In this video, we're comparing every version of Ultimate Spider Man, which was released on: Playstation 2, GameCube, Xbox, PC, Mac, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance and Mobile
My friend John Hall worked on this game, and we had some very detailed discussions about the PS2 vs GameCube vs Xbox (NVidia) fixed-function shaders. He much preferred the PS2 hardware shaders, as their clamping worked better for the overall cel-shaded look. He sadly died at a very young age, but his early work in the open-source SDL library lives on. Treyarch’s game after this one had a dedication to him in the credits.
My favourite thing about this game is the first person you consume as Venom isn't just some random little kid, it's a little kid who's lost his balloon - calling back to the hated sidequest in Spider-Man 2 The Game.
Things to clarify: 1. The whisper "Spider-Man" in the Java is from Spider-Man 2 movie where Tobey says "I'm Spider-Man no more." 2. There was supposed to be a sequel, but it was canceled. The closest we got was a followup titled "Spider-Man: Battle for New York" for Nintendo DS and GameBoy Advanced. It loosely follows the same story from the Ultimate universe and you get to play as both Spider-Man and Green Goblin. There are voices in the DS version and The Avengers make an appearance.
@@brandonkirkendall1466 That would be really short compared to games that feature console versions. Although, I am looking forward to other Spider-Man games: Friend or Foe, Web of Shadows, Shattered Dimensions, Edge of Time, TASM1 and 2. There are differences. FoF has playable Electro and Carnage in PSP. WoS has costume select on Wii, while PS2 and PSP feature Amazing Allies Edition which is watered down. As well as NDS with Green Goblin. Shattered Dimensions on NDS only has 3 Spider-Men that removes Ultimate and Josh Keaton voices Amazing instead. EoT on NDS has different boss battles and has Anti-Venom combined with Rhino instead of Doc Ock. It was meant to be ported onto PC, but it was canceled. TASM1 has Wii port that features no open world, but WiiU and PSVita does have that feature. TASM2 has a Java version of the game that features Gwen Stacy surviving the ending.
Battle for NY is a prequel based on what comics the game was adapting and in the game cutscenes Peter in the start acts like he never met goblin before as opposed to Ultimate where he knows him well. Plus the Avengers in the Ultimate universe are called The Ultimates.
I absolutely love the artstyle of Ultimate Spider-Man on the PS2. With a higher resolution and cleaning some textures, the game visually still holds up.
I feel that it has certain elements that were better such as the ability to play as Venom and also the ability to climb the web strands (which sadly has not been seen again.) I still do prefer Spider-Man 2 over this but it's definitely close.
@@jurassicmat9793 that's interesting I didn't know that which is funny because I actually played that game all the way through a couple of times. I guess I just forgot. Lol
I was literally thinking yesterday “man it’s wild Flandrew hasn’t done a comparison video for Ultimate Spiderman” and here we are. I played the Xbox version at a friends and had the GBA version myself, lot of good memories there.
My favourite of the three spiderman games I played on pc as a kid. The ability to free roam and web sling from the actual buildings was killer, compared to foggy new york in the 1999 pc game and the floating webhook points in spiderman 2 PC. I remember playing on an iGPU without pixel shader, which made venom's tentacles rainbow colored instead of purple.
Ultimate Spider-Man really is a classic comic book style video game. It's incredible that they brought Brian Michael Bendis to be the writer for this game. Wish they make Spider-Man games, with style like this.
To me, the console version of Ultimate took the best aspects of Spider-Man 2 and perfected it. I find myself going back to this game more than the other. I also had the GBA version growing up. For the Venom levels, I would often spam feeding on enemies because I thought it was fun.
I remember playing it on my mom's PC when I was like 5-6 years old and I also remember that this game was extremely difficult. I got stuck on the level where you need to fight Electro as Venom while protecting Spider-Man. So at some point I dropped the story entirely and just enjoyed swinging around the city.
To be honest I always thought the DS game Spider-man: Battle For New York was a prequel game that only released for a handheld console due to a low budget or something
1:33 this is why I wasn't surprised that they expanded the map in SM 2, I was just waiting for it to happen because they could do it in 2005 but needed that much time for doing it again.
You can actually kill on the main console Game, if you knock someone off a building the skull icon shows above their head like when you kill enemies as venom so you don't need to web them, because they're dead
You know I always hated how the later Ultimate Spider-Man issues not only retconed this entire game but also kinda made a worst version of it later and did nothing with the fact that this game is now it’s own separate Ultimate Universe or alternate timeline or whatever this game is now. In fact if Marvel wanted tho bring back Ultimate Peter or the Ultimate Universe as a whole they could have used the game version. I mean this game was originally canon so the history would likely be exactly the same up until a certain point. Not to mention the fact that they could have used said retcon to bring back Ultimate Eddie Brock since in a later issue the Beetle just takes him away and we NEVER see him again
I think the strangest scenario here for me was playing the game before finding out about the comic which it was adapted from. Venom just...dissappears? What? Well, I'm glad he got to have a conclusion here.
My favorite PS2 Spidey game, I still replay it once a year to this day. If only it could be remastered, because it's honestly probably in the top 3 of Spider-Man games. You forgot to mention the PS2 exclusive Limited Edition that has bonus videos and extra concept art.
For Ps2 they have other copy that is Limited Edition with a sign from Stan Lee alongside the art and creator for Ultimate Spiderman Comic in the cover. They even add a free comic of Venom Story Arc to help someone who hasn't rad the comic, and there's a bonus video tell behind the scene of making the game. Also the Mechanic for Venom gameplay for DS version, the bring that mechanic again for Iron Man 2 on NDS for War Machine level.
You needed to finish the year on a high note, of course you needed you. Man I do hope this game gets a little remaster... But I doubt'll happen. If I am to recommend a video, that'd a comparing between all the versions of Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. That'd be great. Happy New Years, Flandrew!
Now that I've watched this video, I kind of want to see the console version of Ultimate Spider-Man get an HD remaster. The cel-shaded comic book-esque artstyle still looks good today, and I feel like this is what an animated Spider-Man movie should sort of look like (look, I know a lot of people love the Spider-Verse movies, but I watched the first one and I just couldn't get into it). Kind of a shame for me as a PlayStation guy that it would probably end up being an Xbox-exclusive due to Activision now being part of Microsoft.
I heard there was gonna be a sequel to this game that would have involved the Green Goblin and we would have been explored Coney Island. However Spider man Battle for New York released after this game so I wonder was Battle for New York supposed to be a handheld version of that canceled sequel?
I love how you could just find shocker and the ringer randomly throughout the world and beat them up, as in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics they were constantly the but of the joker,
I think at this point you are just reading my mind when it comes to finding games for you to review. This Was my absolute favourite when it came out. And I still play it to this day. Keep it coming!
My bootleg copy had a game breaking bug where the game would freeze on the first level of playing as Venom. Little I knew that this can be fixed by switching the game to another language.
I played both the GBA and PS2 versions. I thought the GBA version was fine for a GBA game. It gave me spoilers for the PS2 version but when I did play the PS2 version a couple years later, I was completely blown away by how good it was.
I can't believe you didn't point out that the balloon kid from Spider-Man 2 came back for you to consume. He even shouts "my balloon!" when he spawns in.
Yo my favorite Spidey game ever! Had it for GameCube back in the day. Ended up getting the GBA version recently and enjoying that one too! Love your content!
In the 3d version, you can actually k word people, occasionally you'll have to fight against people on rooftops and you can throw the enemies down the rooftops causing them to die. They lose all health and don't need to be webbed up after falling either
the cartoonish / comic art style they went for this is just brilliant! because of that the game still looks good up to this day and I doubt it will ever go bad
Ngl in terms of cutscenes, ds version had the best comic book experience. The panel by panel artwork that weren't shown in the main console version was awesome!
I actually still have the Ultimate Spider-Man video game for the Nintendo GameCube version. Speaking of which I had just recently got the Nintendo GameCube from the flea market and I'm currently playing it once again. Sometimes I wish they had made a sequel of the game.
i've always liked ultimate spider-man more than spider-man 2.. the art style really sets it apart nowadays too, just wish the symbiote suit was easier to obtain
To this day I still never managed to get 100% in USM, those collectibles are fun to get cause they unlock bonuses like costumes, comic cover, etc... don't show up on the map and there's 190 of them.
The lady who didn't flee took one look at Venom and was okay with what was about to happen. A pitiful waste, but I can't hate that she knew what she was about and stuck to her guns.
Kind of wild that the prequel to this game was handheld only, would've been cool if there was at least a wii and ps2 version of it but it probably wouldn't have been worth it with the third movie game and web of shadows.
I don't think Spider-Man Battle For New York is a sequel. It's actually a prequel, because it actually explains how Norman Osbourne became the Green Goblin using the 02 Compound, whereas in Ultimate Spider-Man, he's imprisoned in a S.H.I.E.L.D aquatic base, freed by the Beetle, then fights Spider-Man.
Ngl i think it'd be a good idea if someone makes a creepypasta or analog horror series on ultimate spider man Java cuz of its uncanny'ness and cuz of that creepy voice saying spider man
I don't think it's just "some guy" whispering Spider-Man in the mobile phone version. I think it's a low-quality wav of Tobey Maguire saying "Who am I? I'm Spider-Man" from the first movie.
When is this game getting a remaster for the PS5 and the PS4? I love the Ultimate Spider-Man Video Game which led to my obsession with Reading the Ultimate Universe.
