Evacuating the 2020 Oregon Wildfires

  • This video is a cobbled-together account of what happened during the 2020 Oregon Wildfires.
First, my family is safe and I'm forever grateful. My dad and stepmom suffered some fire damage on their land, losing some of their outbuildings and vehicles, but firefighters were able to save their home and the majority of their property.
My mom was able to return the animals to her farm when the rain came this weekend, and they came and got the two goat doelings and the pullets we had been watching for them too.
Everyone is decompressing and slowly getting back to normal. Happy to breathe fresh air, happy for rain. Thanks for watching.

I can't believe how emotional I got watching this vlog. I watch your podcasts all the time but I'm really not one to comment. The thought of you and your husband raising your children on a farm just warms my heart and your girls are beyond beautiful. The help you gave and the help you got is what is world needs more of. Bless you and your family and I pray all is safe

Thanks Laurie. I get emotional every time too, especially the video my dad and stepmom sent when they were evacuating their town. Making this video has helped with processing everything that happened. I’m just so glad everyone came through it safely.

When you think about the choise that you made in leaving town and going to the farm... you had no idea that you would become the place of refuge for the family... So glad that you are all safe and that your families had homes to go back to. Hoping your Fall is less eventful.

Oh yeah, we were so grateful to have pushed so hard on our summer projects so we had a place to keep the animals for awhile. My family has done so much to help us here that it was the least we could do. They all coexisted in our little paddock pretty well, too. 😄 Definiteky hoping for a nice, boring fall. We’ll see, I guess.

What a wild ride that was. I look back on it now, and still doesn’t seem real. PTSD for awhile, I think, but so grateful our homes all survived. Many others weren’t as fortunate. Thank you for taking us in when we had nowhere else to go. We love you guys! ~~MeeMaw.

It’s been about two weeks since this started dying down for us and I still feel like we are all decompressing from it. It’s amazing how much something like this can take out of you.

And then the rains came........... Got chills watching this since we've been there too. Evacuated several times over a few years. Just got to make it through October once again. We're in rural San Diego county, Ca. Loved the new music too. Touching video. Well done.

So emotional. I live in Washington state and I was worried about all the people over there. We had some fires all around us, but nothing like Oregon. So very thankful you were/are safe. I heard that the city of Talent burned down. As far south as Medford had fires. So thankful for your safety.

Yeah, the town next to my dad and stepmom is all but gone, and it happened fast. I’m just so glad they were safe because a lot of people were sleeping and didn’t know what hit them. :(

So struck by this video, with the evacuation footage, too. Seems to show that these hard times knit us all together when we act right, work together and share safely as we’re able 🧶 and good fortune that the rains came✨

Wow, what a September. I am in Southern California, and we were under evacuation orders twice this summer, but neither time had to actually leave our home even though the fires got within a mile or two of our home (thank you firefighters and friendly winds!). I used to have a few sheep but don't now, it would have been a challenge to move them as we don't have a livestock trailer. I guess we would have shoved them into the back of the CRV two at a time if desperate. I also thought of just walking them somewhere else along the road. Guess next time I have sheep I will have to have a better emergency plan for them. Thank goodness for people's willingness to open their farms (including you!) - truly a saving grace in such situations. I am glad you and yours have come out relatively unscathed. Thanks for sharing your story!

Ah, wow. Yeah, it’s such a bummer to have to leave your home. I’m glad you were able to stay and everything worked out this year. We’ve never had fires like this in these areas of Oregon (though we’ve had wildfires here over the past 5-6 years in less populated areas), and unfortunately I don’t think this will be the last of it, so we’re trying to think of ways to prepare in case this ever happens again in the future. So, so grateful to those who took our animals in.

This was so scary to watch...my heart goes out to you all and I’m so glad you and your family and animals are safe. I think it’s the animals that get me in these stories...I’m still haunted by the sight of a horse tied up in a Wal-Mart parking lot while his owner tried to find someone with room in their trailer. It was a happy ending but so many others weren’t. Take care of yourselves ✨

Yeah, definitely, thank you. 🤍 Oregon didn’t used to light up like this, and then suddenly over the past 5-6 years, we’re having wildfires every summer. It’s never come this far in though. This was pretty crazy.

The changes to the homestead look great. I loved when you snapped your fingers and it was all done, HaHaHa. I’m glad your family was safe during those trying times. Family is what is important. The sounds of the goats is adorable. The fire footage is scary and sad. Thank you for sharing this with us. I hope your knitting will bring you some peace and relaxation during these challenging times.

Thank God you’re all safe. I can’t imagine how scary it was to go through it but it’s good to know when you needed help it was there. The world is crazy right now, if it’s not one thing it’s another. At least you finally got lots of rain, other areas didn’t and are still burning. The sad thing is someone set some of those fires, that’s unforgivable. We have woods on all sides of our property and there are a bunch of dead trees that have fallen or broken in half all along the back , the result of a beetle that arrived from China on a ship about ten years ago. They kill the firs from the inside out by burrowing under the bark so you don’t even know for a long time they are there. Worrying, because I can’t do anything about it, it’s my daughters family that own the property and they are city kids, don’t realize the danger. I’ve said , but as usual I’m just an alarmist old worry wart.Take care be safe and well, I’ll keep you in my prayers.🙋🏼

Yikes, yeah... it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to these things. I think the thing that saved my dad and stepmom’s place (aside from the awesome firefighters) was the fact that their horses had been keeping the brush down. It seemed to slow things down enough that firefighters stood a chance of saving the place. And yeah, I really can’t understand the arsonists. It made me so angry to learn there were people out there making this worse on purpose. Ugh.
