    100% Agree I rode on regular bike and yesterday I rode 10 miles with my 89year old Dad on his Specialized Levo. He wears oxygen from a backpack when he rides and he even had a pace maker put in two months ago. His e bike changed his world and even our relationships. Over the last few years we have done many many rides together which I cherish very much. I'm so glad they came out with them. I think they are worth every penny they cost!

    Getting an e-Bike not only changed my life for the better, it literally SAVED MY LIFE after almost dying twice from Covid, & also have Long Term Covid, on top of it, I'm a single father at 47, to a 7yo, & the only help & friend I had(my brother) died right after I got sick, he was also a huge help with my son, all this happening sent me into a terrible depression, I gained tons of weight, & would never leave the house, I have severe social anxiety, but after getting an e-Bike this year, ALL THAT CHANGED, I now love getting outside, I've lost 50+lbs, my heart & lungs are stronger, & it's an awesome hobby to share with my son! 😊
    I now own 3 e-Bikes, & am actually a paid intern with a pretty big e-Bike company, so not only if it a hobby I love, it's a new career I can't wait to learn the in's & outs about the business & see how far I climb the ladder of success in my new career! 😊👍💯

    Yes! I completely agree with the assertion that an e-bike is not cheating any more than a lighter bike would be. I got my wife a commuter that she rides on the Cherry Creek trail, here in Denver, to get to work. She does 20 miles 3 days a week and she's working down the level of assist she uses and is getting stronger. I've also noticed that the exercise has improved her disposition. She actually likes to ride now and, best of all, I get to ride with her! All that said, I do think the use of e-bikes on mixed-use trails presents some ediquette and safety concerns, but those can be solved with some convention and good citizenship.

My bike is a propella 7s, it has the 250 battery,and 400 peak motor, the bike goes for around 1300 which is not bad it's a city bike but I've rode it everywhere. which makes it a class 1 ebike . Throttle assist is a great way to get going or get a little umph when you need to turn from a stand still. Works great for a little extra help on hills but overall pedal assist at the midpoint setting 2 or 3 seems to work really well. Get outdoors and have some fun everyone. You will not believe how much you will start finding reasons to use the E-bike over your car for short stints around your home, groceries, etc. Game changer for sure!

In 2020 I ordered a second with front hub e-assist (class 1) It took 9 months to arrive, due to the pandemic. These are custom made. It’s light enough for me to carry up and down stairs. Now I know why I’m a patreon of your channel and it’s because you produce such awesome, personal and down to earth content. Prior to a couple of years ago I was an avid outdoor photographer who did a lot of hiking, often around 16 miles a day to get to cool locations such as waterfalls and animals and such and 16 miles was pretty good for a then 56 year old guy. But then I started having trouble with walking and having lots of pain in my right knee and eventually having pain from my right hip down to my toes. Going to the doctor and being sure it was from a torn meniscus from years ago I was diagnosed with having a bad hip and after X-rays and a MRI it showed that my hip joint was bone on bone with no cartilage left. My hiking and backpacking days were over. 😢 So last year my wife and I purchased Vivi touring ebikes which are more like a hybrid bike, with 26 inch mountain bike tires \ street tires and from just watching your video they must be a class 2. They have a top speed of 20 mph and have both pedal assist and throttle with three levels, one being the slowest and three the fastest. And they’re equipped with 7 Shimano speeds. Last summer we were just riding occasionally, usually on vacations. This year I’ve been riding weekly. And although my hip replacement surgery is in October, last week I actually rode 10 miles with the motor off and riding it like a normal bike and besides being fun I really got a great sweaty workout. And the main reason I’m telling you all this, is riding bikes doesn’t hurt my hip and now I look forward to riding my ebike. Hopefully after I recover from hip surgery and get somewhat back to “normal” I can eventually get a Priority 600x like yours although I’m quite a bit older than you so riding across Europe probably won’t happen but because of you, I can dream about doing that, or riding Switzerland and eating chocolate filled tortillas. Thanks for inspiring so many of us and hopefully you’ll read this comment even though you made this video a year ago. Have a great day wherever you are and I pray that you will always be safe. 😊😊

    I've been riding them for 5 years. Bought a really good one three years ago--a Gazelle and love it. I do wish it had a throttle sometimes. Throttles come in handy when trying to get going from a stop on a steep hill, or in a lot of traffic. The advantage to ebikes is when you are riding and a knee starts hurting, or you are tired, you can dial up the assist level and keep on going with less pain. I recently figured out that I can bring home a watermelon via my ebike. I live in a small, ranching/ag town but am no longer the only e-biker here. Now, I need to get going as I want to go for a ride before the heat sets in. Good luck with your new bike.

    My ebike got me riding after 20 years. As my fitness increased I found I wanted to buy a conventional bike again. So now I ride both. My ebike does have a throttle, but the only time I touch it is to help me get quickly across a particularly busy intersection - in other words, when using it makes me safer. I agree with everything Ryan says about the joy of riding, and the freedom it offers. I get my exercise on an ebike, but I get it going twice as fast, three times as far. I do worry that the marketers stressing speed and power and some rogue ebikers who think it's fun to cruise multi use trails at 25 miles an hour are going to get the rest of us regulated or banned from some prime biking areas.

    Duzer’s most important tool? Answer below.
    Sorry to be the wet noodle Ryan but…the energy used from rare earth metal extraction to battery manufacturing is enormous. Lower prices on ebikes often means lower quality batteries and power management which is leading to more battery replacements and worse more fires. Lithium batteries are currently not sustainable. Recycling? Nope. And finally weight. A good chunk of battery energy goes toward pushing the battery forward in space. I’ll stick with good old human power until they come up with a sustainable, and lighter, battery technology.

      Of course e-bikes aren't completely clean (nor is anything that's manufactured - including pushbikes), but it's WAY cleaner than using an automobile for transportation. Plus driving in a crowded metro sucks.

    • @MaShcode
      @MaShcode 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beaveronabike Never said it wasn’t “clean”. Lead-acid also provides clean current and is infinitely recyclable compared to lithium based cells. Ebikes are being marketed as a solution to achieve carbon neutrality. My point is there’s a bit more behind the curtain when you trade technology for human power.

    • @beaveronabike
      @beaveronabike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaShcode Yeah, no doubt that some (most?) fail to see the bigger picture. There isn't a human alive achieving carbon neutrality. Even someone living in the bush & never making contact with another human is probably cutting vegetation and burning wood to stay warm. It just isn't possible to be carbon neutral and be alive at the same time. But you can reduce your footprint. If an e-bike can take a car off the road, that's a win for everybody. Drivers get one less car to contend with, that guy riding to work is in better shape, probably happier, and has more money in his pocket.
      I do not own an e-bike. Yet. Only pushbikes. Been riding them for 40 years. But I'm trying to find a way to make it practical to start riding to work and only an e-bike can make that possible.

I have always had a weight problem and it's only gotten worse with age (I am 59). Now, with my ebike, it is not uncommon for me to ride 60 miles in a day. I also try to do 15 miles 3 days a week during the lunch hour at work. Mine is a class 2 cargo bike (although the top speed is roughly 30mph). I have upgraded the stock equipment to include a 1000 watt mid drive motor and a Sturmey Archer 5 speed IGH. I can carry up to 4 batteries although I usually just carry 2. The funny thing is I didn't get the bike because I felt I needed the assistance, I got the bike because I wanted to be able to do even longer rides than I was doing on my normal bike. I can definitely see how using the ebike for grocery shopping would be a big plus. Now you can buy that extra weight in one trip to the grocery store instead of multiple trips.

      Okay, sound like you are the perfect candidate to convert the bike you have, to an Ebike. I suggest a geared hub motor, they are easier on a battery then say a direct drive magnetic motor. I put a front wheel with a hub motor on my bike and I love it. Plus if something does go wrong. I can drop the motorized wheel, put my non motorized wheel on, and I'm good to go while repairs are made to the motorized wheel. Now depending on how much you weigh, or how much you need to haul/carry, will depend on the size of the motor you need. The standard hub motor is 350 watts, and has a load capacity of about 350 pounds, so take that into account. You can get motors all the way up to 1000 watt. Lastly, do not get it from Amazon, yes they are cheap, and thats the problem, plus lack of customer support. Okay, thats it, if you have questions, feel free to ask me. Stay safe.

    I have been a cyclist since 1960, and I have an ebike on order now, should arrive in the next few days. No, I am not giving up my regular bikes, but I plan on using the ebike for utility riding around town, especially to work since my job entails dealing with the public I don’t want to get all hot and sweaty getting to work, especially since I have to climb some pretty steep if not long hills. Ride the ebike to work, to the store to get a few groceries, maybe to the LBS when I need a new derailleur cable or whatever, use one of my regular bikes to go out for a ride for exercise.

In fact, I owe a lot to ebikes: 1, My first TH-cam uploads were ebike vids, 11 years ago. 2, due to my love of ebike commuting, I was invited on my first RAGBRAI in 2012. 3, it was through that experience, and going back to Iowa every year to ride, that I eventually found your vids and got my 600x. Ebikes have enriched my life a lot over the last decade; I can't imagine life had I not ditched my car in 2011.

      There were many e-bike operators on RAGBRAI this year who were careless, of the verge of reckless. I was riding a tandem so was already less maneuverable than regular singles. There was a couple that for some reason didn't give a crap about the flow of bicycles who came to an almost screeching halt in the left lane that caused a bunch of bikes, including me and my partner to have to hit our brake hard, then only moments later zoom away. We stopped in a town just to get away from them, they were a freaking menace.

    As a dutchie i am happy we only allow the 2 models of assist, it forces people to peddle. Also on some models you can track how much you are powering and how much the bike brings in over time. I find once on speed i keep over the point where the bike assists again depending on model so its more a comfort thing when you have headwind, getting going or when tired you just hold back a little and the bike puts in more. Now our country is flat very flat but anyone who thinks as a kid (all dutchies have that memory) riding your bike to school with headwind and rain is easy think again.... ebikes take these 'rough' edges of the riding is a much better way of looking at it.

With such strong infrastructure for biking/walking/public transport, a class 1 or 2 are all that's needed. 25kph are all that's needed since you don't want to speed by others biking doing 40kph. I absolutely agree with all the good points you make about e-bikes, but I do have a bit of a problem with more than a few of the people that use them. You kind of introduced something just after the 7:00 mark about people that haven't ridden in years. It is certainly great that they have found a way to get out more, but since many likely haven't ridden in a long time, they seem a bit clueless with regard to trail etiquette and the whole share the trail thing. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have been "buzzed" by an e-bike rider who comes from behind and passes without warning while sometimes not allowing very much spacing as they go by. I tend to ride on paved trails at 19/20-ish mph, and they totally blow by me like I'm standing still. BTW - I am 65, and though there have been a handful of younger offenders, the majority of the folks I am referring to are older than me. Maybe we could use a good PSA on this.

    Great video Ryan. I got an ebike last winter. I'm 71. Been riding analog previously., and still do at times. I started feeling the need to ease up on the push up the hills and be a bit easier on the knees. I usually ride in assist 1, and 2 or 3 up hills depending. When i'm on the flat or slight downhill I've started just off the assist till i need it again , to save battery. I'm doing rides with hills i normally wouldn't do unless i was willing to do allot of walk a bike, and at 71 thats no fun anymore. As you have said you can still get a workout if you need it, it's all up to your assist level selection. Keep up the good work. Cheers from BC.

Managing on tour setting to get up to 75miles per charge , the only draw back that I keep finding with my particular bike is the impossibility to travel on the EU/UK railways , where one has to hang their bike on a hook designed for smaller rimmed wheels , as for trying to lift the bike up ? however the newer trains have a better storage method .

    Currently trying out my mom's Current - a sweet bike. Agreed that throttle e-bikes mostly eliminate the exercise aspect of cycling (I've noticed that I usually almost exclusively use the throttle), but I still think they're great if they get people out of cars. Some people don't really want to pedal or don't want to pedal all the time, and I find myself using a throttle e-bike more often than a pedal-assist because it allows me to put in as much effort as I want (including zero effort, if that's how we're feeling). No traffic, no emissions, and a far lower carbon footprint than even an electric car (with a battery 100+ times as big and 10x less efficient)! Oh, and affordable, so if we got our act together as a country one could imagine communities where people do almost all their trips on bikes and e-bikes!

    Hi, Ryan. Thanks for another great video. I am 70 years old and own a Specialized Kenevo SL e-bike. It is an electric enduro bike with 170mm of travel, mountain bike tires, electric shifting, and an electric dropper post. I have a blast doing small jumps and drops, blasting around berms, and riding across skinnies. But that is just the beginning. I have many more miles on it riding on the pavement. Weather permitting, I got out on the country roads near my house a few times a week. I typically ride from 30 to 60 miles. Usually on low or no assist until I get fatigued and then just increase the assist so I can keep going. I would love to ride my bike to do errands. The reason that I don't is that, in my area, there are no bike racks or other good means to lock up a bike. My bike cost over $10,000 so I would hate to see it stolen. I still haven't fully gotten over the bad feeling I get when I think of your Trek 1120 being stolen. As punishment, bike thieves should be forced to work for ten years with half their salaries going to purchase bikes for people whose bikes were stolen.

I have pedal assist, but also have a throttle, which is useful for getting started from a stop sign or stop light, specially if I am pulling a trailer. Oh, yes, head winds, not much of a problem any more. Yeah, to replace my ebike I think would cost about 3000. And lastly, if you have a bike you love, it fits you well, and its easy to maintain, and you want a Ebike, convert your bike by using a hub motor. I did that with mine, a hub motor on the front wheel. Works great. Have fun and stay safe.

    Very informative video Ryan, love your bike👍Here in the UK and Europe we are restricted to 15.5mph (25kph) but I think it works well here and it doesn't stop me getting close to 50mph on big descents😁 I treated myself to a Giant Road E+1 Pro for my 60th birthday, just over 4 years on and I'm close to 21,000 miles covered, it really changed my life for the better👍I covered many thousands of miles on a standard bike but after 2 lengthy illnesses the e bike was a no brainer for me! I'm actually planning a big ride this Wednesday, over 150 miles and I can't wait to get going😁

    Ryan, great video! Frankly your video of you and your Mom motivated me to purchase a E bike. I've been mountain biking/ road biking for decades. My new E machine was a absolute game changer for me! A joy to ride!
    What bike did I get? Of course a Priority Current! (Thank Mom for me). I couldn't have made a better decision. Customer service was the best! Great bunch of people! May I add for your viewer's, I discovered on Reddit, if you have a Costco membership, one can receive a $700 discount on the Current. Hard to believe, but true! I have the receipt to prove it!
    Thanks again brother, I love your videos! And yes, e biking is a Joy producing/ smile making adventure! God bless. 🙏

I do have a REI peddle bike though with panniers and that is good for groceries. Bike theft is bad here though, hate to think what they will do to e-bikes. Peace.

      I felt the same but I knew if I was honest with myself I wouldn’t take my standard bike the 22 miles round trip to work as often as I would an e bike. I got a class 1 e-bike/pedal assist and now I take my bike almost every day to work. On the way to work when it’s hot I can put it in the highest level assist and not get there too sweaty. I still have to work a lot. I burn 700 calories a day. So I’m still getting exercise but I’m going faster and if I’m tired and need extra help I can crank up the assistance

    I bought my first e-bike in 2010 (or right around there), a Japanese Panasonic. NiMh battery, 250w, pedal assist, 4 speed Shimono internal hub. $1200. That was actually plenty of power. Had an eco mode switch and full power. In fact, even on the 4th year same battery, it would still give me enough assistance for most conditions. Got two more after that but different bikes. Last was a 500w 28mph. Liked them all. I always told people you can get as much exercise as you want to. And it does give you the motivation to go out where you might not feel as highly motivated to ride. That's a really nice bike.

  • @hardmtnbiker

    I agree that eBikes are better for some and the perspective that you described makes a lot of sense. From my perspective, we have electric motor mountain biking on our local trails near Los Angeles. Nothing wrong with that but not to point out the obvious, but a short 2-3 mile climb then the same descent on a pedal assist motorized mountain bike is about the equivalent of guy using a riding lawnmower for his small yard. Yes it’s good that he’s outdoors and yes it’s more exercise than holding a remote control and flipping channels. All I’m saying is eBikes are something that serious cyclist will probably always avoid unless they’re filling the transportation need or have specific use cases that they want that power assist.

      I can do 10 2-3 mile climbs a day easy on my ebike, so just more fun. You can work as hard or as little as you want. Ride up hill with no assist, my bike weighs 60lbs, there is your work out...
      What about all the trails with rides up, or ski lift? seems no better than ebike. Borrow one for a week, then come back and comment. I still ride a regular bike, but love love love my ebike.

    • @hardmtnbiker
      @hardmtnbiker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joeshmoe7967 it’s good that you are outdoors riding and you get the benefits of regular exercise. I have rode a fat tire eBike and a cargo eBike at the bike demo InterBike in Las Vegas. They’re fun but for me I wouldn’t ever want to use one, I’m choosing to keep my stamina and keep fit. If I want another toy then I would buy one for fun but never think of it as something for fitness. It’s like buying an Apple Watch and making daily step for beyond 10k steps. Sure it’s healthier than sitting all day but it’s not really a fitness plan.

    • @maryharrington8983
      @maryharrington8983 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@hardmtnbiker I don't agree with you. A fitness plan that you will actually do is a good one. When you know you have power back-up, you'll take that ride even if you are tired, etc. For myself, as a senior (in good health), I look at a bicycle as a tool to take me further than I can walk, and an E-bike is a tool that can take me further than I can ride an unpowered bicycle. There are miles of trails in the LA area, an E-bike makes it possible to get into the back country and/or see places you've never seen before. Just like a car, or an aeroplane, it opens up a whole new world.

    I love my eBike! When I was 12 years old I was diagnosed with a bone disease. My femur bone stopped growing and caused severe pain in my hip. To this day my right leg is about 2 inches shorter than my left and yes it's painful to walk. When I ride my eBike and I'm riding across the country it doesn't hurt so bad. So for those who think it cheating get over yourself because without it I wouldn't be out riding at the age of 47. Yes when I was much younger I rode a road bike (Fuji Ace) a lot. Now I need the extra help from the assist and it got me back out on two wheels. It's not cheating and those who think it is try walking in someone else's shoes.

    I've been riding ebikes for almost 5 years now, I love that I can do my job commute which includes a lot of climbing in my work clothes. Got a similar setup to yours with a gates carbon belt drive and an enviolo hub, I guess the biggest difference is that it doesn't have indexed gears, so it's very easy to dial in for whatever cadence you want to sit at.
    Absolutely love not having to mess around with oiling a chain and adjusting the derailleur constantly, it's incredibly low maintenance.
