I just put an 801 back together, for whatever reason it seems the input shaft gear isn't hooking into the bevel gear. Input and output shafts rotate free from each other, I'll try again in a high gear maybe adjust the spring and ball set screw
Thank you for taking the time to make this vijeao.. I am rebuilding a 12/38 craftsman with a 6 speed that will not shift easily if not at all. I have removed the unit form the tractor but have not cracked the case yet.. Your pioneering guidance and real time disassembly of these units have given me the confidence now to make a successful repair of my own unit... Thank you.
Years later and I have the same problem with no reverse. Yes, all it needed was a good clean up as the original bentonite grease had dried out on the shaft and gummed it up but cleaned it up with kerosene and an old tooth brush. After a thorough cleanout, I noticed the tapered input sprocket was galled up from lack of lube and the 2 roller bearings were rusty also and were replaced. Instead of replacing with bentonite grease and having cleaned it all away (for incompatibility reasons don't mix it with any other grease), I replaced it with Calcium Sulphonate grease, Ceran XM220 made by Total. It has the same consistency, and even color, and is an extreme temperature, extreme pressure, water-resistant, heavy-duty grease that does not break down like the old bentonite. It is still important to be careful when water blasting the trans and keep away from the shaft opening and I installed a grease nipple on the input shaft and 2 either side on the axles. Thanks so much for the prep video that gave me the confidence to open it up and repair it.
aracp does the chain come apart anywhere. I didn't degrease it and look for a key link yet? Do the gears ever break apart. I'm thinking of parting out the gears, but I don't know if they would sell. Thanks
If my memory serves me correctly the chain comes apart. It's been a long time. If I ever had a chain with out a master I used my breaker tool. When I would tear it down for the parts washer the chain did not have to break down for complete dis-assembly. Most issues were differential breakage and hard shifting from rust. Only gear I remember breaking other than the Diff was the pinion on the drive pulley.
Informative video, aside from some mistakes. Summary, open it, clean out 100% (not 90) of the old watery bad grease from the case and all parts, relubricate, and reassemble. Use a rubber mallet on that shaft, not a steel hammer. I don't like using impact wrenches on aluminum, as sometimes the speed of the wrench strips the threads. Done it. Just my thoughts.
Thanks for pulling it apart and making the vid - not a lot of vids showing the inside. I saw a video of the insides of my Ram 1500 8-speed auto and it looked like it came out of an F-35 fighter, but this looks pretty manageable. Interesting the chain drives reverse.
Thanks for making the video. It is very helpful to fix mine. My shifter needs cleaned and I need the bevel pinion gear and the gear it meshes with and new seals. It should be like new for $70 or $80 instead of buying a worn out used one. Everything else looks good.
Thanks for this amazing video. Makes me feel better on opening mine. Have a great shape lx172 and the shifting is extremely tough. I wonder what il find once inopen it up.
Hi! What could be wrong with the Peerles 700 5 speed When the machine is running, it doesn't go overboard and shake the gear stick What could be wrong and where can I get parts ordered in Finland?
I mix gear oil and grease together and it makes a thinner but not to thin mix that lubes the trans better .. Water in one of them is not good .. Thanks man
Great video. Thank you. I am about to take apart a Peerless Transaxle 930-039 manual. Its stuck in 2nd gear. I think the keys are bad its on a Simplicity Regent 12, 1990.
the gear pinion that connects to the belt pulley is wobbling on mine keeping it from moving smooth, or really at all. Pretty sure it could be the bearing, but would appreciate your expert opinion. great video
My 3628-P1 transmission is leaking from the axle shaft. Can I change the flanged bushings and the thrust washer to keep it from leaking. The transmission belongs to my MTD Pro 1548GF.
Im here by searching for peerless tranny info. Trying to find out how to adjust neutral on a peerless h2000 hydro unit. Craftsman mower, swapped trannys (both h2000 with different following numbers). With lever in neutral detent it crawls backwards. Where is the adjustment made?
Hey I am having a similar problem with my transaxle - I split the case to add some high heat gear oil (because it will be used for a racing mower build) but after putting her back together have found that the yoke will only snap into reverse, neutral, fifth and sixth. It just sort of slides through first, second, third and forth freely. It wasn't doing this before, will a complete disassembly and cleaning help to remedy?
What do with busted spline shaft exactly at splines, try fixing that crap, My only choice uc use my other transmission and pull sgaft out 6 speed put it to 5 speed. Guess under stress they can't pull 6' ×4' trl with small load dirt, etc or pulling crap out dirt .
thanks for help very insightfull really needed the help. mine shifts good with eng. off but with eng. running it stays stuck in gear, what you think if you have time. thanks again
on top of trans I heavily oiled the selector, with the engine off using my hand moving it back and forth many times trying to get the oil to run down the shaft in to the trans, the next day it was working ok. some oil must have got in on that shaft, don't no how long it will last but for now it works. good luck
Doublewide6... bro... I've been kind of taking a break from TH-cam and still am on a break but will be back mid January just thought I'd let you know... Since I assume you noticed a lack of comments from me lately
I’ve watched & listen to all kinds of videos about how to repair Tecumseh, Peerless Transaxles & none of them really show how to put the gears & shift washers back the on the shafts. Please show how this is done if you are going to make a video on how to repair a Transaxle show how the gears face & which way the washers go on if you people can’t do this, then don’t make a video on how to repair a Transaxle.
if the oil seals are cheap and no good and allow the water to come in then certainly gear oil would run out in my case the clam shell is cracked has two holes about 3/8 in diameter I would like to know if someone will send me a Top or bottom clamshell I don't know which one it is yet I have to look but the oil seals on this machine is crap and obviously the grease in the machine is crap must be a water based Grease
Why are you making a video about something you have no idea about????? you say things are completely wrong. tell people who want to know something not so nonsense!!!
Thanks for taking the time to pull it apart and give us an overview of what to expect inside. Looks like mine should be worthwhile to repair. Thanks!
Wow. I worked at PEERLESS in Salem Indiana for 17yrs building these. Nice to see them on here.

Dorian, did you ever build the 1320’s?
@@oscarjones5773 i worked alot of lines in there. one of my friends still builds those i think.
Hello do you know anyone near Indianapolis that could work on a transmission like this one ?

Thanks for taking it apart , I was fighting mine to shift
Worked on those units under warranty in the 80s.
If the diff or chain didn't break it was clean it up (rust) and relube. Thx for the video.

Hey, thanks for doing this video. This gives me more confidence to repair my similar model with great expectations. 👍👍👍

Hello what type of grease would you fill the inside and how much ? Thank you
Thank you so much man! Mine is stuck in 6th gear and I betcha it’s exactly the same issue!
Hi! What could be wrong with the Peerles 700 5 speed
When the machine is running, it doesn't go overboard and shake the gear stick
What could be wrong and where can I get parts ordered in Finland?
Actually, the biggest gear is gear one, and those five gears arent welded to the shaft, they are all sitting on a fixed spline.
The stuff they put in it is usually the reason these things fail. That bentinite. I would clean that crap out and replace with a grease and oil mix.
What kind of grease should we use on these when they get reassembled?
Excellent video, thanks
Alonso Sanabria Happy you liked it. Thanks
Cool video! Why would they use grease instead of gear oil?
Love2boat92 grease won't leak out like oil can and run dry.
That is true.
I cant get the bolts out that hold the spring and ball for shifting .
I mix gear oil and grease together and it makes a thinner but not to thin mix that lubes the trans better .. Water in one of them is not good .. Thanks man
ShawnMrFixit Lee I will have to try the gear oil and grease mix.
Yes please do , It tends to not stick to the transmission housing as bad and sticks to the gears better .. And it does not dry out as bad over time !
whats your grease oil ratio to mix it?
Great video. Thank you. I am about to take apart a Peerless Transaxle 930-039 manual. Its stuck in 2nd gear. I think the keys are bad its on a Simplicity Regent 12, 1990.

How much for your help this video was a great help
It's worth the price to watch if only to see inside that rascle! :>) Thanks, Doublewide!!
I like the MTD ones after seeing this 😂 a little bit more simple with 1 diff and like 2 drive gears.
Looks like somebody took a dump in that case!

Hi John Manning did you ever figure yours out, mine does the same thing

Ive had that happen to my transmission. A lot of water and little to no grease, I could not shift it at all.
autopsy - the chain is reverse im thinking
I found the brass bushings at Menards..
opposit - biggest will be lowest - input is on other gearset
Good video man
Reid Lauderdale Thanks for watching!
Good video, I have a 48 walk behind this would be helpful for. Hoes your son doing? I hope everything is going well.

Lawd dude what lil u showed. U could have made it a better vid by showing more talking less. And it would have been great 5 mins long
How many times can a guy say “warter” and act like that’s not weird?… Supposed to sound like “wAWter”.
