Rowan is deservedly labelled a genius. IIRC this was done to a recorded track and it took a lot of hard work memorising all the timing. Unless he has picked up the skill later in life he doesn't know how to play the drums. He just watched and then practised for the sketch.
Rowan Atkinson will always be Edmund Blackadder to me, an absolute British comedy landmark series. I seriously recommend you all watch 'Blackadder' series 1-4.
