Chess Stream #136 Lichess: A Roller Coaster of emotions
Loving the more regular uploads Simon. Win or lose, yours is the most entertaining chess channel going
It really is- Ginger gm is the only streamer I still watch after watching dozens of them when discovering the world of chess during lockdown
I wish you'd do another trash talking simulstream vs Finegold
I can’t find dual commentary for the second match :(
@@coltoncampbell964 They didn’t do duel commentary for the 2nd - Simon felt the trash talking format was distracting (as the two obviously get on in reality) and felt it took away his winning chances. So he just streamed to his subs on twitch and played chess.
Thanks for not only showing the games you win. This is what real chess players go through!!!
@42:30 My plan if I was white would be to lock the pawns onto light squares and the king to nulify the black dark squared bishop and keep the rooks limited on a closed game. Maybe salvage the draw.
Hi Simon!
Question: Would it be an idea to make a video/do a stream about the 2. Be2 Sicilian where you analyze games sent in by viewers who play that opening? You could answer sent in questions about it aswell. Cheers!
The more I watch a decent chess game descend into random move until the oponent flags the more I agree with Botvinnik you are not playing chess when it is that fast. It just looks like mayhem. In chess the rule is "We don't talk about project mayhem."
Funny that the account of Hirschman you played some games against is closed by now ^^
Spoiling us with the content, cheers geeze
Thanks, very good comments.
'the first game blues' someone should write a song. how bout that bassist that does your intro? that intro kicks ass.
Could make it a parody of Guns and Roses Shotgun blues.
Why didnt he take the rook at 35:38? It is free right?
I think the queen gets trapped on the back rank by Knight to D3. It cant theaten anything or escape due to the Knight as a jailor which is guarded by the rook and cant be kicked. Queen for Rook and Knight would be a hell of a sacrifice here.
White would have an active rook bishop and king in the end game with one extra pawn. Simon would have a passive King and rook with his best hope being the f pawn and rook on that file.
Here the light squared bishop remains a monstor for white and only an exchange sack is disloging the bishop.
So
25...........QxF1
26 Knd3, QxD3
27 Rxd3, Rexe6
28 dxe6, Rxe6
leaves Simon with 3 pawn islands (due to the unpassed isolated pawn) vs 2 pawn islands. That is the first weakness. The second weakness is the passive king vs the more active king. The third weakness is the passive rook vs White's active rook.
The actual game Simon was worse than this before time trouble so Simon did well to win the game.
Simon had significantly more time on the clock as well so if he saw that deep into the position he may have won the game anyway with this line. As an asside this addresses the issue Simon has with the monster Knight.
@@gm2407 okay, I didn't look that deep hahaha
@@pablohenneman886 In fairness I spent longer than the whole game typing it up. It was more an exercise to see how well I could see and evaluate that position. So practice. If I am wrong I am also prepared to hear counter analysis. haha.
@@gm2407 computer evaluation says black is way up after queen takes the free rook…I think Simon just missed taking the free piece.
@@jasonbarrett3650 I didnt use a computer to evaluate. Trying to improve my thinking through of lines. So thanks for confirming it is not good for white and that Black is very good there.
Sweden, the Copenhagen open.
Yep.
Lichess has a weird glitch or systemic error at 1:13:55. As soon as the pawn dropped off, 2 knights is a technical drawn position.
if the defending player blunders their king into a corner it can be mated. would never happen at this level, and anybody would be able to draw the game, but that's why the game continues.
many positions are "technical" draws but as long as a mate is possible the game continues
Simon have you thought of commissioning a nifty theme tune for your videos?
@44:11 never in any doubt
Didn't you play Iceland just before the pandemic?
Can someone please explain why some players don't loose any time (e.g Hirshman made like 10 moves and his clock stayed at 1.9)? 24:50 is the timestamp. Is it thanks to their internet connection? Or because they premove just at the correct time? Other?
Premoving, most likely. You can see this with the interesting and highly intelligent strategy with the Queen move: not only does he premove but he performs the incorrect premove but the faster one. So he moves the queen by increments, because it is simpler and faster to premove to an adjacent square than to the top rank.
@@kencur9690 Thanks for your answer. I'm using pre-move myself but I feel like, depending on the opponent, pre-move consume more or less time. It rarely leaves my clock intact, even with the most stupid pre-moves. So I'm suspecting network latency. Or that whoever pre-moves first gets a time advantage. Or that I'm stupid and just trying illegal moves :)
@@vergnetp yeah it can be, I’m a slow pre-mover myself, and have experienced the same. I do get fast ones, but rarely does it keep the clock entirely intact. On the other hand, I’ve played almost whole openings without the clock starting (hearing the start chime after the fifth move or so)...
P.s. if you’re both premoving at the end, then it might be the case that you’re not actually premoving (but moving exactly when his turn ends - that’s why he moves incrementally in that queen bit, precisely to avoid premoving late): that’s why my clock always stays intact at the beginning, since the opponent is usually not premoving.
@@kencur9690 ah! that is a very promising explanation. Simon was thinking a tiny bit to place the king on a non covered square, which allow the opponent to pre move adjacent square move (for free on the clock). so in time scramble i will avoid long distance move. thanks again for your input!
It gets discouraging to lose so many in a row: but not as discouraging as when that’s done at my crap level. :-P
Yeah, I dropped from around 2650 to 2420 over the course of a bad few days. Oh, wait, did I say 2650 to 2420? I meant 1650 to 1420.
@@PhilNPrice Yeah… that's getting _closer_ to the range I was thinking about.
Oops, video quality is in 360p 😁
If you watch just after it is uploaded, TH-cam won't have gotten the high quality version online yet.
@@mrtspence That makes sense, thank you! 👍🏻
@@mrtspence It's better now 👍🏻
SIMON!!!
Lol, I think this shows the difference in level between old school players and newer generation. Older ones, like myself, at whatever level, including patzers, like myself, need to pay attention while playing. Meanwhile, young players today can have a chat and listen to loud music while delivering mate after mate. Not that they are better per se, just they are more used to this virtual experience: chess has become more like gaming these days. Instead of cs or cod, it’s chess: still with a c.

Seem to be stuck in a quagmire here. Lost 25 out of my last 30 games. Gone from 1160 to 954 in 2 days. Awesome.
We all love our ratings ? maybe you GMs all love your rating, i dont love my rating !
you should trade it in for a better one that you appreciate more.
@@KF1 i tried, but my opponents had other ideas.
@@mcpartridgeboy Tell me about it. I had a crappy losing streak yesterday, then sat down to grind puzzles instead.
@@KF1 puzzles are better than online chess, i used to be pretty good at chess but blunder a lot so i did 50k puzzles and stopped blundering and turned a weakness into a strenght, now i beat people who are better than me possitionally with tactics and i beat everyone else playing my natural game ! tactics are amazing.
@@mcpartridgeboy May I ask your lichess blitz 5+3 rating sir? Thank you
That first game was awful! ;)
Thay was a shitty first game. Why the hell play gambit style? Better keep it safe and simple. Boring maybe... but in the end a better result.
That last game was it for me! No more of your blitz videos. It's just frustrating watching you struggle to even grab a piece with your mouse.
I have to unsubscribe, I do not want to see these crazy video front pages on my list.
