🎵 JS Bach - Prelude and Fugue in G BWV 550 (Organ of ROMSEY ABBEY)

  • Played as the organ voluntary at the end of the Romsey Abbey Virtual Church, here is the performance of JS Bach's Prelude and Fugue in G BWV 550.
This is a historical organ built by JW Walker in 1858 and has 39 stops in total. It's actually a 5-division organ, despite there only being 3 manuals; it has a nave division which is playable from the Great.
I really hope you enjoy this terrifically uplifting (and challenging!) piece by the great JSB!

What a treat. This work is pure sunshine. Clearly a show-off piece for a young Bach, and a technical feat for any organist today and you made it dance into the wonderful accoustic of Romsey! Thank you!!

Hey Richard This is a really special sound. The more I've listened the more I've heard. You really are a wonderful musician and know just how to get the organ singing. Many thanks.

Only a few organists can play that piece to perfection, and you are among them. BRAVO.

Hi Richard. Thanks for this glory. I enjoy the pedal to keyboard couplers, plus the beautiful console cabinetry. Your playing as always is so full of fun and real joy. I am, as usual, flabbergasted by your skills. Am feeling honored to be a friend and minor patron as an amateur student organist. BiS Forever!

A most impressive performance of a masterpiece by Bach that demands a flawless technique from the player (which is always evident in your uploads! Those people who have hit the 'dislike' cleary suffer from acute jealousy!). Equally impressive is the fabulous quality of this recording - you really have captured the Walker organ in all its glory. Just fabulous!

Aaahhhh ... REAL acoustics - so lovely ! Yes - despite the excellence of sample sets, there is a difference between sampled and digitized acoustics, and actual acoustics - at least to my ears. I'm sure some may point out that what I'm hearing is actually "digital". Yes, true - but it's a single-pass digitized real acoustic - not a two-pass digitized digitized acoustic.
And yes Richard - it is a *MAGNIFICENT* performance - thank you!

Thanks very much! It’s a nice acoustic in Romsey - not too resonant but just enough to add some colour. It’s a very nice organ indeed, and I’m very lucky to be able to play there fairly often.

@@beautyinsound - and we are the fortunate recipients to share in it !
I do have a question - if you please - along the lines of acoustics and the "Nancy" sample set. I seem to recall in one of your posts you mentioned something to the effect that, in youtube performances (your own, and other youtube organists) using Nancy, it's difficult to render with suitable clarity due to the almost-excessive acoustic. I've not been able to locate that remark, but am wondering if you recall in which video it might be. Or, if you might be able to speak to it briefly. I'm trying to sort out if just my ears, or if others are also hearing the same thing. Nancy has a wonderful acoustic for that last, final chord, but the same acoustic seems to be a bit much for all the preceding chords - has difficulty finding enough breathing space ... your thoughts, if you please.

Absolutely spectacular Richard! I wish that one day you could visit us here in Australia!
Perhaps one day, the Lord will enable us to visit you too! My son and daughter cant wait to move to the UK. They just love pipe organs and English choral music. They keep asking. My son is a lone chorister as well, but cant find a single friend that loves singing anywhere here. Cultural wise, there is not much to choose from except mainly sport. We are glad to wait up to watch you live on youtube in the early hours of the morning, for virtual church.

We do have a very proud tradition of church music here in England, and it’s my favourite part of ‘church’. It’s why I’ve put together Virtual Church and Organ Compline - I love liturgical music and choosing music appropriate for the season/occasion. I can’t believe you stay up late to watch live - that’s incredible dedicated of you! Can I ask you to read one of the lessons and collects for an upcoming video?

Fine performance and just the right tempo for me.The sound from the pedals is just fantastic and seems to be in perfect balance with the keyboards. I haven't heard of Walker organs before, this instrument is marvellous, are there any more by this maker of this quality in Britain? Thanks to all involved in the production.

Amazing. I just love this organ. Walker has never disappointed. Also, the acoustics are amazing. I must say the acoustics are a little bit larger than Westminster Abbey.

The acoustics are nice, but not quite as generous as Westminster Abbey. The organ there is epic!!

It would be interesting to know the composition of the opening mixture. Sounds like a big six rank 15,19,22, 26, 29, 33??????

I think I had all the mixtures drawn on the Swell, Great and Nave:
      Main Organ: www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=N11434
      Nave Organ: www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=D07173
That makes it 12 through to 29!
