- Memory palace: what it is and how to use the method of loci to learn languages and to memorize anything: Sherlock Holmes' mind palace technique explained.
Also known as the Cicero's method of loci (or mind palace), the memory palace is one of the most widely used memorization techniques dating back to ancient Greece and has been used for millennia as a technique for memorizing things.
In today's video I talk about this memory technique and explain it in detail. As usual I will make some reference to foreign languages but the memory palace technique can be used in any field and context.
At the end I will also provide an example of how I personally use the method of loci for shopping.

This is a wonderful, almost scientific video on memory and neurology. But also it touches on language learning. Simone speaks at a normal, neutral speed, and because it is Italian, you can easily accelerate or decelerate that speed with TH-cam. (You cannot do that with, for example, French.) I listened to this video at 85 pct speed. It was very comprehensible. But it was also full of history and science, so therefore with Simone you use your time well. He is no waste of time. He is such a humanist. Our modern Renaissance Man. Kudos and thank you, Simone. I see you have dozens of Podcasts (I have listened to only 3 so far) and I must now conquer all of them. By the way, I hope you can take some of you videos and simply make Podcasts out of them. This one in particular is good example. I listen to your Podcasts when I am on my bike! I love them. You are so peaceful, so pleasant. Thanks Roy :) as I shortly mentioned in the video I don't actually use this technique to learn languages and I don't recommend it. I use this to keep my memory fit, which indeed helps when it comes to language learning :)

Does this method REALLY work for remembering long passages of text? How many mental images in the Palazzo do you need if you want to remember a whole page of text? I enjoyed your video but I am very sceptical! (How do actors remember long speeches?)
Hey Robert,
At the early stages of my experimentation with this method I tried to use it to learn a random book's chapter by heart but that took me ages.. although I have to say that back then I was also new to this technique so I probably overdid it a bit (you should definitely start with smt easier if you want to give it a try).
You also got to tweak the method a bit in that case. For example you could create a sort of "power point presentation" where every page of the book is a slide of the presentation with a main character performing certain actions (things you want to remember) and use logical connectors between rooms. It requires a lot of training but practice makes perfect...they say :D :D
Regarding actors.. that's a very good question! I have no idea :D ...honestly I was wondering about that the other day... I might investigate the matter :P

Ciao Sylvain! Ci sono metodi più specifici per le lingue, come spiegato nel video io uso la tecnica dei loci per imparare le lingue in modo indiretto. Magari faccio uno dei prossimi video dove spiego come applicare queste strategie alle lingue ;) uno dei metodi migliori però secondo me rimane lo shadowing perché impari in contesto th-cam.com/video/dtFN_gYvWlY/w-d-xo.html

Trovo difficile pero´ trovarci un uso pratico nella memorizzazione di lingue straniere.
Come hai proposto tu, funziona bene per imparare delle liste di oggetti, creando delle immagini visive..quindi buono per cose come la lista della spesa, numeri, etc.
Ma non vedo in realta´ un uso pratico nell´apprendimento di una lingua. Che ne pensi?

C'è chi lo usa per memorizzarsi i casi grammaticali, ad esempio nelle lingue slave che ne hanno tanti, ma a mio parere non è un approccio così efficiente.
Concordo con te quindi, è un buon esercizio per mantenere il muscolo della memoria allenato in generale, ma non lo userei in modo diretto per l'apprendimento delle lingue :)

Caro Simone, nel titolo scrivi che il metodo è per le lingue, tuttavia non ho ben chiaro dove parli di una tecnica per imparare le lingue. Cosa mi sono perso?
Il Palazzo della Memoria è una tecnica ideale per imparare nuove lingue🤗
il problema non è quello di creare il Palazzo ma di associare le informazioni che si vogliono ritenere ai luoghi del Palazzo. Notoriamente M Ricci usava delle immagini ma il sistema in questo modo diventa estremamente macchinoso.
Conosco il tedesco che ho dimenticato completamente...Posso sfruttare e come il palazzo della memoria per non dimenticare tutto quello che ho studiato un po' di tempo addietro. Grazie.
