@@elry6030 The problem in the past wasn't range, as in the hindsight, the company has to shell out extra money for fuel because they can't connect the places on close to a straight line. Not to mention that long haul flights not that beneficial to the company, (because after a certain fuel threshold, the returns are negative.)

I suspect that one of the conditions for Russia to reconnect its economy to the West after its collapse will be a large reduction in the overflight fees, and a relaxation of who can overfly Siberia.
My mother is a former Iberia cabin crew and she was destined to live in Anchorage for two years to cover the routes from Madrid to Tokyo via Alaska. Airlines were paying a lot of money for those going to live abroad! Thanks to that, my mum could afford to pay almost cash down for the house we're living in nowadays!

Took the flight from Chicago to Beijing. Truly exciting to see the northern Canadian islands, the North Pole, all of Siberia. And while I stayed glued to the window everyone else slept, read and watched movies. Their loss. It was weird to leave at night, see the day over the ice cap, switch hemispheres and land in darkness again.

A historical sidenote regarding the Finnair route (at 4:00): the reason Finnair flew the long way round in 1983 was not because of the Soviets, but the Japanese. The Finns actually had permission to use Soviet airspace, but the Japanese wouldn't have given permission to land in Tokyo if Finnair flew the direct route. Apparently this was a move to protect Japan's flag carrier airline JAL's own European routes.

4 years later, Siberian airspace will be exclusively limited to the Mainland Chinese airlines since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but no more for Hong Kong, South Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese carriers whose they still have European destinations, because they just imposed a huge ban on the Russian travel.

Then Alaska would be an independant culturaly russian country. There where independence movements in the colony and the russian Empire sold alaska because of it. Alaska wasn't worth it, back then the Gold and oil reserves where not known of. They wouldn't enrole the army to a rebellious colony which didn't even have ports which don't freeze over in the winter. If they would have tried to keep alaska under their reign, alyeska would have revolted in the winter and the russians could have never reinforced or enrolled the army until alyeska would have been possible to declare itself independant.

Nearly all countries charge overflight fees, they're just usually not as selective as Russia. And two more things: first, they often block planes from unfriendly countries - no Israeli planes can overfly most Arab countries and vice versa, for example, Qatari planes are banned from several other Arab countries, and no planes from Taiwan can overfly mainland China (there is an exception for direct flights to mainland Chinese airports, which are limited). And there are many other examples.
Second, the U.S. controls air traffic in vast areas of oceanic airspace, even in international waters and some other countries' airspace (e.g., Micronesia, which controls a huge area of the Pacific Ocean) - and it charges for overflights not only of its own territory, but for overflying air traffic CONTROLLED areas. So, a flight from Japan to New Zealand, or from the UK to the Bahamas, must pay U.S. overflight fees, even though it doesn't overfly American territory or territorial waters. This is even worse than the Russian fees in many cases.

Railways and pipelines cross the country on the ground, dividing it into pieces. This requires control and maintenance costs, while air space is basically free and belongs to everybody. So spare me your preaching and get the difference yourself.

I've had stopovers at the Anchorage airport twice. Once we all stayed on the plane for refueling. The other time we were able to get off. I remember seeing the cleaning crew waiting to get on the plane. It was about 2 in the morning and they all looked miserable. Who can blame them? You have to clean a dirty plane, it's the middle of the night and you're in Alaska.

@@hanj31 Yeah not really. We still have a summer, it gets to the 80s and 90s. Also Anchorage is relatively a pretty warm Alaskan "city" when compared to places like Fairbanks. It also definitely gets more than a flight every couple days. It gets multiple flights a day usually to other airports in Alaska, Canada, and a good number of the states bordering Canada.

This is probably my favorite video on this channel. My mom and dad also enjoyed it. Having lived in Anchorage in the late 60s and 70s they remember the days when the city was such an international hub. They also saw the meeting between President Nixon and Japanese Emperor Hirohito there.
Look at the airspace problems of Israel. Mostly Surrounded by hostlile countries, planes going in and out of Israel have to take strange routes. Could make an interesting video!

This video also unintentionally explains why Russia is such an important part of China's Belt and Road Initiative. Road and rail infrastructure across Siberia and European Russia is crucial to promoting land trade between Europe and East Asia.
Bit of a late reply. While Russia is an important partner for China's BRI, most of the railways and other connectivity infrastructure don't take place in Russia itself, but in the former Soviet Republics.
China doesn't trust Russia, as Russian authorities are notorious for attacking and closing Chinese businesses. That's why the routes mostly go through Kazakhstan. China even built railways in Turkey and Syria just to avoid Russia as much as possible.
However, Russia's influence over the former Soviet republics is immense, and Putin's approval is required to actually get those countries on board. Thus, while most of the projects don't take place in Russia, the Kremlin is unfortunately a poison China has to risk.
@@Dragones15 Russia had closed Chinese businesses in Moscow before. That said, I'm very skeptical of the whole "China doesn't care about its citizens" narrative our gongzhi (it's a negative term) propagate. When in Russia, follow Russian laws, after all.

well this was a very intresting video, but i have to correct you on one thing, there's a pretty new airline, Air Belgium. They officially classes as a low cost carrier and it flies from brussels south to Hong Kong. They recently got their permission to fly over russia, and im pretty sure that there are now 2 airlines in belgium that fly over Russia, Air Belgium and Brussels airlines. Great video :D
Not only Belgium! Likewise for Japan (ANA, JAL), South Korea (Asiana, Korean), Taiwan (EVA, China Airlines) and China (Hainan, Air China, China East, China Southern) all fly through Russian airspace to Europe.

I used to work at ANC. For international passenger flights, it's virtually dead in the North (international) terminal. Cargo flights are another story. ANC was the 3rd busiest cargo hub in the world when I worked there, not sure about today, but I know it's still super busy.

Some flights will return, but aviation has changed since then. Planes can fly longer distances now, maintaining the lack of need for a stop at Anchorage.
That moment when Wendover shows a place youve been. I worked in the international terminal at Ted Steven in Anchorage. The airport now specializes in cargo aircraft, with only limited pax flights.

With the Russian-Ukrainian war now and the British being banned from flying over Russia, Anchorage is gradually going to become more busy with passengers again if the ongoing conflict continues to worsen relations between Europe and Russia.
That was due to the lack of range though. Most planes these days don't need that stopover even if avoiding Russia. Also ICN is sort of playing the role of ANC right now due to Chinese COVID restrictions. Without COVID restrictions EWR-HKG by united and DFW-HKG by american will probably need a legitimate stopover due to range
@@maxxiong That is true and I can see some airlines doing that but in Wendovers' video about 20 hour flights and cargo airlines it is cheaper to stopover in Anchorage in the long run.
@@maxxiong A lot of cargo planes are older and smaller, so they don't have the same range as the newer premiere passenger jetliners. Anchorage will serve as a nexus for cargo flights until Russian airspace is open again.
@@mdstate829 For cargo it depends on how much payload is being carried actually. I found 5Y785 on FR24, which sometimes flies MIA-ICN-HKG, and the first leg takes nearly 17 hours partially due to having to route around Russia. This has to be at a pretty low load, because boeing's stated range at max load is somewhere around 10-11 hours.

Most Western airlines did fly Trans-Siberian from Europe to Asia, although it was nowhere near the most popular route, as it requires a stopover at Moscow, and airlines could only use 707s and DC-8s. KLM at one time did a joint venture with Aeroflot to fly the Europe-Japan route, using leased Soviet IL-62 airliners, and Japan Airlines had a similar arrangement. For international students during the Cold War the cheapest way to fly Europe-Japan is usually Aeroflot.

I work for norwegian airlines and believe me, we had plans to fly to Japan, Hong Kong and more, but Russia has stopped us in every single way. Very frustrating indeed but now we’re expanding more to Africa, Brazil and hopefully soon the Caribbean. Until then SAS and Russia have the routes.

Anchorage definitely gets multiple flights a day. It's Alaska's main international airport and during the summer, thousands of people from all over the world come to visit. Even in the winter when tourism is significantly decreased, there will still be flights to other places in Alaska, Canada, and a couple in the lower 48, usually Seattle.

This explains sooo much! I always wondered why there are no budget airline flights to East Asia, why flights there are so expensive and how airlines that offer a more southern connection to Asia (i.e: Qatar, Emirates, Air India) can still be competitive with the European or East Asian carriers.
