Don't worry about keyboard warriors. I enjoy watching you farm. And your a pretty good wrench to for doing this on your own and it's better than paying some shop to mess it up. You my as well do it your self.
You have to remember that truck is 50 years old it's lived a good long life hopefully you can get back to a good place without breaking the bank good luck to you
Chris, a couple of things you could try before taking the head off is to take out the injector on that cylinder and screw in a pressurized air line to hold the valve up. Then you can remove the valve spring without taking the head off. More than likely it is just a weak spring. If you have the head off, it is really easy to lap the valves with valve grinding compound and a lapping tool (most auto stores have them). Also, a leaking valve will also cause blow-by not just cylinders as during the compression stroke, the pressure passes by the valves and then returns to the crankcase through the oil return ports. Since you have it off, it wouldn't hurt to have it tanked to clean it and magnafluxed to check for cracks. I wouldn't keep a spare head around as they rarely go bad and it will probably end up rusting anyway. I really enjoy your videos, reminds me of my operation - dirt floor and repairing things.
I'm going to be the bad guy again..... I admire your willingness to learn.... You can't learn anything by tossing parts everywhere and not looking carefully at them..... That engine has a story to tell.... But you have to be willing to listen..... If your exhaust valves are that wore... Wouldn't that lead you to think maybe the rocker assembly could have excess wear from valves floating around.... They make contact to the valve...... You ran off to get parts before you knew what all you needed.... Once again .... Maybe don't worry about the video more than task at hand.... Can't wait to hear all the backlash to this comment...... It's constructive advise... Take it or leave it.
Missoururirob, you needed to add the slogan " haste makes waste". I have that feeling every time I watch his videos, most of the mistakes I made in life was from being too much in a hurry. I think we all witness Chris's mistakes are a result of the same thing.
@@richardstahlbusch1636 I would say some are self inflicted..... I sure remember plenty of lessons learned when starting out.... The trick is to be a quick learner.... That back head has been off before. The build up in that front head is what you see in high mileage engines. The frequency of oil changes and type/brand of oil contribute to that. It's not from exhaust leaking into the crankcase. Waiting to see what the machine shop says once they see the head. And BTW it only takes a teaspoon of antifreeze to kill a dog. I saw it happen in a friends shop. I was so mad at them for leaving it out for their dog to get into it. I always had a shop dog or two that had free run night and day. Never had a problem because I knew how to knew how to keep them safe.
Going with your instincts always best, hear a noise you don’t like hoping it fixes itself, we know how that goes. Tackling it like your doing is best. Great content, keep getting at it.
It does help to slow down take your time and think things through. That being said great job on how far you have came. In the last couple of years. Don't pay attention to all the negativity. They aren't in your situation. We all know keyboard mechanics can do anything better. Like you say you're learning everyday. I would suggest not forcing pry bars and screwdrivers on flat sealed surfaces like between the head and the block. That's my only concern. I would definitely invest in a chain hoist and rig a boom on your loader to put the hoist on. Would definitely save your back in future endeavors. Good luck Chris. Keep up the videos. I know the struggles of keeping older equipment rolling.
My man you're gonna warp a head one day loosening the bolts up in that sequence always do the front few then go to the back few and go back and forth like that 28:54
Getting there Chris one way or another, should think the other head isn't far behind. May have paid you to refresh that one at the same time as most of the bits are striped off that as well . 👍

I am so happy to see you succeed in repairing your girl's big red Mac semi-truck and giving it some love in the future are going to get it sandblasted and repaint it to what is going to be the farm colors so people know that it is Duffy agg. farm trucks would like to know. Chris cool idea for a 1/4 ton jib crane my grand father made for himself for when you go to put the heads back on and future projects. Weld a post to a 1/2 inch thick 3ft x 1ft plate and slide the plate under the front wheel and install the crane on the post.

You have to invest in magnetic trays they're really cheap at Harbor Freight and they're well worth it not only does it stick to metal but everything that you put in it that is metal sticks to it
When you said you needed a 7/16 12 point socket, an 11mm is almost exactly 7/16. Just to help. I know it’s tough running old stuff. But, once it’s fixed it’s better albeit less user friendly until the technology gets a mind of its own. And gives trouble.

A lot of it is just if you look at it and use common sense and the right information goes a long way. Keep up the great work. Don't let the people who view everything that it has to be done there way get to you
So in my professional opinion I would pull that engine and use the other engine while you build up money to rebuild the original and maybe hot rod it a little like maybe up it to 400 hp just a little power nothing crazy. I mean that engine came with many different hp ratings from 200 to 440 hp so why not save the original for now and build it later while utilizing the spare engine you have. That’s what makes sense to me. I know I know you just did all this work and just want to be done with it. I get it but the smart choice is to swap them in my opinion but then again you really don’t know the condition of the other engine. But seriously if you knew there was an issue that should have been the first thing you did before everything else. But hey it’s great content and I wish you the best of luck brother.
