@@acidwizard6528 I'm pretty sure its just a metaphor to say a song is good. He also says it pretty often like a catch phrase, so I suppose its not meant to be taken literally
Why would you say that though, that's just the single.. along with a few other singles I agree were also that endless pop loop, but we still haven't seen his full record yet..
I remember when I heard You Need Me I Don't Need You back in 2012....and was like, this dude is going to be huge. Now his music is bubble gum pop and has lost its magic. I hope he gets back to his roots as he is a mad song writer and singer.
I just saw that Olivia Rodrigo has added Paramore as a writing credit on Good 4 U. You called it. I do not really know how writers tell when they are influenced by artists or are directly stealing. Rodrigo has added other writing credits for two other songs, after the album was released.
I heard Paramore in that song before Rick mentioned it. I doubt it would stand up in court. It’s merely reminiscent of Paramore. Not a very original sounding song either way.
I feel like so many times I hear rick add guitar when he is playing along to a song, that it often adds a new layer of life to the song. What a cool ability to play along with music the way you do Rick, and watching your face change as you listen to music can be so much fun to see. Very cool channel!
First time I’ve seen one of the countdowns and I’m hooked. A musician talking about contemporary music is the perfect way for a middle aged guy to appreciate it.
Man, every time I hear another Bruno Mars tune, I dig him even more. I'm loving this first one--very 70s funk, indeed. It's amazing--the East Village has been really exciting post-lockdown. Musicians have been shedding, and I'm hearing a lot of really great, soulful, jazzy, vibe-heavy music on the street. There's a sophistication to it and it's not at all what was in the air just a year ago. Gotta believe they were watching your channel in that time, too! :)
Bruno Mars got a lot better with the years. The success of Treasure made him go back to this "vintage" sound, and the album 24k Magic is the proof of that tight songwriting, great production and execution. The thing is that his first 2 albums are not that good. Some really good tunes, but the songwriting was very weak, even if backed by Mars awesome singing....
Bruno Mars being a good craftsman and consequently derivative, a copycat... I suppose is the best we should hope for in today's pop music, somebody at least ripping off proper talent from the past, because nobody is even trying to make something interesting or different NOW
@@tjsherpa but she’s still involved in the creative process, she writes her songs & sings them, she’s the one who decides lmao, why are you trying to undermine her talent
interesting reading all the opinons, for me i think good music is all forms of expression that have a creative or catchy idea. I love Bruno Mars but I'm glad the world has electronic productions too. I see some people don't get 2010's music, for the people who love it like me it's like a sugar hit burst of energy
Omg! I said THANK YOU out loud when you made the Paramore reference when talking about "Good For You"! Every time that song gets stuck in my head, I always subconsciously blend the two songs, and wondered if anyone else noticed the similarity. Great content as always!
I love how Rick does stuff like singing “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” on top of the #2 song. I do that all the time when I hear something derivative.
So amazing that Rick can review these songs and then at the next turn review Mozart with the same enthusiasm. His appreciation for all music is contagious.
your love for good music is infectious.. and not just "good music" because i'm sure many people would take issue with your choices. but what i love is how you focus on the actual music. and being able to express what is great or interesting about a melody or something. great stuff!
I laughed so hard when you started singing Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic in the Justin Bieber song as I started doing the exact same thing a couple of bars before! 😂
These modern top 10 lists are filled with 90% forgettable songs. Every time I listen to these I come away with the feeling that pop used to be so much better, but I wonder if that's right. Rick, I challenge you to pick a random week from the 70s or 80s and look at a top 10 list in the same way. I have a gut instinct that it will be filled with forgotten pop that was never very good. To say it another way, I think the trash to treasure ratio may be the same today as it was in the past. Maybe I'm wrong, but it would be an interesting video to watch. Like Billy Joel said in Keepin' the Faith, "The good old days weren't always good and tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems."
I took you up on that challenge. Randomly picked Hot 100, 1975 week of 6/28: 1) Love Will Keep Us Together - The Captain & Tennille 2) When Will I Be Loved - Linda Ronstadt 3) Wildfire - Michael Murphey 4) I'm Not Lisa - Jessie Colter 5) Love Won't Let Me Wait - Major Harris 6) The Hustle - Van McCoy 7) Listen To What The Man Said - Wings 8) Get Down, Get Down - Joe Simon 9) Magic - Pilot 10) Cut The Cake - Average White Band Only 4 of those songs I don't recognize right away. Half of this list still gets airplay.
@@EnoVarma I know and like numbers 1, 6, 7, 9 and 10. I don't think I know the others. I was surprised that number 1 only got to 32 here in the UK where it is a fairly well-known song.

Is this the start of a shift in pop music? A shift from the heavy house tracks and from the endless hip hop beats to a more melodic and more instrumentally focused pop scene? I do not know of course, but I have to agree with Rick that this chart has something and it sure was one of the best pop charts I've listened to in a long while. What do you guys think?
I agree. Definitely not all of the songs were ones I liked, but certain songs (silk sonic and doja cat) honestly felt like a breath of fresh air. Some songs played on the radio more recently I've liked much more than pop music from a few months ago.
@@Venpris I know that it's been pretty consistent in the past for music to shift between complex melodic music to simpler styles (I think the romantic to classical is an example if I remember correctly), and it goes back and forth somewhat often. I think right now might be the start of a shift from the simple pop music to the more complex again, which I'm quite excited for. I definitely don't think it will be immediate, there were still some pretty simple songs in this list but there were also some more interesting ones too.
Hope you’re right. Pop music isn’t my thing but I do feel it’s getting a lot more listenable these days. Seems to be gradually coming back to more actual songs rather than just beats and loops.
Personally, I love house and instrumental. The likes of tiesto, flo rida, Sean paul ect thats what i would call house. I think what your saying is the Trap beat rap (some of the Migos and ASAP guys are actually quite good to listen to as hip hop artists), as well as the marshmello, maroon 5 stuff which is what i think you mean by house which is just pop tbh which I agree is crap
Thre Billie Eilish song has a great lo-fi sound to it. The tone makes it feel like she recorded this in black and white on an old condenser microphone while wearing victory curls. I can't really explain it, but it just feels more sincere and I love it
What impresses me most about Billie is that her range of music styles is huge. She has songs that sound like a lounge singer singing jazz on top of a piano, and she has some great EDM sounding songs too. Her Euk songs are great, and the range she gets from her quiet voice is amazing. Much respect to Finneas as well and his masterful producing of her music. He layers in sound effects and folds in Billie's voice as background, perfectly.
I agree that there's definitely interesting retro stylization in this song going on, like I get a nice 50's night club vibe, especially on the vocals and because of this it sounds extra warm and intimate. I also immediately thought of a condenser mic and tube radios. Nice job all around, whoever came up with this idea, it works. And the song is good and Billie can sing like no problem, which also helps. lol
I try, but Billie Elish just does nothing for me. I keep trying at the insistence of my daughter to dig deeper into Billie's music, and for her I do, but it just puts me to sleep. I have listened to every single thing Billie has released commercially and I can't do it. I guess I would be the guy in 1964 saying; "The Beatles! I don't get it!" and then be run out of town for my opposing opinion of The Beatles.
It’s a certain vibe. Some people enjoy more chill low tones music. I mean I highly doubt you enjoy bon Iver then because they do the same thing. It’s very chill, very mellow, very just….there. It’s not supposed to grab your attention but it’s supposed to wisp you away into a cloud of comfort but then it just kinda makes you feel uneasy at the same time.
I am 53. I love 80% of what Billie does. I don't like he Beatles AT ALL. And NEVER have. THEY put ME to sleep. Seriously - I don't know even one Beatles song that I like or would even stay listening to if it came on the radio.
I said this in another comment, but its down to a lack of dynamics in her singing and vocal range (or at least what she uses). Listen to No Time to Die vs. Skyfall. One gradually builds and then finishes on a high point. The other just meanders with the exception of the orchestra. Her brother is clearly the better musician and is what keeps her music interesting, but I feel like if he was a part of a band or had a more "enthusiastic" vocalist, he'd produce even bigger and more memorable hits.
I agree with TheNraveles, I think ultimately she has only one emotion and one dynamic and although everything else that she and her brother do is interesting, she will need to show more range in that area to keep people's interest. Which I have no doubt she will
I will admit to being older than the usual demographic for music sales now. I had been hearing about Billie Eilish without ever listening to her and just assumed that since all of the kids (including my own) were listening to het that "obviously" she was some over-produced and auto-tuned pop singer. I finally just listened to one of her songs because my youngest really loves it and was shocked. She is a old-time jazz/blues singer! And she has an amazing, smoky voice that sneaks inside your head. Yes, the words of many of her songs sound like something an angsty teenager would write, but damn if her voice isn't straight out of the glory days of jazz. And yes, listening to her compared to the other songs in this set of 10, she is the odd one out - because she has an actual song to sing, and the others are a beat with the occasionally interesting few bars of melody or a good base riff.
I love how much funk is coming back! Funk and folk are hitting the pop charts more and more and I am HERE for it. Not so much a fan of the 80s-synth-revival stuff, but at least it's interesting. Refreshing to be able to enjoy modern pop music after a decade or so of blah.
As usual thank you for your reaction and for so many good info you share. I 'm a "girl of the 60s" (fan fact I found out only 44days younger than you), Italian from Tuscany. I discovered my preference for "anglophone" music, especially rock, when I was 12 and the access to import music in the Italian province was really difficult but I have always been an avid listener even if not being a musician and discovering your channel to me was like finally finding answers to so many unspoken questions although I admit for a non-musician sometimes your videos are quite challenging. This said, if you don't mind today I'd like to share a couple of info about Maneskin, a band I didn't like at first. They started playing since kids although the band formed really in 2016 when they were 14-15-15-16 as buskers in Via del Corso in Rome. Nearly 2 years later they participated to Italian XFactor: I don't know how that is in US but in Italy they are requested to stay for 2 months in a location where they prepare to act in 8 episodes of the TV show, each episode performing a cover. Each song is shortened and arranged to fit the TV show, the contestants have to learn a coreography as well, not much time is dedicated to the musical part because as long as it's enough for the TV act is fine. At the end of the season each of the finalists is granted with an EP of their performances. This to confirm that your evaluation was correct, their Beggin' cover is almost a demo. After they won the Eurovision Song contest people went crazy and started reacting to every video available on TH-cam even the ones of them playing of their home rooftop as kids, and this particular song, probably because no matter what, the song itself is a good one, ended up on top of the charts. There's a lot of talking about this band, some love them some hate them, I admit I didn't even consider them in 2017 when they did XF, if only I liked their chutzpah but nothing more. Since their latest album published in March, "Teatro d'ira vol.1" which is only 29mins of music but very good in my opinion for a young band (20-22), I started looking at them without prejudice and I became one of those looking at them with hope. I don't say you should like them, I just would be sorry for them to be evaluated based on a cover done on very special terms where they didn't even have much power. I know it's hard that you will read this comment but still, here we go. Thank you.
I was floored when I found out that song was Ed Sheeran. He has such a recognizable voice but this doesn’t sound like him at all. I’ve always thought he was a very talented songwriter and guitarist. He had a unique voice and unique lyrical content. This song could have come from any generic pop star and a far cry from his early songs that made him famous in the first place.
When you hear the acoustic version you recognise how much it really is like an old Ed Sheeran song, it’s just been produced really well into a summer electronic pop song
@@markmarney622 I'm gonna have to look that performance up tomorrow. I've seen similar happen with that other pop personality we're not supposed to talk about. Cornelia Street (live from Paris) is like night and day compared with the studio production version🤣

@@HenritheHorse Give Anomalie and Rob Araujo a listen. As well to one of my favorite groups: Moonchild, so elegant and refined. And, of course, don't forget Jacob Collier. There's so much great music around, why even listen to mainstream pop?
I was just recently thinking about how the bands from the early 2000's like Coldplay and Maroon 5 that have remained relevant did so by transitioning to club dance based pop music. I don't get it because "rock" music is still really popular, just not new songs but there is still clearly an audience for it. Now it seems Ed Sheehan also feels the need to make that same type of club pop music despite becoming hugely popular with his own unique style.
Coldplay still make rock music, they just switch it up a ton. They are far more daring than Maroon 5 and Ed Sheeran. One minute they make generic pop songs made specifically for the charts and then they make rocks songs with jazz or a 10 minute prog/space rock track. I can say that the latter two songs are definitely not club dance based pop music.
yeah, that's a super unfair comparison then. It is probably even a backhanded compliment that they played so well that he could not tell that it was live.
This is my first time hearing that track-I’m a Billie fan, so I know I’m late-and I had heard a lot of negative about this latest album. But I really like the song. A lot. Probably for the same reasons Rick does.
Regarding Maneskin: They covered Beggin' during their appearance at X Factor Italy in 2017 and released originally in 2018. You should check especially their songs in italian language from their current album "Teatro d'Ira" like Vent'anni, La paura del buio, Coraline and not to forget Zitti e buoni. They are completely different from Beggin'

@@dagliocchibui No, they aren't. Their looks is the least interesting part of them to me, but I think they are good. I hope they will bloom as an international band, but it's still too early to tell.

I genuinely hope Måneskin will continue doing their thing in the future and not “sell out” or just fizzle out. I’ve been getting into them since they won Eurovision and would hate to see them switch to blander, repetitive English songs just to please mainstream American ears. When you listen to their original music and their incredible lesser known Italian songs it def shows more of what they can do. Their Teatro D’ira album is just really amazing to me and I love that they are bringing something refreshing and energetic in 2021!
Maneskin are sold out from day one, they are nothing more than a cheap posing product of Italian thrash tv. Eventually they will plunge like everyone else.
Oh man, only playing the first portion of Happier Than Ever hurt me. Would love more Billie breakdowns, maybe even a "What makes this song great" on that tune. It is so massive, and the build up and pay off on the later portion are so powerful. Billie sounds incredible over loud guitars! Love the content, as always Mr Beato!
I really like that Rick dives into so many genres of music. I started out as rock lover when I was young but I started listening to pop and dance music in the 80s. I have been in many cover bands and original bands. Now I find myself working as a DJ on the weekends, I am glad I had exposure to so many different styles of music and have been able to apply that appreciation to make money entertaining people with a multitude of different styles of music. Thank you Rick for having such and open mind and sharing your love of music with all of us out here!!
I like how you qualified what you were saying about production elements like Autotune, toward the end there. Those tools can matter a lot to making a bad song worse, or making a good song really pop! When the production is good and serves the song, we should thank heaven for every tool that exists, and when the production is bad and lets the song down we should wish the production team never learned to use a mouse.
I don’t like the Ed Sheeran song but the autotune is not the problem. Ed can sing but on a song like that it is appropriate to use autotune cause that is the sound. Do I like the sound of the song in general? No but I see what Ed was going for and it makes complete sense they processed the vocals the way they did
Auto Tune can save an entire project. I worked with an artist who sang everything just a cent or two flat. When you are that close to being on pitch the application of pitch correction produces no audible artifacts. In fact the best selling artist of the last decade was pitch corrected, although unaware of it.
@@10bbremer It's how they used to just up the reverb in the 1950's and 60's to hide bad singing. It creates an era-defining sound, but good singers don't really need it and it actually takes away from their artistry.
@@10bbremer But when you can simply pitch everything up (or conversely pitch the music track down to fit the vocals!), why use Autotune which interferes much more with the actual vocals and often removes things like a natural timbre?
Or you can do the old school method of doing mutiple takes until you get it right. I am not against auto-tune per se but I do think it had made many "musicians" super lazy and frankly I find it disheartening so many music fans just tolerate it as "that's the way it is".
Billy Eilish's song reminds me of when Peal Jam's Last Kiss hit the charts... not that the songs are similar, but that they are so DIFFERENT than everything else on the charts at the time.
i'm overall happy with the direction pop music is going, borrowing from the 80's and the 70's, the only one that sounds like a boring pop song with zero character was surprisingly the ed sheeran one.
grats for the shout out to Maneskin, I agree their Eurovision Song is better than their Beggin' cover (which they recordered like 4 years ago), it was sweept up in the current interest this band is gathering in Europe right now. I general I think they are a Band Rick would like, as they live record, and have the ability to write genuinely interesting songs, despite being all in their early 20s. I am pretty sure we will heard from them in the next months and years
Unfortunately I don't think so, because it seems like the majority of people prefer their repetitive english songs because they're more easy to digest at first listen. Meanwhile, their italian power ballads mostly score low, unfortunately. I became a huge fan of the band and my only fear is that they will sell out and end up making fast, quick, english poppy songs bc that's what sells.
Oh... I was looking forward to seeing his face when Happier Than Ever changed, a pitty that he stopped before. I have been learning to play the guitar for some months and I feel like I don't know anything when I see him play along that easily! How cool to be able to do that 😊
@@austinz9310 was it actually paid for and credited? I had no idea. I heard it, but didn’t know they paid for it. In that case, cool! What’s old is new. If they paid for it, they did it right and made it their own 👍

It just makes me happy to watch your reviews. Love the energy and the warmth in which you convey your critique, which is mostly on the positive side, despite the songs perhaps being of "lesser" quality of what you personally enjoy.
Beggin actually was a cover they have done 4 years ago on x factor. After the talent show they released this low quality studio version with zero ambitions, that's why it sounds bad

@@miraggg this one and "I wanna..." are in English and more pop-oriented; that's why they get so much visibility and listens (in the US in particular, and that "drives" visibility and then listens in the rest of the world of course) while e.g. the intimistic Coraline (full italian lyrics, quite nuanced and interesting writing btw, with a musical elements reminiscent of the late '60s and some actual change in the track) gets zero consideration - it's an old problem that seems to be worse generation after generation: the vast majority of people seem repelled by anything they don't understand word for word; "music first" listeners seem to be a minority.
@@hlb979 I fully agree; the songs that got the most recognition are pretty predictable, slightly repetitive and really easy to get in your ear after the first listen and I don’t mind them, they sound cool enough but the best songs are the ones that you hear and think oooh I’ll have to listen to that song again because you can’t quite wrap your head around it immediately and it stays interesting after the 100th listen because it’s got lots of stuff going on Coraline is a great example of that and also an example of the Italian lyrics being superior; I don’t mind their ventures into English, but I think the ones they’ve written so far sound like just throwing together a bunch of phrases and figures of speech that are relatively easy to memorise but they don’t actually say much… the Italian songs on the other hand always have a point, they always tell some kind of a story or convey certain emotions, because of course it’s easier to express what you really want to say in a language you’re fluent in

@@rohomaha1614 Fair enough. I didn't say the music was brilliant, but for those who are only judging it on the first part, they would do well to listen to the rest. Or perhaps it isn't intellectual, but emotional and different people are better enabled by different things?
Having listened to a fair amount of music from the "Jazz Age" 1920s and early 1930s, that Billie Eilish song definitely has a 1920s vibe to it, IMO. I must admit, being primarily a classic rock and older funk/soul fan, I've never heard her until now. I have no idea of what she generally does, but it's nice to hear a bit of a nod to very early recorded music. Especially from the younger generation.
Sigh ....it's a bit sad really that this is what he hit first not what actually won them the prestigious competition in their own country or the Europe wide contest in what many fans of that would agree was one of its most competitive in years and both of the great performances as they are blocked in the US. Nor the song they sort of are using now to break the mainstream. I've been trying to bring these guys to his attention and it maybe the way it happens puts him off them - shame :-(

Randomly picked Hot 100, 1975 week of 6/28:
1) Love Will Keep Us Together - The Captain & Tennille
2) When Will I Be Loved - Linda Ronstadt
3) Wildfire - Michael Murphey
4) I'm Not Lisa - Jessie Colter
5) Love Won't Let Me Wait - Major Harris
6) The Hustle - Van McCoy
7) Listen To What The Man Said - Wings
8) Get Down, Get Down - Joe Simon

Forgettable just like most of it for years now.
Personally, I love house and instrumental. The likes of tiesto, flo rida, Sean paul ect thats what i would call house. Thre Billie Eilish song has a great lo-fi sound to it. The tone makes it feel like she recorded this in black and white on an old condenser microphone while wearing victory curls. I can't really explain it, but it just feels more sincere and I love it
It's an aesthetic - at least the presence of _having_ one - which is sorely lacking from popular music songwriting.
Feels sincere because the elements we consider natural and talented are not drowned out by unnatural and mechanical sounds.
And the song is good and Billie can sing like no problem, which also helps. lol
🙉 No
I try, but Billie Elish just does nothing for me.
I don’t like her either
Which I have no doubt she will

that song is a masterpiece literally the best one out of all of them
For those who haven't heard the full Happier Than Ever song by Billie, check out the transition and then the punk rock finish.
What I like is that the pop charts are becoming more diverse. Hopefully the trend will continue.

Rick dives into rabbit holes & finds the bottom SO QUICKLY -- direct and to the point -- that it makes musical minutiae interesting. THAT is ART.
13:39 Every little thing Rick does is magic.
Love how he spotted that progression immediately!
Billy Eilish's song reminds me of when Peal Jam's Last Kiss hit the charts... not that the songs are similar, but that they are so DIFFERENT than everything else on the charts at the time.
Truly Indy. Sounds like Feist a little.
Its billie eilish not billy
i'm overall happy with the direction pop music is going, borrowing from the 80's and the 70's, the only one that sounds like a boring pop song with zero character was surprisingly the ed sheeran one.
Surprisingly?
Love these videos from Rick. His ear is amazing!
man Billie's song is so good here we didnt even got to the swap in the middle of the song
Check out her influence Sara Lov solo and the band Devics for more of this stuff.
@@orlock20 mediocre at best
grats for the shout out to Maneskin, I agree their Eurovision Song is better than their Beggin' cover (which they recordered like 4 years ago), it was sweept up in the current interest this band is gathering in Europe right now.
@@Thundechile IIRC they will cover "I wanna be your dog"
@@ivanrossi2051 While they didn't do it with Iggy, they did play I Wanna Be Your Dog at a gig a couple days ago

Kiss Me More chorus is Olivia Newton John’s “Let’s Get Physical” chorus.
exactly! I heard this as well. Also it has some Gwen Stefani shouting going on as well.
They paid for it
@@HeadbangoO why, it’s just an interpolation of the melody and it was credited and paid for. I don’t see a problem here.
@@austinz9310 was it actually paid for and credited? I had no idea. I heard it, but didn’t know they paid for it. In that case, cool! What’s old is new. If they paid for it, they did it right and made it their own 👍
That first song sounds so much like the 70s, Curtis Mayfield's estate is gonna sue!

@@GizzyDillespee What? They didn't?? ;)
The Bruno Mars was definitely the best done track musically. The chords and arrangement were really good. A few of the pop tracks were just too typical sounding but most were interesting.
Silk Sonic* if you please.
For those who haven't heard the full Happier Than Ever song by Billie, check out the transition and then the punk rock finish.
The version is bad overall
@@michaelolympus5994 they have so many better songs, which is why I'm surprised that this 4 year old cover from x factor (when they were what.. 16 years old) is getting so much success.. but I'm glad I somehow learned about this band and happy to see them gaining international recognition
@@hlb979 I fully agree; the songs that got the most recognition are pretty predictable, slightly repetitive and really easy to get in your ear after the first listen and I don’t mind them, they sound cool enough but the best songs are the ones that you hear and think oooh I’ll have to listen to that song again because you can’t quite wrap your head around it immediately and it stays interesting after the 100th listen because it’s got lots of stuff going on
Coraline is a great example of that and also an example of the Italian lyrics being superior; I don’t mind their ventures into English, but I think the ones they’ve written so far sound like just throwing together a bunch of phrases and figures of speech that are relatively easy to memorise but they don’t actually say much… the Italian songs on the other hand always have a point, they always tell some kind of a story or convey certain emotions, because of course it’s easier to express what you really want to say in a language you’re fluent in
@@miraggg and we all know that the original and the first cover are much much better.
Really love these videos. Can't wait for the next Metal one, hoping we'll finally get better songs (or at least more diverse) than the previous one.
The problem is that the crappy autotuned pop metal is all that usually makes the Spotify lists.

I wish you reacted to the second half of Happier then ever, that song is amazing!
Mega kudos to Rick for being positive, respectful and his professional music insight!
Just wanted to stay positive here 😂!
Exactly what I thought about Ed’s voice in his new song. I love Ed, it seems like he’s trying something else, which is better than keeping the same vibe every single album/ song.
My suspicion is that after having a daughter and stepping back a bit from music he’s leaving a lot more in the hands of other people.
I love how Rick just listened to the songs and just immideatly played them exactly like the record with relative pitch...

I very much agree.

If you like old jazz, you will enjoy listening to her other records.
Yup. Very 30s vibe to me.
Earns my respect just for being, "a song".
Lol.
Beggin was actually recorded in 2017, when they were not famous, and so did not have a great budget to record, just a note:)
