Volkswagen Golf 2017 1.5 TSI evo, GTD, GTI (ENG) - First Test Drive and Review

  • Volkswagen Golf 2017 is the face lifted version of the Mk7 Golf. The best-selling compact received a modest exterior update, but on the inside Volkswagen Golf is packed full of modern technologies. 2017 Golf can now be equipped with driver aids like the Traffic Jam Assist, which follows the car in front in traffic at speeds up to 60 km/h. With the new Discover Pro infotainment system driver gets access to online information. An important update is the 1.5 TSI engine, which may be a sign Volkswagen has reached a wall in the downsizing department. During the launch even I was also able to drive the refreshed Volkswagen Golf GTD and GTI.

    I for one am happy the 1.5 tsi will deliver better economy as I'm driving my 1.4 tsi 125 bhp almost only in the city and am always looking to get better economy without sacrificing a comfortable level of performance. It might not be as exciting as an GTI but it's a great engine for cruising and commute.

    • @sic22l
      @sic22l 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1.5 TSI feels slower than 1.4 TSI so you'd have to sacrifice some performance.

    • @turboclown
      @turboclown 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      But keep in mind I got the 125bhp right now so the 150bhp will feel adequate I'm pretty sure ;). I don't even use all the power the 125bhp has to offer, how could I, there is a 50km/h limit in town.

    • @sic22l
      @sic22l 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Johannes Actually both are pretty much identical, 150hp version has slightly more ooomph at very high revs and that's about it. It's about torque and engine characteristics - 1.4 pulls nicely from the lowest revs while 1.5 feels sluggish, doesn't really like accelerating.

    • @turboclown
      @turboclown 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, I'll take one for a spin soon. As I'm not a sporty driver I think I will not miss a thing and be happy with a better economy. I'd be really interested in the 130bhp blue motion version but there is no information on this one to find anywhere.

    • @sic22l
      @sic22l 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Johannes BlueMotion means longer gear ratios or some aerodynamic tweaks - none of them matter in the city.

      Somewhat different style. Kind of like Autogeful, Ausfahrt.tv or my colleague Zachar from Autocentrum here in Poland.
      Does the word "explicit" in Romanian mean the same as "in-depth"?

    • @YOCOSMINMAX16
      @YOCOSMINMAX16 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they are synonymous, but it`s about expressing their feelings, they tend to "fear" to say all they want to complain about a car. And also no references or jokes. :D

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your car market is about a third of ours, so I guess it's even more difficult for motoring media to remain profitable. Hence careful choice of words.
      As for jokes and references, I find jokes about cars sound much better in English, than in Polish. And I sometimes get the impression at least some of my viewers would rather see a serious car review.
      In fact right now I'm exchanging comments with a guy, who thinks I shouldn't joke about Civic Type R spoiler, because it's a 310 hp sports car. Probably he has an ironing board stuck to the back of his Calibra :)

    I actually prefer the pre-face lift golfs more, the digital gauge cluster ruins it for me, and the adaptive bs getting more features...mine already annoys the hell out of me. Did VW at lest make turning off all aid systems possible on the GTI and GTD models this year? its the one thing I miss about the mk6 golf, you turn off TCS and that shits off.

    Marek, did the GTI you tested have DCC, would you recommend it as an option or is the normal setup good enough for most everyday driving? Thanks..

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I can tell all cars at the launch event had DCC. I haven't driven a VW without DCC in ages. Every press car seems to have it these days. But TBH in everyday situations you'll probably not use it. That said it may be packaged along with something else you want.

    I think driving a car is in The Netherlands is most expensive in Europe:
    starting price from
    Golf 1.0 85hp €21990
    Golf highline 110hp 27750
    Golf Gti 38700
    Golf R 54000
    Example to own a car Golf 6 105hp
    insurance: 70€ a month allrisk
    taxes 120€ per 3 months (depends on weight and CO2)
    petrol Euro95, 1 liter is around €1,50 !! wtf

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Face lifted GTE is coming.
      To be precise it's not a hybrid engine, but a hybrid powertrain. It's a combustion engine working with an electric motor.

      Golf trashes Toyota's hybrids in driving dynamics and powertrain responsiveness. Even Kia's hybrid system is better (the one from Niro).

    Hi Marek, would you choose 1.4 TSI 150PS or 1.5 TSI 150 PS? Why? It is offered both at the dealer with small price difference (650 euro). Which feels better to drive?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I could tell during this launch event the 150 hp 1.4 TSI felt more responsive, than 1.5. I don't know why. VW claims everything is fine, and the new engine is better. What else would they say? :)
      I haven't driven the 1.5 TSI since. I'm waiting for a test car with this engine to be available in other models.

    • @u2yi
      @u2yi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply, I think it will be a very interesting topic to see more detailed review of those 2 engines:) Right now I see no performance boost in the new 1.5 but slightly better claimed fuel economy. Another thing is we don't know about the 1.5 reliability, the 1.4 older version had some issues in the beginning but later it was fixed so the 1.4 is kinda time proven. Though the 1.5 is not largely different from 1.4 but who knows...

      I'd say you get Mazda handling and equipment level/quality beyond KIA. Yes, if you take a full spec Golf you're getting dangerously close to a 1 Series or a 3 Series even, but you won't be able to match Golf equipment without adding 50 percent to a 1 Series base price.
