    Hi, i live in the U.P. of Mi.and i love it here. If i were you, id never be able to leave and go back! The winters are brutal -30° and 4 feet of snow. Go ice fishing and snowmobiling i guess. Im 61 now and cant take the cold like i used to, but still love it here. No crime, no hustle and bustle = perfect! revved up

    Memories of deer camp are wonderful to have. I didn't grow up in a deer hunting family, but got into it on my own. Many happy memories with my kids and friends. Don't shoot deer much anymore, but still go out with family every year. Mainly I became the cook and butcher helper. Thanks for sharing this video of your family memories.

    I keep seeing videos of deer camps and I am amazed at how they differ from the deer camp I hunted in back in the 60's. It was built on the site of an old homestead where nothing remained but the stone fireplace. The deer camp was built around that fireplace and it was the only heat for the camp. It also served as a place to cook meals, but some of the hunters did use an old pump up Coleman stove. Light was provided by pump up Coleman lantern or candles. The beds were all bunk beds made of rough cut lumber and covered with a thin mattresses like one used in military boot camp. There were enough sleeping accommodations for 10 people. No electricity, no indoor plumbing, and no insulation in the walls. IT WAS FANTASTIC!!!

      Snicks camp was like that when I first went there in 1979 and for the most part is still rustic-like today. Our camp Birchview started out as a lean-to and a small travel trailer. By the time I got to our camp in 2004 for deer season Mom and Dad had already built the second half of the cabin replacing the travel trailer, built the barn, put in propane gas & a generator and indoor plumbing. In 2011 my brother David and I stayed at Snicks cabin because we had a camp full at our Birchview cabin.. All of the time spent at deer camp are some of my fondest memories.

    Had to "live the dream" deer hunting here in Texas this year but I did make it up to the U.P. in October 2012. The fall color in that part of the country is second to none and it was peaking when we were there in 2012.

    I could not agree more with Michigan man about deer hunting in the UP.. If we can find any smoked fish that late in the season it's one of my favorite treats along with maple syrup and candies... My mom makes her own pasties but we have always called them pot pies.. Being able to share this with friends and family is the gift that keeps on giving..

    I'm a michigan man that now lives in houston. Last year was the first year I missed deer season at our camp in lewiston michigan. Its been in our family since the 50s and has been updated and added on to over the years. This is what deer hunting is all about. Shooting a deer is nice but being surrounded by friends and family is always better. We play alot of euchre to pass the time and well drink. I'm suprised you didn't eat any pasties.

  • @FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure
    @FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @JacobHanna13 Most of the bucks have small horns but the body size is tremendous. I think the deer in that part of the country dress-out on average at about 150 lbs so live weight is nearing 200 lbs!. The big buck I shot in 1979 dressed out at 187 lbs and that was after hanging in camp for nearly a week.. In all the years since I've not seen any one take a bigger buck.. and yes it was probably beginners luck but I was very prepared and determined back then..

    • @tlars8569
      @tlars8569 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome video! Just curious, did you ever score them antlers from that buck you shot in the late 70's in the Yoop? Some monsters shot back than.

  • @FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure
    @FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @JacobHanna13 No I didn't but we had two bucks on the pole, a nice six point on the second morning and a spike on Friday am before they all left camp for the year. I did shoot a nice Texas 8 point in late November. see my other videos for proof..

      @@FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure Yes this is what I am finding out. It looks like an igloo. However, I can always find ways to warm up to cool off there, but here there is nothing I can do even if I wear light clothes. I had a heat stroke working in the garden this year. What did it for me is when I saw a rabbit so skinny and dehydrated. Then I thought how can I ever feed myself when he himself can barely stay alive?

My Folks retired and became Michigan snowbirds for almost thirty years so all of our vacation times were spent in Michigan.
