    I've never seen a TH-camr who is so prolific and also consistently very high quality, and for FREE too! Very impressive channel. I don't know how you do it, but I hope it's enjoyable and not causing burnout on top of other responsibilities

    Thank you for doing this series. Spinoza is one of the most difficult philosophers to grapple with, given that he actually lays out a complete framework for how the universe functions from first principles. Having read the ethics and understood

    The only "God" is Nature, and we and all things are but a minor part of Nature
    --Spinoza.--The simplest and the best philosophy.

    I recommend those new to Spinoza to work through the Ethics themsleves with Beth Lord or Steven Nadler's book or both on the Ethics. They are well written and easy to unsterstand. These videos of which I endured four contain a rushed, shallow and often wrong interpretation of Spinoza's work. Spinoza's masterpiece deserves better.

    Spinoza was a Jew. His primary introduction to God was via the Old Testament. I wonder what he thought of this verse: GENESIS 6:6:
    "And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart." (KJV). It implies God makes mistakes.

    Thank you for at least trying to explain this. I recently came across the concept of pantheism and Spinoza. My cursory understanding of Spinoza is in line with the way I have found myself thinking over the past decade or so. As a result, I have been reading…or trying to read ethics, but I really don’t follow what he’s saying, I have only been going by what other you tubers have been explaining to me. You’re explication is helpful in that you try to explain the primary text.
    I do have one question though. I agree that most people, if they’re honest with themselves, are able to comprehend what Spinoza describes as god, but what about those born with cognitive impairments? I imagine that in Spinoza’s era not many people born with Down syndrome or other defects lived long enough to be considered in his writings. Is this more of an explanation that things like that happen in nature and since nature is god it just is what it is or is there some way to explain this concept to those individuals?

    It's always the same when you discourse about the beginning of it all. Nothing existed and then it all existed. Is it fair to ask where the nothing itself was, or is that too far a leap? How did something came from nothing? Or are these just 'unanswerable' questions, so why bother to ask them at all?

    • @Mulli9anStew
      @Mulli9anStew 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He clearly answers these questions as substance creates itself. It is infinite, no beginning, no end.

    • @mglamarmd1
      @mglamarmd1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Mulli9anStew I find this argument to be a fallacious and logically untenable. "Creates itself"? Nothing just becomes something? How?
      It requires one to postulate a divine being? Who also came from nothing as well?
      And since everything has a preceding causal relation back to the genesis of the universe, then what happened at the Big Bang has led inevitably to me writing this response. Sorry, that takes more blind faith than I can muster.
      Plus, it leads to a philosophical conundrum when one expands this Determinism into the field of Ethics where it runs right into the concept of Free Will and Choice and renders both illusory at best. I do not see Determinism as the right substrate for a system of Ethics and its practical extension into Law.

    • @Mulli9anStew

      @@mglamarmd1 It would seem as though you aren't familiar with Spinoza's idea of god and haven't listened to the video you are commenting on. Probably not the best way to have a discussion regarding the topics that are fully addressed in this resource as well as many others.
      No one ever said "something came from nothing". Nor was it ever implied. You seem to be blindly throwing in your own misconceptions for the sake of argument.
      For your other point. From what other argument are you going to present the fact that everything stems from cause and effect; infinitely, eternally, always and forever. There isn't blind faith required, it's the ONLY logical approach to answering the question.
      I feel like these two points are enough. We'll just leave the determinism argument for another time.

      @@Mulli9anStew I did not get the POV that you did from the video. I did not get your take even after reading the collected works of Spinoza (600+ pages).
      I did get a few things from the university degree in Philosophy (Honors + Summa Cum Laude) I labored for. I learned to not jump to conclusions, not to assume 'facts' not in evidence, and to not let someone twist my words to fit their argument in the way that Sophists pride themselves in doing.
      To me, your reply seems guilty of such tactics. Perhaps you did not mean it that way? Typing thoughts can do that to an argument.
      In an 'Interpersonal Communications' course, I learned words are only 17% of effective communication. Sadly, such is the medium we have at our disposal.

      The problem is that you are asking direct questions about the material at hand without showing any evidence of having listened to the material. You are inserting your assertions, I.e. “something from nothing” and “divine being” and “determinism” and just running with it.
      Please if you are referencing a specific source of information, state your reference. How else is one to know where you got your information? I didn’t come across your assertions in this video so I am unsure where you are coming from.

      1. That’s your choice, I respect it.
      2. There is a skip button on long ads, the longest unskippable ads are 30 seconds.
      3. There exist ad-blockers and TH-cam Premium with no ads.
      4. The video creator put work into this, I think it’s fair that he be compensated for content that I consume for free. Ads achieve that.
      5. Even if the creator did not receive compensation for those ads (TH-cam monetization is complicated) they would be placed there anyway for the website to make money even if the creator did not will it.

    30 minutes in, I could not continue listening any longer. Why does the speaker give a chuckle time to time as though he does not agree with the concept, or even laugh at the philosopher? If you don't believe/follow the philosophy of Spinoza, why do you even try to teach someone else? If you aren't trying to "teach", say at least something original to oppose the thinker, or be fashionable about what you don't understand. I beg you to just stop producing something like this again until you understand things better.

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate your honesty and feedback. The intention is never to dismiss or laugh at the philosopher, but sometimes exploring deep ideas involves a bit of levity, especially with complex or abstract concepts. I’ll take your criticism to heart and work on presenting these ideas with more clarity and respect. Constructive criticism helps improve, and I value your input.

    My favorite part was the belief that a god would never be concerned with small beings like humans. And then later, the amazement at the near infinite odds at humanity existing and the "stars aligning" in such a specific way to allow life to exist. Hmmmmm.....
