I think its Elizabeth and Iain's acting and chemistry that really makes this one tick. Its the first time they get real focus, and not just the jokey side characters, and they absolutely crush it to make you actually feel for them.

That moment in the fire fighter station, Coulson spent the last moments with the man who was going to die. They couldn't help him, but by staying with him as long as he could, Coulson was giving comfort to him in his last moments. Letting him know that his life mattered. Every life matters. That is one of the central themes of the show.

I love the near-constant tonal shifts of this ep. And it all feels completely natural. Plus, Fitz's "You've been beside me the whole damn time!", followed by his sudden realisation of just how much Simmons actually means to him, just kills me - but in a "I love these characters and show" kind of way.

I like the idea of an alien virus being around and Fitz and Simmons are some of the best actors on this show imo this episode is the one that always hooks people I'd like to think lol and the scen with the firefighter guy too I also liked him and Coulson talking about dying and how sickly they made him look

“Would you please tell my father first…” was the moment Jemma became a ride-or-die character for me.
See, the trick of an ensemble show is that they fill the cast with a variety of characters hoping at least one will get their hooks in each viewer, thus making the show a must-watch for them.
Well, when it came to this viewer, who showed up for “Coulson” and Ming-Na Wen, Jemma was that character. So, well-played Agents of SHIELD producers and writers. Well-played.

  • @Jimmy_Jones

This was one of the many big hooks of the show for me. That and T.R.A.C.K.S (I know you have watched it already). It's amazing how there almost feels like two episodes in one in this episode.

I always find this episode very emotional and hard hitting. The stuff with simmons gets me but that scene in the fire station is actually my favorite. Its just coulson and that guy having a chat but it feels very human. Even if coulson can't save someone its nice to see him trying to give comfort and peace at the end

On rewatching this, I love how this is first taste of how brave and selfless Jemma is (I know you're way ahead, but even in T.R.A.C.K.S. she does it).
And I love Coulson yelling at Jemma and Ward at the end. It's such a classic stern Dad lecture coming from a place of caring for them.

Ming-Na Wen in real life is much more smiling, joking, and gregarious, but Melinda May is so reserved that she just has a lot to overcome to become relatable. Still, we already see how great of a character May is, where along with her physicality and "jump in and get it done" in various scenes, her final conversation with Coulson in this episode is very powerful.

    • @mydavegabicycle
      @mydavegabicycle ปีที่แล้ว

@@dondumitru7093she was the voice of Mulan too which is so crazy.
But yeah, she reminds me of Krysten Ritter (sp?) who plays Jessica Jones. Her character is such a badass, always pissed off, grumpy. But in real life, she's so bubbly and silly. Love watching her in interviews.
Ming-Na Wen is just the one you have to look out for for being inappropriate 🤣.

I adored FitzSimmons from the pilot, but I recognize that not everyone feels the same. I usually see that if people aren't attached to FitzSimmons from the pilot, this is where it starts lol.
But I mean how can you not? They're adorable.
Also I love the bus kids (nickname for Fitz, Jemma, and Skye) with all my heart. They are the "kids" in this family the team is forming despite them being in their 20s. Coulson and May are the parents and Ward is kind of like the other brother, especially with the line to Skye in this ep with being worried about not being able to protect them.
(although since I know you're way into season 2 in real time at this point, there are some more complicated feelings)

This is, for me, the first of many great episodes! Really a sign of the potential of the show. Iain, who plays Fitz, provides probably my favourite performance in the show overall and you can really see it in this episode, his screams for Jemma were haunting. Obviously brilliant performances all around though, Simmons asking Coulson to tell her dad first absolutely shattered my heart

"Fitz, its science I have to dissect something"
Those lines get me every time. Lots of foundational character building here. FItz, Simmons, Ward and Coulson. The first three willing to make one of the hardest choices to protect others. Coulson, is different. Blake knows and seemed concerned. Which is a bigger moment than you will realize.

As much as I love this episode…the science in this is highly unrealistic lol. During the pandemic, there were scientists all around the world helping to develop a vaccine for COVID. So I would say they were able to make the vaccine in a year or so, if I’m not mistaken. It involves a lot of genome analysis, analysis of the proteins and epitopes, and many clinical trials/time for FDA approval. (I don’t mean to be so analytical, but I am also a scientist 😅)
However, I AM glad we had marvel science magic here (and maybe also Jemma’s genius brain) because otherwise, Jemma would’ve died 😢
