Since IBM/RedHat killed down stream CentOS, we've been migrating to Ubuntu. We used CentOS for development, testing, UAT, and staging. And, used RHEL for production since auditing bodies do not consider community forums as "vendor support".

You can use Rocky Linux or Alma Linux both are 1:1 binary compatible with RHEL and they also provide migration scripts as well.

Yeah had the same issue with that, our choice at the time was Solaris or Redhat...easy choice

Its amazing that non-enterprise home users can use RHEL for free, too 🙏💖

I installed AlmaLinux 9 on my primary "daily driver" Dell laptop as soon as it was in beta, because the Wayland packages in Rocky/Alma 8 were not stable on some Radeon cards. I've been using it ever since. I'm pretty impressed, as usual, but then again I've been using CentOS since the early CentOS 3 days. I did discover that there is some incompatibility with the USB chipset on this laptop because now my flatbed scanners don't work (but they DO work on other devices on which I installed AL9 and then Rocky 9 when it just came out). Also the SHA-1 deprecation means that some RPM packages won't install (looking at you and your Radeon-Pro drivers, AMD!)

I have installed Rocky Linux 9, Cent OS 9 Stream as a desktop on metal to test how is the desktop experience, tbh rocky Linux works better on desktop as well if anyone planning to use it. 😅

There's currently three distros that I'm aware of that are 100% clones of RHEL: Rocky, Navy, and vzLinux. I've been running VZ in a vm and am very impressed with the performance. They also have a chameleon script run on the terminal that masks it as RHEL for the purpose of installing and running software, and can be confirmed with neofetch

RHEL9 shipped with a few bugs that can catch you out. BZ#1969362 - New kernels lose previous command-line options - is a particular pain (as we have options specified on most servers). Rocky Linux is 'bug compatible'. We're holding off deploying RHEL9 for a while.... Personally, I have downloaded and installed rocky9 as it is being considered as a replacement to Centos. Doesn't hurt to have a nose around!

I tried i finally got Rocky 9 downloaded this morning, the servers must be going nuts over there right now with everyone trying to get it. And thanks Delta One-One for the heads up

@@CyberGizmo No problem. I guess what I am really saying is if you want to use Rocky or Alma, then read the RedHat release notes to get an idea of the bugs you may hit if you want to use it. 😀
I have also have Alma installed, as well as quite a few other distributions as my job involves having to support them to varying degrees.
