I've also finished the game actually at around 3-4am because I didn't want to leave the game on a cliffhanger and having to wait. The game overall is really great and albeit there are some issues, in particular, with the fonts/readability and the confusing ending..overall it was a great experience. The price point for it was also extremely good (it's a steal at 14$) for 25-30hours of content. I hope this game sells well, because I would love more games from this developer. Thanks for the review Mort!
The game itself is set to improve as the devaloper soaks in the feedback bestowed upon him by customers, so I can only recommend it more as time goes on, as any issues are ironed out.(i.e. in 1-3 weeks after one-two patches; the first patch may even be today). Regarding the ending, I would agree that it came on a little sudden and juxtaoposed a little with what came before it. But, there were many times throughout the text were subtle hints were dropped and one overt one that the ending would likely take this turn. I won't spoil anything in the comments here, but I assure you they are there. But yeah, it's a nice game. He did rather well considering he developed it solo.
Really enjoying the game. Restarted after getting the ship, because I made several build mistakes, and also realized the fire tree is terrible and battle magos is just not as good as guild magos.
It is really nice to see how much the quality of reviews increased over the years, and how much detail and passion is put to the whole project. Love the channel and already shared it with many people

We need more modern games with Commodore 64 aesthetics, the C64 was so unique and iconic, there's nothing quite like it and with a talented artist that knows how to work within the parameters of that style it can be striking and outstandingly memorable, as seen here in Skald.
I wish the style was more influenced by the Amiga 500 instead of the C64. Even as a kid in the 1980´s the C64 graphics rubbed me the wrong way. It felt feverish seizure inducing and kinda weirds me out. The Amiga had a more eyefriendly style

thanks for what you are doing man; there are few games these days that are not recommended by you, that i play - i like most of the things that you seem to like and i believe you content was quite missing until you came up - so, thanks!
Good Lovecraftian games are few and far between, I'll take what I can get. I have a dream that Larian will make a Call of Cthulhu CRPG, one day folks, one day.
You and I share the same dream. A call of cthulu crpg that focuses on deep decision trees and very minimal combat. This i why I think larian would do better even though personally I have more fun with owlcat crpgs(jank and all). I'm praying for larian to do CoC or my absolute pipe dream would be Rippers, think bloodborne style monster hunting crpg with exceptionally brutal and fast combat like CoC where combat is to generally be avoided unless there are no choices.
If you haven't played Sunless Seas I recommend it. It's more a humorous take on cosmic horror but addictive AF once you get past the slow hard start. Been around a few years so prob can be picked up cheap. The sequel Sunless skies is great too but maybe not a classic like SS.
@@imALazyPanda I think that the lack of emphasis on combat is what puts a few developers off but Larian have shown that deep dialogue trees with none combat resolutions do work but paired with a solid combat system you have a winning formula, I'll still keep hoping someone finds a way to make that pure CoC experience.
There’s so much about this game to love. I just hit my 100% tonight and I’m over the moon with it. I fell in love with the world, the lore, and the characters (Roland especially). $45 is pretty steep for what it seems to be. I don’t even mean how ugly it is. Plenty of good games are ugly. (The way the party walks around is hilarious, though. So doofy looking!)
Thanks for the video. There is day 1 DLC, but it's just cosmetics and the soundtrack, which, as the devs said in response to my last comment, is a banger. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
Completed it, a fantastic experience and I liked the ending style. Nailed the Ultima-style so well indeed, oh my...I'll probably remember the great atmospheric music for a long time. I hope the developer gets all the good things he deserves (and we, a sequel of a kind)! Thanks!
The best part is that while it looks retro, it’s not complicated like retro games. At no point was i fighting with the program itself, or trying to figure out how something works like I often experience in older RPGs.
Love this type of game to tryto recreate older title but more accessible, and more for me that never play this type of game, i think this will be one my fisrt to enjoy
This game is awesome. The atmosphere, music, the constant tension you feel. I want more of it. I just finished reading like 20 short stories from HP Lovecraft and playing this game comes on point! So many similar themes are present here.
Great review! I've been playing this game for 3 or 4 day by now. Game is great and worth every penny and I agree with pretty much of what you said! I'd add a couple small complaints like some class balance, some encounters/areas being a slog (yes tower of ashes im talking about you), etc. I'd love to see something like in PoE1 and 2 where you and your companions can start out with the kind of weapons you chose for them. Found it kinda frustrating not finding the weapon type i invested feats into in the very early game.
I feel as if he tones down the contrast on the background sprites, it would do a lot for visual clarity. But other than that it really does look unique.
