Why does Instagram Change the Color of My Picture?

  • Does transferring images from your computer or laptop to your phone change its color. Do the colors of your images or photos change while you upload them to Instagram? Sometimes, photos from your camera seem to lose their colors when transferred from one device to another. Colors go totally off and we go crazy adjusting the values to suit the device's configurations. In this video, we are going to learn not only what causes this problem but also how to solve it so that every time you upload images online, your colors are spot on correct and accurate.
We as photographers are super picky about colors, and when they seem off, we get terribly affected. This problem usually occurs when we transfer photos from our cameras to our computer and then to our smartphones. In most cases, camera photos show the wrong colors on a phone. Usually, we click a RAW image using our camera. Then, we transfer it to our computer and do a little bit editing on Photoshop and Lightroom. Then, when we export the image, the image seems to be all right on the laptop or the computer. But when you transfer the same image to your phone, the colors change drastically and they change even more when you upload them to Instagram.
All this happens due to format compatibility issues. To understand this, we need to first understand the concept of Color Space or Color Profile. What is Color Space? It is nothing but the range of colors available for a digital file. Every digital image file has been assigned a color space. It is important to note that some color spaces are larger than the other and there are no bad color spaces. In short, the images from your camera have color spaces much larger than that supported by your phones or other devices. Therefore, when you transfer your camera photos to your phones, there colors go totally off. It is because the representation of colors outside the range of the what your phone supports becomes difficult. Hence, the system gets confused and either shows you random colors or the closest color in the range of the ones supported by your phone or any other device.
So, what is the solution? The solution is to change the color space or the color profile right inside your computer in Photoshop and then transfer the photos to your phone. In this video, we will go in-depth about what exactly is color space or color profile, what are the common types of color profile that you might come across from day to day, what color profiles to use and what color spaces are best and for what purposes and when to convert an image from one color space to other.Keep in mind, don't get confused, "Color Space" is same as "Color Profile". They can be used interchangeably.

Dude thank you! I learned something incredibly important today with this video! Additionally, let me say that I absolutely laughed when you just took the break looking at the screen "How's life? The problem is far more complicated than it. Now, what he says in the video is very useful and improves the situation but it will not solve the problem.
    1) You shouldn't be using a profile that matches your screen (even when you post on instagram) because it will look good on your screen but not necessarily on others'.
    2) Monitors and screens sadly support customized colour spaces and even the theoretical most standard space, sRGB, will not look the same on any monitor.
    3) Be aware that even though proPhoto gives you "more space" for editing, what you see when you edit is not what you'll get in the end when you export in sRGB (assuming you want to use your photos for the web of instagram) so editing may become a very cumbersome task with a lot of guessing and "edit and hope" (remember, you can't rely on a single monitor to see the final effect because every screen will look different) and it may not be worth it.
Just accept that your photos will look different on different platforms and try not to think about it.

It is instructive to note that, with modern graphics drivers,
out-of-gamut colors from a wider color space can be passed
through a fixed LUT before being passed to the display.
With older systems, as well as many newer low-end systems,
this is impossible, so out-of-gamut color values are simply
clipped or re-mapped. It's a fair compromise to compressing
all the RGB values, which oversaturates the image, rather
    than truncating the values.
Another thin to realize is that color spaces and profiles really
are two different things. A profile consists of metadata which
is to be interpreted by the targeted output device, while a
color space is the actual gamut in which device operates,
whether that device is hardware or software. Photoshop, when
configured properly, can convert color values on-the-fly to
the monitor, while preserving the original values. It "assigns"
the profile, behind the scenes, then sends it to the display.
Fortunately, later versions of Photoshop are much easier to
configure than older versions, especially as far as color
preferences go. But it still can be a nightmare to the
    uninitiated.
It is also instructive to note that whenever you ask Photoshop
to convert profile, this process is destructive, as it literally
changes the pixel values in the image. So, unless you save
the image before converting, it is better to assign profile
instead. Assigning a profile only changes the metadata (tag)
in the image file, which then instructs a device to pass the
current pixel values through a LUT before rendering the image.
A device can be either hardware or software, BTW.

The default colour space for jpeg exports from Lightroom is sRGB and, furthermore, when I checked the 'working space' in Photoshop - as you suggested in this video - that also has sRGB as the default setting, yet Instagram still wrecked the colour of the few photos that I uploaded.
I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos and have learned lots from them but your solution to the 'Instagram ruins my colours' problem doesn't work, all my photos are saved as sRGB by default and Instagram still ruined them.
I thought that maybe this would convince me to create another Instagram account but no...been there, done that, deleted the account and won't be creating another. Instagram is an abomination that should be given a wide berth by anyone who cares about their photographs!

    A lot bad information here.
All colour spaces have the same amount of individual colours. It is only the gamut that changes.
The colour bit rate and gamut are representations of the colour potential, not the actual colour range.
The human eye (depending on how good it is) can only see X value of colours. Anything above that becomes gamut crushed, or appears either as white or red. (E.g flowers, some flowers appear white, but they sit so high in the ultra violet spectrum that humans just see them as white.)
The big reason why Srgb was created was to have a colour space and bit rate that relates to the human eye to be able to see definitively.
Argb was develop for graphic artists to choose individual colours without concerning themselves with tonal range.
CMYK is a printing formula that allows printers to use subtraction colour creation so the printers don't need to keep 16.7 million individual colours, each in their own nozzle.
prophoto/Argb don't have more colours than Srgb, they have a potential larger gamut (which they rarely use) that even if they did, it would spread the finite colour pallette that the human eye can see so far that its gamut would crush to the human eye.
This myth some colour spaces have more colours needs to stop. That image of colour spaces over the spectral locus is false. It only shows potential gamuts, not the actual gamuts.
    The easiest example is:
The human eye has the potential to see an object moving at X speed.
If I throw an object at a human at X speed, it doesn't mean it will be seen, there is just the potential they might.
If I throw it slower than X speed, they will see it.
If I throw it faster than X speed, they won't see it all.
So far in colour science we can create trillions of colours. However the vast majority of colour scientists agree that the human eye can see approximately 10 million. All the trillions are still made up of the same RGB bases, tone curves and gamma curves but many of them that are only separated by 0.1% difference the human eye will as the same colour.
Essentially forget how big a potential gamut can be, and just stick with a gamut the human eye can see.
