radiohead! But this song is U2 at their finest!
I agree, I was a teen back in the day, Loved this song & still do...Love U2...bcuz they Rock to this day!!!😁😘, this is just 1 of my U2 faves!!! Perfect!!!
Young men in their early 20s producing masterpieces such as New Year's Day, Gloria, Sunday Bloody Sunday... you have to be born for it, there is no other explanation. 40 years later, it's just as powerful and breathtaking as when it first came out
41 years and this song is still a banger on New Year's Day

You're my age, same as far as MTV and Florida native here! 80-89 exploded with all genres, sub genre's and new sub genres like Grunge 89-95. Pretty kick ass decade
Glad you made it out of hard times , never give up I guess
Man, I am weeping right now after reading this. TN here, but pretty much same story. My brother, we made it so much farther than we or anyone else thought we would. Rock on, GenX. These songs were our teachers, and good ones. we will persevere.
Still listening to this masterpiece on New Year’s Day. 1st January 2024.
Happy New Year to everyone 👍
Every new year I come back to this song
"Nothing changes on New Year's Day."
The guitar solo gets me every time. It just screams. I've always considered The Edge to be underrated. "War" was released in 1983. It's now 2023. What's happening? War.
It has been war for 5000 years.
Yeah his one string solos really put others like batio in shame
It’s almost 2025. What’s (still) happening? (more) war.
Peace and blessings to the whole world, happy 2024 🎉🎉😊
I'm not a big U2 fan, but this song is really up to date, and so is the name of the album: WAR
U2 só tem obras de arte! Essa é uma das minhas preferidas... quando eu tiver meu carro vou ouvir esse som no talo
*Happy 40th anniversary to this timeless classic!*
Ouvindo essa música da vontade só de chorar, ela é uma mistura de tudo, é linda, triste, trágica, agoniante, emocionante e etc, mas é maravilhosa
Oxe, eu tenho às mesmas sensações 😲
Exatamente!
" These times are not changing.
" BROKEN LAND. " THE ADVENTURES.
Who else is here New Year's day 2022? Timeless music!
One of best intros ever
I watched this on a show called Real Videos before I had MTV. I'd tune into the show just to see this video. One of my favorite U2 songs.
I remember that show. On the TBN network along with other religious artists.
I am 50. I listen it day by day, every 31 of december(all day repeat), every 1st of new year day....loud very loud......best song ever...
Happ new year (2024) from The Netherlands!!🎉🎇🎆🌌
Perfect!!!
@@terrinichols888well said sum it up perfectly for those who can't understand why they love music or a certain song
It’s been my tradition for years now to play this song on New Year’s Day. Cheers 🥂 🍻
Since the '80's. I will begin again
Cheers 🥂
Happy new year!
Me too
Me too👍
I feel like it's customary to listen to this song every New Years Day. Very fitting song
Young men in their early 20s producing masterpieces such as New Year's Day, Gloria, Sunday Bloody Sunday... you have to be born for it, there is no other explanation. 40 years later, it's just as powerful and breathtaking as when it first came out
Lol. None of those songs are better than this.
In the name of love comes Close but this song is utter genius
Couldn't explained better!!! Their early years are timeless!! To me impossible no to feel nostalgia of what music has become!! Very disappointed!!
