  • The federal army and QM let contracts for millions of socks and stockings during the civil war years. The ratio of socks to stocking may surprise you, along with many other facts regarding period knitting and finishing techniques. This week's episode dives into the specifics of federal issue socks.
Special thanks to Jessica Craig, the Civil War Museum and the National Archives for their help in conducting the research and obtaining period examples for this video.

Liked the socks with the Stars and Bars on the soles. By the way, in fairness to the young lady who wrote the letter, I think she assumed that a married man's wife would be sending him socks already.

You folks seem to be one of only two hardcore cw reenacting channels on TH-cam. I can't really afford to spend the time and money building a perfect impression, but I still like knowing what I'm doing wrong at least.

Colton, The time and money is definitely a concern, however our mission is to reduce the time needed by providing the research to you. And with recent "Bully Buys" in the hobby, you can get high quality gear for the same price as mainstream gear! Thanks for watching!

I've recently discovered your channel and am enjoying it. This episode is very interesting as im really particular about my socks. The line about "premeditated poverty " really got me as my grandfather was shocked be that sediment when he came to the states as a young man after WW2.

Do you have any recommendations for sutlers that sell issue socks? I bought some nice blue yarn knitted socks from SUM but they don’t look like the white reinforced ones you have

Sorry for being on of those guys. Can you point me to the difference in the civil time of heavy vs light Calvary Reguments? Have looked unable to find from Wikipedia to SW sites. I was thinking of the difference between Dragoon’s vs full Calvary I served as a Sgt in the 2nd Armored Calvary. , the 2nd Cavalry was was originally a dragoon Regiment latter assigned to DC guard and did fight in most of the Manassas area and Gettysburg and a lot more! Indian wars with Custer, then the Mexican wars, to Cuba with the Roosevelt and first Army in Europe Ww1. Now trying to understand more of the 2nd Calvary history. Thank you so very much for you work. It means a lot to me. I have learned much!

The Cavalry were expected to stay on their horses during combat. The dragoons would dismount during battle, but also could fight on horse back if necessary. The light Cavalry be more of a reconnaissance.
Truthfully I can be mistaken, but somebody more informed may be able explain it better.

@@historiclakefreighters7442, where (what side) of PA are you? The 1st Maine in NE is a great authentic unit. The 6th OH based in OH is a great mainstream unit, and there are a few others that I am less aware of. It depends on what type of reenactor you are (why do you want to get into it?) and whether you have a horse already or not. If you give me a bit more information I can definitely find you a host unit. Email me at sdacus@11thovc.com.
