Damn.. I am so glad I clicked on this video.. I wanted to have macos for photo and video editing, windows 10 for gaming and my family and linux for the fun and freedom. All running at same time. I found about the bare metal hypervisor but it was soooo complicated for me that I just gave up. Your video are awesome thanks....
Great video, good solution! One question I have. How do you fixed the trim issue for SSD on ZFS on Linux. As I know trim support for SSD on ZFS on Linux is supported with the very new version 0.8 at first. Proxmox will integrate ZoL version 0.8 not before Proxmox version 6.0, as I have heard. Using SSD without trim support could result in data lost. Another question, as you show you use two grafic cards for the Hackintosh and one for the win 10. So no grafic card left for the Proxmox host. Troubleshooting could be very hard in this configuration. How you follow the boot process, for example. The motherboard in your description don't have an option for KVM, ILO, IMM or similar.
Wow! I'm blown away by your solution! This whole time I've been thinking that Linux and QEMU would've been the best of both worlds when it was really a bare-metal hypervisor that I really wanted! Plus thank you for mentioning ZFS! I went down a file system rabbit hole sometime last year but forgot which one I was wanting to try someday.
Seriously considering trying this. Thanks for the info! BTW does iMessages, facetime, and handoff work on the vm? iMessages would be the big one for me.
Cool Teresa! I was really impressed with your TH-cam dual and triple virtual environments expertise. Brought back old memories of Solaris ZFS, Containers and early VMware. I just got a 32GB i7-13700H, 14C , 2560x1600 laptop and would need to know if there is support for running Win 11 & Apple silicone M2 environments? Wouold love to work together.
you can run "the new way" almost on any hardware unlike the stupid old way, but that does not mean it's good idea. I never recommended even a single time to use laptop for it, because it's proprietery and very limited platform where you would not be able to take full advantage of all those amazing features and advantages
Good Video, you scratch only the surface of what Proxmox can do.. actually you can create a MONSTER with cheaper hardware, just maybe hard energy bill but amazingly powerfull. I have working since a year a Dell R810 Cuad CPU (10 cores each) with 512 gb ram... and you can run a full Azure stack in one machine if you want. Also several Win-Linux-Mac workstations from 8 to 32 gigs of ram. VDI is not major problem with Spice client and Passtrough also got improved, so you can share your hard between several VMs transparently (one at time). Also, the most important thing. you can run containers (LXC ) and Docker (create a VM for that since is not native) but instead to create a VM for run apps, you containerize the app and is like one VM. Ceph is another feature, so cloud (virtualized private, hybrid and public) is no an issue at all. Of course is not the paradise, needs some atention and also the learning curve is steep but totaly worth. Keep forward!!! and good content..!! BTW your dogs are amazing..!!
Hi @morgonaut I’d like to use this config assuming one can run a full Hackintosh feature set including iMessage, Bluetooth, Sleep/Wake, etc. Is this possible? Just wanting to know before I engage your support via Patreon. I have an existing 8700k build that does all this along with 10g networking. But I like the idea of migrating this to a single system that consolidates all the various OS installs. 10g networking is important so also wondering if that is supported through the passthrough option. Definitely interested to engage you to financially support your work, but just first need to get clarity on these questions. Thanks.
no, I'm running much more powerfull virtualization server since that time

And I just want to ask, if you finally show how to? I think about that since this video two years back, as I saw the yesterday video, collecting information is primary my daily routine. I think about my 10gig network, as like I understand qemu can masquerade as some network card, did it worked properly? And about the gpu on the intel, it is possible to work without hassle with shikigva etc? Looking forward to see another video, but on point. We understand on half a video, that you must clarify, that you have the better solutions. At first, is great idea, but make a point. Thank you, greetings from Brno

Hi Morgonaut... First of all - GREAT GREAT content! Need ur advice: i just bought Z390 Designare, i7 8700K, RX590 Nitro+, 32GB HyperX Predator, A firewire card and the recommended Bluetooth+Wifi card - this was based off the other video you had put out. My Use: Stable & Consistent system for Pro Audio and Video Production and on the side if gaming or Linux fun can happen - Great. What's ur advice?
for someone is virtualization better, for someone not, it depends on your needs and expectations. I always discuss for long time with each one workflow in detail before building a server

so if I want to use Catalina what is better, using virtualization and dedicate all Hardware to it or making a Hackintosh ? Seems much more simple to go the first route, no? This is my hardware MotherboardZ10PE-D8 WS CPU2 E5-2650V3 RAM 32 Gbyte Graphics1050 Ti I can change this to RX580 since Catalina does not run on nVidia thx subscribed ! :)
it's not possible to shoot single video which I could explain everything and how to do it, because each configuration is different, each one's needs are different and I focus on to always optimize each build for each client specificaly, so he/she have the best possible performance in certain workflow
This is really the future. Having kids, buying a 16 threads cpu (probably ryzen), and get an rx 580, and a monitor, I can save some money instead of buying 2 PCs. I assume it can also have different usb assigned for mouse and keyboard right? Probably need extra RAM and SSDs though, but still it's cheaper, and get the benefit of VMs like you mentioned.. wow.. very exciting.
@@MorgonautHackintosh awesome! I think my only concern is the gaming peformance on windows, how much it will take a hit. Also Ryzen 5/7 doesn't have internal gpu so it means I need 3 GPUs probably (1 for host linux, 1 for guest windows, 1 for guest mac), which sucks. I can finally see normal user buying high thread cpus for this reason, and Zen 2 is really tempting now. More and more users can justify to buy Ryzen 9 with 24 threads.
@@MorgonautHackintosh So I just need 2? awesome ! Anyway, will wait for ryzen 2 launch and hopefully gonna get minimum of 12 threads CPU so I can run MacOS and Windows 10. How is the gaming performance compared to native windows 10? I think lots of people would like to know that. You showed the MacOS benchmark perf and it looks great. Also lots will be interested in your planned Ryzen video I'd bet... Great content, I agree with the other comment, this is probably your best video yet!
@@MorgonautHackintosh No issues I don't need top level performance just a mini-itx machine which I can carry with me by the way it is good in multi-tasking. AMD also told in their Computex keynote that their new Ryzen processors are 1-2% better in single core performance than Intel. I know Ryzen doesn't have quick-sync technology integrated graphics.
my 8 CORE i9-9900k gets over 5000 points in Geekbench r20. Threadripper 6000 but it needs for it 16 cores!!! Count it yourself how "poweful" is single AMD core :)))))
Is there currently a way for me to access guides to complete this setup? I have looked through your channel and website and don't see anything. Is the only way to purchase the remote session tiers, which are currently sold out? Thanks!
I think there cannot be any good written guide which would be suited exactly for you. it's not possible to prepare any step by step guide or video tutorial because it's so complex and wide and each build is unique and each one's needs are different, so even if I would shoot 10 hours long tutorial, first - nobody would watch it or and second - nobody would understand that and third - it would not work for any other hardware than the one I prepared it for. Also most people forget about fact computer should be tweaked and optimized for exact specific use case and that involves much more than just following some tutorial. So I plan live stream with example of configuring on single build.
One thing I've learned from running Mac OS as a virtual machine via Proxmox is you cannot get audio on the virtual mac. System preferences sound input / output are empty. I have experienced this using Clover and Opencore virtual proxmox builds. It appears none of the QEMU emulated audio devices are compatible with macOS. You can passthrough an external USB / PCie audio solution, but imo the build is incomplete because it lacks the full functionality of how a Mac should be.
Stratamania You are welcome. I am waiting for the new Ryzen 9 3900x to give it a shot. I am researching zfs and RAID-z in the meantime, have no experience with it whatsoever.
Teresa, great idea... and great work. Congrats. I have a question though: How many SSDs did you use in total? Is this a 3-wide Z1 or a 4-wide Z1. Did you stripe 2 x Z1 vdevs after to obtain this performance? An answer would be highly appreciated
I currently own a Alienware R5. Would this be possible on that build? Or am I better off buying new hardware similar to what you used? Also the link to the amazon motherboard doesn’t work. Thank you for all your great work.
there's nothing like "the best bare-metal hypervisor " - for each one would be different one for different use case. It's like with cars, there's nothing like best car for everyone. So it's clear I use several hypervisors for different use cases

Sand Mann you dont need vga for proxmox host. You can log in proxmox via web or console terminal.
Im blown away - i want this.

Which hypervisor are you running here? Looks cool!
Hey, this is just great! I am going to build this. Such a smart way to run multiple systems.
yes, thank you

Glad I could help
This new way works in older laptops? I got a Toshiba z30 i7
Good Video, you scratch only the surface of what Proxmox can do.. actually you can create a MONSTER with cheaper hardware, just maybe hard energy bill but amazingly powerfull.
I know what is that about. Spice? Nice but maOS client? No
Great presentation and great level of knowledge!
@Computer Shop di Vito Nero - thank you 💜
Hi @morgonaut I’d like to use this config assuming one can run a full Hackintosh feature set including iMessage, Bluetooth, Sleep/Wake, etc. Thanks.
as I say in my video - you can passthrough ANY physical device to ANY OS!
Hi Therese, was wondering what hypervisor are you using
Are you still running this setup as of today? How has it been performing.?
no, I'm running much more powerfull virtualization server since that time
And I just want to ask, if you finally show how to? I think about that since this video two years back, as I saw the yesterday video, collecting information is primary my daily routine. I think about my 10gig network, as like I understand qemu can masquerade as some network card, did it worked properly? And about the gpu on the intel, it is possible to work without hassle with shikigva etc? Looking forward to see another video, but on point. We understand on half a video, that you must clarify, that you have the better solutions. At first, is great idea, but make a point. Thank you, greetings from Brno
sure I will show, but I'm thinking how to do it so I can show it only to people who act kind to me and with respect and not to idiots and haters which for sure don't deserve to benefit from my work:)

i just bought Z390 Designare, i7 8700K, RX590 Nitro+, 32GB HyperX Predator, A firewire card and the recommended Bluetooth+Wifi card - this was based off the other video you had put out.

@@MorgonautHackintosh could you do an how to? thx btw great videos!
it's not possible to shoot single video which I could explain everything and how to do it, because each configuration is different, each one's needs are different and I focus on to always optimize each build for each client specificaly, so he/she have the best possible performance in certain workflow
Okay, great. But I don't understand, how do you do that? Which virtualization tool do you use?
Introduction to video series about it: th-cam.com/video/lztH7BUxIoM/w-d-xo.html
This is really the future. Having kids, buying a 16 threads cpu (probably ryzen), and get an rx 580, and a monitor, I can save some money instead of buying 2 PCs. I assume it can also have different usb assigned for mouse and keyboard right? Probably need extra RAM and SSDs though, but still it's cheaper, and get the benefit of VMs like you mentioned.. wow.. very exciting.
as I said in this video - you can dedicate to any VM any physical device connected or inside this build
More and more users can justify to buy Ryzen 9 with 24 threads.
you don't need any gpu for host
@@MorgonautHackintosh So I just need 2? awesome ! Anyway, will wait for ryzen 2 launch and hopefully gonna get minimum of 12 threads CPU so I can run MacOS and Windows 10. How is the gaming performance compared to native windows 10? I think lots of people would like to know that. You showed the MacOS benchmark perf and it looks great. Also lots will be interested in your planned Ryzen video I'd bet... Great content, I agree with the other comment, this is probably your best video yet!

@@MorgonautHackintosh Wait for the Ryzen 3000, then do an AMD build with x570 motherboards.
but it would still not perform as good as this build for video encoding
Hello, what is the software used for emulate mac os?
I'm not emulating macOS
@@MorgonautHackintosh Thanks for answer :)
On which OS do the virtual systems run? Windows? And what is the name of the virtualization software?
Proxmox VE 5.4 (look carefully below the red circle around 4:30).
The virtualisation looks to QEMU
@@BanksyLuk Thanks I could see Qemu was used within it but was not aware of what the GUI based software was.

Teresa, great idea... and great work. Congrats. I have a question though: How many SSDs did you use in total?
Is this a 3-wide Z1 or a 4-wide Z1. Did you stripe 2 x Z1 vdevs after to obtain this performance?

I said that in video - 3x SSD + 1x HDD. It's also in video description :(

in next video series th-cam.com/video/lztH7BUxIoM/w-d-xo.html
One Question though: Can I passtrough usb ports for a high-performance Audio interface without changing latancy?
as I said in video, you can passthrough anything, so then VM has direct access to hardware
Finally, i do not have to contact with the outside world for a single moment while I render those 4K videos. Thanks!
Which is the best bare-metal hypervisor ? Which one are you using?
there's nothing like "the best bare-metal hypervisor " - for each one would be different one for different use case. It's like with cars, there's nothing like best car for everyone. So it's clear I use several hypervisors for different use cases

This is SO AWESOME!!! I've been trying to set up a fully working Hackintosh for the past week, with lots of headaches. But seeing this, I wanna put all that aside and build what you have.
Does WiFi, Bluetooth, AirDrop, Handoff, iMessage, FaceTime, etc. work on the VM Mac?
Is it possible to do this on Asus Z370E motherboard?
If I set up the hardware, shall I contact you on Patreon for help with setting this up?
I've only watched a couple of your videos and only today, but already, I think you have one of the best tech channels! :) Keep it up!
