    I'm a small engine mechanic and never in my 6 years of working on these have I or has any mechanic actually gotten to see what he's really fixing and what's really going on in those chambers until now. This is amazing. If only this where possible in any engine to see whats going on in there then we mechanics know fixing engines would become obsolete. We could know if an engine is running lean or rich.

    People take for granted internal combustion engines. Not me. I've been in awe of them for 45 years and still am. They are one of the most incredible, almost magical inventions ever devised. That you can harness and control explosions and channel that energy to propel vehicles is amazing. The force of the combustion just to drive the piston down the cylinder is amazing enough but then when you think there still has to be enough residual energy for the piston to turn a crankshaft, which in turn turns the driveshaft, which in turn still has enough force to turn the vehicle wheels propelling a vehicle just boggles the imagination. Then add on top of all this the durability and reliability of internal combustion engines, especially considering they hold together under such stress from the non-stop controlled explosions and you have for me a head-shaking miracle.

    The rubbing alcohol has a high water content, that is what you see collecting in the combustion chamber

    • @dragondaze
      @dragondaze 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It was because he just poured the alcohol into the carb and it was not being metered by the jet!

    • @MrPotatoPro
      @MrPotatoPro 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      No, it's only 9% water. The amount of Rubbing alcohol used would not leave enough water behind to fill the chamber. As dragondaze said, It was alcohol without a controlled injection, notice the rate at which it was entering the cylinder, filling it well before combustion.

    • @Weissenschenkel
      @Weissenschenkel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also ethanol works better if the intake has rough walls -- gasoline works better with polished ones.
      HTH

      @SWREngineering 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Neither likes a polished intake.

    • @dolebiscuit
      @dolebiscuit 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      No, it was collecting because the ignition timing wasn't tuned for alcohol, which is the coolest part of the video in my opinion.
      You can see the piston moving noticeably faster with the alcohol, and eventually the ignition timing gets desynchronized with the piston.
      This, combined with too rich of an air-fuel mixture is why the engine was flooded (though it still continued to run, another impressive feat).
      Essentially this video demonstrates why tuning and sometimes part swaps must be done in order to switch a gasoline engine to ethanol, but also demonstrates the performance gains from doing so.

    Try a similar idea with gear boxes while running and changing gears. The smaller gear boxes from motorbikes would be easier because the have a side panel you can replace for a nice view. i would love to see the clutch on a sequential gearbox.
    Also somehow maybe you can modify a car transmission to see inside while its running (maybe modify a section of the shell/cut out and repaced with clear plastic) you may need to try with and without oil for different results.

    • @BruceWayneReal
      @BruceWayneReal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just realized that there isn't really 200 proof drinking spirits. You could get some everclear and put some molecular sieves to remove the rest of the water. Using molecular sieves is an exothermic reaction so it would probably evaporate some of the Ethanol.

    • @PhysicsDude55
      @PhysicsDude55 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would work with lower concentrations of alcohol, but like with the rubbing alcohol, the water builds up. Alcohol will burn above ~100 proof (like Bacardi 151) so I'm guessing it would run for a little bit before either hydrolocking or not combusting because of all the water. But yeah, 40 proof alcohol will definitely not run at all.

    • @silentbob267
      @silentbob267 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That would probably be very dangerous. Acetylene is flammable when burned in atmospheric levels of oxygen but mixed with pure oxygen in the proper ratios it becomes explosive.

    • @artificialimpulse9713
      @artificialimpulse9713 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean pumping more acetylene into the chamber would make more soot than reduce soot?

    • @silentbob267

      To a point yes. At some point too much acetylene would start displacing air and limit the amount of acetylene that could burn.

      Woah. I was wondering about that, you gotta use 99%. Even 1% water is gonna create vapor but it'll evaporate and head out pretty quick.
      29% water it's a wonder that it even turned over, but it wouldn't have any power. And Tequila I doubt would be any better.

    • @orangejoe204
      @orangejoe204 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      oddly enough that's considered a significant positive in alcohol-burning drag cars. They run super rich and the unburnt alcohol blown out in the exhaust takes so much heat out of the engine they don't need water-cooling perforations in the engine block, meaning it can take much higher force before it blows up.

      gasoline is a solvent. Motors that run ethanol (not isopropanol) do not get carbon deposits.

    • @doughopkinsjr
      @doughopkinsjr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      okleydokley I think maybe you're talking about methanol. ethanol can only be combusted with an e85 mixture (15% gasoline) 85% ethanol efficiently. there isn't enough explosive force in ethanol to run a car with enough power. I race my race car on methanol. there is one bad downside to anything ending in thanol is corrosion. methanol is a rust/corrosion breeding ground. oil has to be changed more often and I use almost 3 times more methanol than gasoline. so yes there is no carbon deposits in the motor but a lot of people who run methanol run an oil additive called top lube (kinda like 2 stroke oil) to prevent upper cylinder rust. but this will cause small carbon deposits. have a good one okey

    This is good video for people didn't really don't understand . Fuel burns just it does not explode . When that happens you have detonation Which causes damage. The alcohol would burn better or should I say complete if you had much more common . This is why Henry Ford years ago chose gas over alcohol . There are other factors as well .

      Robert Gift normally on the L head engine, the spark plug is in between the valves and the edge of the cylinder. He moved it so you could watch the flame front travel. This is an old style engine that (now) only small engines use because the block and head are easier to machine.

    • @stonelaughter
      @stonelaughter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Yeah that's what the flywheel is for, to keep it turning between firing strokes. Without the flywheel the engine would have to be a LOT more efficient and have a LOT less friction.

    • @byronmorgan3492
      @byronmorgan3492 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      That's part of how a 4 stroke engine works. intake valve open, piston down (stroke 1, flywheel momentum) drawing air/fuel, intake close, piston up (stroke 2), spark, bang, hot gas expands and pushes piston down (stroke 3), exhaust valve opens, hot gasses vent pressure, piston rises with flywheel momentum and forces out almost all the burnt exhaust (stroke 4), exhaust valve closes, return to start.

      Alistral while you are correct there's only one thing you got wrong. The piston actually does not pull or push air fuel mixture/exhaust. as it is under high pressure the gasses try to find low pressure areas to equal out. Science 👽

      I think they are trolls and you may be on to something in which we are finally able to see the internal combustion take place hence with that available to you, you could possibly stumble onto something such as a cleaner and cheaper type of fuel and actually be able to show positive proof that it will work. Think about it...You might be barking up a tree that they don't want anyone to discover what is actually up in the the tree, a cleaner and better alternative, cheaper, and safer fuel..?!...I relate it to the man who actually built a working automobile engine that ran on WATER....He mysteriously died and all of his work and notes about the water engine were taken and hidden so has to allow no one to follow his work to further develope it....I think he lived in Australia...His story is on youtube somewhere... So...the trolls dislike your video purposefully to deter as many followers as possible...It's my only explanation for so many dislikes...I think you are onto something and this is amazing to watch..God Bless and stay safe.

    The reason alcohol was not burning cleanly, is because the gas engine was made to burn gas efficiently so the fuel to air mixture was messed up when you tried alcohol, Lucky you didn't do that for too long since liquid dose not compress, What we call this is Hydro-locking
    Hydro-locking normally leads to bent rods since it's the weeks component to give but with this set up if I had to hazard a guess that glass would of did something.

    Awesome video. I'm glad you've had the time and interest in sharing this with us. One thing about ethanol. Did you know that here in Brazil our vehicles run on both alcohol and gasoline? It's the so-called "flex" technology, whereby you can feed in any proportion of gasoline and ethanol to your engine and it runs ok. However, even our regular gasoline has 27.5% alcohol - as part of a Federal Government program to stimulate the sugar-alcohol industry (it's absurd, but there's nothing we can do about it!) - our alcohol is produced from sugar cane. My question to you is: what is the behavior of the combustion at a similar gasoline-ethanol concentration? Is there a way for you to conduct that experiment there and share with us? I appreciate. Happy 2018!

    • @exoticcar5482

      That is achievable thanks to new fuel injecting technology but this engine doesn't do well with ethanol as it's carbureted

    Why does the spark plug spark during the exhaust stroke??

    • @NGC1433
      @NGC1433 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Jack Le why not? It's a very primitive ignition system. it just sparks every revolution of the crank. Half of them happens to be exhaust... NBD.

    • @JackLe1127
      @JackLe1127 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it can easily be corrected by the cam shaft. He already had it for the intake and exhaust valves.

    • @blahorgaslisk7763
      @blahorgaslisk7763 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      This engine has a very simple ignition system where the spark is generated as a magnet on the flywheel passes the ignition coil. So every revolution will generate a spark, even if it's the exhaust stroke.
      If the combustion was reasonably complete then the spark on exhaust doesn't cause any problem, but if combustion was incomplete it can ignite the exhausts. The way these engines are built this isn't really a problem. But if it happens a lot then you may want to adjust to a slightly leaner fuel / air mix.
