Living in the north of Scotland day-length is important and sets my seasons, so I look on Spring as being the 45 days either side of the spring equinox - roughly 5th Feb to 5th May. With day-length being on a sinusoidal curve that period is when days are rapidly and noticeably lengthening. The sparrows around my house start to check out the nesting boxes in the first week of Feb, too, so that shows I'm not alone in turning my thoughts to spring at that point! It also makes sense in terms of summer starting in early May, as that is often the driest weather here.
I like to use the equinoxes and solstices to compartmentalise my seasons. I always mark them in my diaries and the daily weather forecasts too - I am a bit nerdy 🙂
For the me the start of Spring is when the first snow drops come out and the air smells of green rather than rot. Somewhere around the 2nd week of January 🤪. We're well on our way to Summer now in my book!
The transitions don't really have boundaries. The Spring quarter has at least three 'beginnings': February 1st (Irish Oimelg etc); March 1st (meteorological); and Mach 20/21st ( astronomical). For me , February marks a change with lengthening days, first blooms etc and is my beginning of Spring.
The first of March is the start of Spring for us - glad to see the back of Winter. As for rainfall - here in South Norfolk we could do with a couple of months of dry weather - the dykes and rivers are full to the brim. Love these deep dives - they are so informative!
Since moving to a rural area I've really noticed the changes in natural daylight more, so I now see the seasons most in terms of day length, and so spring started for me on the cross-quarter day, February 6th, the mid-point between the solstice and equinox. This means that winter was the darkest three months, and summer will be the brightest three months, and the solstices and equinoxes are in the middle of each season. That said, with the potential for wintry weather extending into November and March, and also the chances of fine summery weather in May and September, I quite like the idea of unequal length seasons, with a five-month summer, from May-September, and a five month winter, from November-March, and then short spring/autumn in April and October. I did see one interesting definition which had five seasons, based on the circulation patterns, but that sometimes seems to have two summer seasons, or two winter seasons, depending on how they're named.
For me spring starts on the first of April because iv seen snow coming in from the east around late march 2013 do remember we had some unusually cold easterlys then in Edinburgh and all so 5th 6th and 7th April 2021 we had snow aswell from the north
Fantastic deep dive, about time we bring back the National Rivers Authority so that all the waterways, especially the smaller ones (ditches/dikes round farm fields etc) on private land can be maintained correctly to help with all this extra rain run off.
Thank you lad. This ought to replace the tripe that most people are watching, we should have a deep dive every week on mainstream TV perhaps people wouldn't get so worried about sensationalised headlines. You certainly help me plan my working week.
I tend to associate spring with the arrival of early spring flowers primrose, violet and celandine, tree buds and blossom, the reawakening of the large bumblebees attracted to drifts of blackthorn on a sunny mild day, the heightened activity of garden birds. For me early spring is a movable feast, it can be held back when winters are more severe or pushed forward as it is this year. Spring time then moves into full swing by the equinox and just keeps giving thereon after!
I'm always pleased to see the solar/Celtic spring on 1st Feb, but I don't cast a clout, so to speak, until the May flowers appear usually in April here in Wirral. It's almost as though someone throws a celestial switch at the beginning of April, it gets warmer and nature bursts into life.
Thanks Alex - very detailed and helpful deep dive.. just circling back on your query.. for me Spring starts with the Equinox. while like many other commenters I’ll be glad to see the back of winter ….as a gardener there seems a better link between astronomical season change than meteorological season change. I.e. there are some seeds I would start planting after the longest day as they respond better to decreasing light
I think spring starts in the second or third week of march, when there is little to no chance of a hard frost and the days quickly warm up with the sun and longer days. However I'm convinced we are heading for a warmer that usual summer this year. I'd suggest that we will see regular 30c in the south.
Spring starts for me in two ways. Crocuse flowers sprouting shows the start of spring and winter starting to fade and when days are more sunny pleasant than not tells me spring is in full swing
Hey, first time I'm watching a deep dive! I particularly liked seeing the different percentage odds for the different weather conditions for March and Spring as a whole!
You can find more info here: www.metoffice.gov.uk/binaries/content/assets/metofficegovuk/pdf/business/public-sector/civil-contingency/3moutlook_mam-v1.pdf
Since being influenced by yourselves, I tend to regard the 1st being the first day of spring, rather than waiting for the astronomical date.Certainly, despite the colder temperatures, it has felt like spring these past few days in the brightness of the sun..Many thanks for another enjoyable Deep Dive.Fascinating as always.Thank you.,Alex.
Spring starts March 1st here. We already see stuff growing and the sunshine, when we occasionally catch a glimpse of it, is starting to feel warmer. Additionally by the time you get June 1st summer has definitely arrived so yeah, Spring is March, April and May.
I've got a feeling that some cold weather may be on the horizon we all know what the weather is like in the UK we can get snow up to April? Were there is a ssw might help the colder weather developments thats wishful thinking of course 😂
Really enjoy these deep dives! I like to notice Spring early when the snowdrops arrive, so for me it's February 1st, the eqinox in the middle of the season rarher than the start makes more sense to me too. I'm interested in how the polar vortex is behaving re. sudden stratospheric warming events and the effect on surface weather. Thank you! 🙏
Thanks Alex. Great work on the graphics. Spring pointers for me are more physical - the sight of blossom on Blackthorn in the hedgerows which seemed very early this year (in west Dorset) or the first time I feel warmth of the sun on my face, which sadly I have yet to experience.
Many thanks indeed Alex, for an extremely interesting Deep Dive! Firstly, I do hope that the parts of the Mediterranean, where they’ve already experienced 2 storms in the last couple of days, won’t be too badly affected by Dorothy and her mate (can’t remember the name). Fingers🤞that all humans as well as animals stay very safe! We were always taught at school that the first of Spring was March 21st, the more interested I became in the weather I started hearing about March 1 st, so I’ll stick to my school days , but with the Meteorological March 1st - 2 springs in a month!😮 Many thanks and take care, all the Met Office too! 😊
From a very young age We always were taught that the 1st of February was the first day of spring two things 1) the daffodils were in full bloom 2) the birds began building their nests
Would love it if a regular part of these deep drives cover a brief idea of the weather across the continent, covering the main tourist spots I’m sure would be helpful to lots of people as well. Thanks for great info and regular output, will look forward to next week 😀
I always like to split the seasons into months so spring starts March 1st. I've found it a very mild and damp winter. Hoping for a nice spell of dry and warm spring.
For me, spring stars between February 8th to February 11th. That is becauae I can suddently feel the sun strengthen and for the first time all winter, I can actually feel the sun piercing on the back of my neck on a sunny day. I live near the coast in South Wales and ive felt that all my life. I worked out the date from noticing over many years.
A great presentation Alex, thanks. It's been such a GLOOMY winter! Any stats / info on sunshine hours for December, January & February? Last winter seemed to bring a lot of colder, sunnier weather (to the South, at least). It'd make an interesting point of comparison.....
I've never really understood why the astronomical seasons are taken to start on the equinoxes and solstices. Shouldn't the longest day be mid-summer and the Spring equinox be the middle of Spring? The start of Spring would then be about mid February. As it is, we have heat-absorbing oceans and atmosphere that cause the weather to lag behind the sun, but astronomy doesn't care about that.
In Guernsey we still often see severe winter storms blowing in from the Atlantic in March, we even had days of blizzard conditions from the east in 2013, so I wouldn't really consider winter to be over until at least the 2nd or 3rd week of March!
Silly thought has consumed me. At any quiet point in the UK when the jet stream is passing overhead, is it possible to hear it at all from ground level?
Dear Met office. I live in the north of Devon but yet your app never seems to get it right. It’s says it’s sunny yet it’s raining. Says it’s cloudy but yet it’s raining, says it’s snow.. yet it’s raining. Can you just change the icon to rain and be done with it?
Spring is march 1st. Bulbs out, early blossom too even in cooler Februarys. More significant the worst of winter may be in 1st 21days of December (eg. 2010), or best of summer last year in first 21days so use the 3 whole months. Also more optimistic at this stage of year!
HELLO EVERYONE IN THE MET OFFICE 😁😁😁👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 THANK YOU SO MUCH ALEX FOR THE DEEP DIVE A DEEP LOOK INTO THE EARLY DAYS OF MARCH 😁👍🏼 & SPRING STARTS ON THE 21ST OF MARCH 🌞🌞🌞
For me spring begins when some leaves start on trees and ends when they all have leaves (usually March - May, so 1 March to 31 May is about right). Autumn begins when trees start to lose leaves, and ends when they've all gone. (Again 1 September to 30 November is about it)
Alex, An excellent presentation. I enjoy every season the Uk offers, just live in the tropics to endure tedious weather. If I am pushed spring starts on 1 April but I have seen large snowfalls in April. Perhaps more coverage on the movement of the uk jetstream because it governs so much of present and future weather patterns. Regards, Neil
Another really enjoyable and informative deep dive - thank you! I really like the way that different presenters show different things. One small comment - the temperature against the monthly average seems a bit pointless as it changes dramatically at the beginning of a new month. Perhaps a rolling 30 day average would be better?
Why at around 11 minutes in do you plot the temperature differences against the average for that month as opposed to the average for that date +/- N days?
Summer is made up of two seasons (spring and summer) and summer is the period when the days are longer than the nights consequently spring starts at the equinox
Thanks for that look ahead. I plan on doing some outdoor filming in Newcastle, so am looking for a period of calm cloudless skies. A few brief windows here, but I shall wait for some more sustained high pressure. BTW Spring starts for me on the vernal equinox, 20th March.
Interesting video! Though I'm wondering: if you talk about the mean temperature of the UK in February (18th minute): how do you determine the mean temperature for such a large area? Or do you use a couple of WMO stations from every nation (count them up and divide by their number afterwards)? Nice that you also mention the unsettled weather over the Mediterranean Sea!
Hoping for something warm and sunny around my birthday (March 25th). Surely a month long dry spell is what we deserve after a washout July, October (2nd half), December and February
For the rainfall amount graph, how do you get the value of the accumulated total ? Do you take the average of some stations in the S England? Also, how does the climatology of 29 FEB calculated? Would you just compare this year FEB statistics to other leap years?

For the average yes it's just the leap years. the wettest february on record was 2020 (also a leap year) but worth noting the previous record was exceeded even before the 29th.
I can see there's a lot to remember when you mets do the deep dive and 10 day trend. You are getting better and better, I would say feeling more comfortable with the presentation and therefore easing towards a more informal style, which is great. Love the graphics too. Sadly I usually miss your live slot!
Thanks for the great Info Alex. I have noticed in the last year or so weather predictions are becoming more accurate and Technology evolving especially with A.I. look forward to the next one 👍😁
So with temps being markedly higher than average at the start of the week and markedly lower than average by the end of the week, are we saying that temperatures are pretty average for the time of year?
Hi, I have a question: I'd like to understand how the jet stream and AMOC/the gulf stream interact in affecting British weather. There has been talk recently of AMOC slowing down or stopping which they say will make the UK colder. But it seems to me the Jet stream is the single biggest influence on UK weather Temperatures. How do they influence each other?
Spring for me = 21 March. The weather where I live is too unpredictable between now and then.......An atrocious winter, far too wet and far too stormy to enjoy anything outdoors...... Really looking forward to Spring though.
Many thanks! Detailed and informative, and engagingly presented. Excellent graphics. Actually see the weather about to happen! When does Spring start, subjectively, for me? When daffodils and crocuses (etc) appear. Which cunningly lets it start at different times in different places, as required. The flowers know, y'know. Usually.
Curious to know what the weather is doing elsewhere around the world, any chance of a glimpse of what’s going on as we can see on globe behind you weather for other places.
eastern Scotland beside the sea, when does spring start? Despite some years of blocking high pressures spring doesn't properly start till after my birthday in mid April. March usually definitely winter and in April inland spring can be a week to 10 days more advanced
Just another greatly presented deep dive weather special. However next week I am hoping for some interesting weather related facets to be discussed. Just the likes as evaporative cooling or the leeward effect (already discussed in a great way).
I’d say, for me - spring starts at some point in late April, because you can still get colder weather in March and early April… or even mid-April. May tends to be the month where most of the time it seems to become quite pleasant.
Spring starts 1st March in my house. I’m not waiting any longer than necessary to see the back of winter 🤪
I agree!
100%
I agree as well winter was crazy this year!
I love these deep dives!! On the odd occasion, I do catch them live. Thanks to the Met office, especially behind the scenes meteorologists. 👍
Living in the north of Scotland day-length is important and sets my seasons, so I look on Spring as being the 45 days either side of the spring equinox - roughly 5th Feb to 5th May. It also makes sense in terms of summer starting in early May, as that is often the driest weather here.
As a paraglider pilot, spring starts when thermals get strong enough to support cross country flights of a few hours, generally mid March onwards.
Always worth having the Deep Dives for the in depth weather forecast
Glad you enjoy them

I would love to see a review of the forecast one week after, see how it turned out compared to the models one week out
Thank you, Alex
I’m exhausted. Too much information 🤯🤯🤯
Well done Alex!

Where can we get the raw data, please
SE has been wet & mild. Want some warm sunshine now. Thanks for the Deep Dive. I feel Spring starts at end March.
Thank's again much appreciated. Philip

Hi Alex, I've seen on facebook post about how the stratospheric polar vortex is going crazy and looks like it will carry on into April. Any comment?

I appreciate your work/efforts. Great work.
Thank you.
what if any effect does the el nino have on our weather in the spring/summer
El nino is waning (some suggest it has come to an end alread) so neutrality will return in spring
For me, spring stars between February 8th to February 11th. If the Daffodils are up, spring is here
So that was December 21st for me 😮
Thanks for the detailed look at the weather Alex
15:27 Love the biscuits too 😅
Hi Alex - for me spring starts on the day the sun reaches 25 degrees above the horizon at noon. Greetings from the Netherlands 🙂
A great presentation Alex, thanks. It's been such a GLOOMY winter! Any stats / info on sunshine hours for December, January & February? Last winter seemed to bring a lot of colder, sunnier weather (to the South, at least). It'd make an interesting point of comparison.....
I'm Sussex we only got 20 hours of sunshine the whole of December, it's been bleak!
Perfect 👍

Silly thought has consumed me. At any quiet point in the UK when the jet stream is passing overhead, is it possible to hear it at all from ground level?
2:25 Error:- Wednesday into "Tuesday"
Met Office etiquette:-
Avoid phrases like "trust me" ...,🤔
Love the 2 new charts.
Thank you Alex for the usual in-depth information, it's so well presented. You are doing an amazing job as always. 🎉
Dear Met office. I live in the north of Devon but yet your app never seems to get it right. It’s says it’s sunny yet it’s raining. Says it’s cloudy but yet it’s raining, says it’s snow.. yet it’s raining. Can you just change the icon to rain and be done with it?
1st March for me

I always think we are in spring when the daffodils start to flower

Spring begins around 22nd February. It's when the trees start pollinating and my hayfever starts.
Love the deep dives , Spring 1st March

When all the flowers start to come up
Yep for me somewhere between the first snowdrop and the first daffodil.
For me, spring starts n 21st March!😊

One small comment - the temperature against the monthly average seems a bit pointless as it changes dramatically at the beginning of a new month. Perhaps a rolling 30 day average would be better?

Thanks for that look ahead. I plan on doing some outdoor filming in Newcastle, so am looking for a period of calm cloudless skies. A few brief windows here, but I shall wait for some more sustained high pressure. BTW Spring starts for me on the vernal equinox, 20th March.
Interesting video! Though I'm wondering: if you talk about the mean temperature of the UK in February (18th minute): how do you determine the mean temperature for such a large area? Hoping for something warm and sunny around my birthday (March 25th). Surely a month long dry spell is what we deserve after a washout July, October (2nd half), December and February
For the rainfall amount graph, how do you get the value of the accumulated total ? Do you take the average of some stations in the S England?
Also, how does the climatology of 29 FEB calculated? Would you just compare this year FEB statistics to other leap years?
It's a little more complicated than averaging the the number of stations in the south. We take into account the fact that there are more stations in some areas than others. With regards to the 29 th of feb. For the average yes it's just the leap years. the wettest february on record was 2020 (also a leap year) but worth noting the previous record was exceeded even before the 29th.
Thanks very much well done!
I can see there's a lot to remember when you mets do the deep dive and 10 day trend. You are getting better and better, I would say feeling more comfortable with the presentation and therefore easing towards a more informal style, which is great. Love the graphics too. Thanks for the great Info Alex. I have noticed in the last year or so weather predictions are becoming more accurate and Technology evolving especially with A.I. look forward to the next one 👍😁
Any chance of getting a summer forecast ( i know it’s a long time away but anything would be appreciated )
So with temps being markedly higher than average at the start of the week and markedly lower than average by the end of the week, are we saying that temperatures are pretty average for the time of year?
First day of spring is 21st of March bar a leap year…. March 1st would be for city folk thinking spring imo. 😃
Very interesting ❤️❤️👈😀😀👍
In Scotland Spring starts in May if we're lucky. In some years we get a day of summer at the end of July then Autumn from August 😂
Is there any sunny Weather on the way.

It's still spring beginning of March Scotland is north so your springs are obviously colder😊
Spring starts for me whenever we get a run of sunny days and the ground starts to dry out.
..spring starts when the 1st leaves start appearing on the trees. I have buds starting to open now..
How are the rainfall totals calculated?
Just another greatly presented deep dive weather special.
However next week I am hoping for some interesting weather related facets to be discussed.
Just the likes as evaporative cooling or the leeward effect (already discussed in a great way).
I’d say, for me - spring starts at some point in late April, because you can still get colder weather in March and early April… or even mid-April. May tends to be the month where most of the time it seems to become quite pleasant.
Spring is bound to start cold as it's changing from winter but it's still spring😊
Is there a chance on Friday the snow could push down to lower levels of the uk
Yes, a lot of uncertainty about Friday, not expected but not impossible
@@metoffice thank you enjoy the rest of your day 😃
Maybe it could be “In like a lion out like a lamb” then🤞🏻thanks for the deep dive Alex 😊
