  • Thank you for watching my fish tank video on stripping African Cichlids.
    Link for purchasing an Egg Tumbler or its parts is below:

    For any new or seasoned hobbyist, stripping and raising baby fish can be very fulfilling. Any hobbyist at some point wants to experience the process either for fun or can become intrigued at a level that they attempt raising fish to support their hobby or make a living from it. Raising fish for a living can be a extremely tough task and a commitment most are not willing to make.
    From this video that you can see that raising cichlid fry is not that complicated. Thanks to the female parent, if you let your her hold the babies long enough, the end product will be a bunch of fully developed little fish. If you are using an egg tumbler, you can strip the female much sooner. I have found that my success rate with a tumbler is very high. Most eggs will develop with no issue, unless they have not been properly fertilized. To avoid the unfertile eggs, let the female carry the mouthful a little longer and don't strip the day after you see her holding. It can take a few attempts with both parents to complete the task. If you let the female swim around for at least a week after breeding, then there is a good chance all the eggs she is holding will be fertilized and healthy.

    I am new to breeding African Cichlids. I recently suspected that one of my fish was holding. While moving my German Red Peacocks from one tank to another, I discovered two fry. Unfortunately one got sucked up in the filter, but I was able to save the other one and put it in a breeder box. I still suspected that this fish was holding, but I waited another week. I finally mustered up enough courage to strip her and I got 38 more additional fry. I wanted to be sure that they were free swimming fry with no egg sack attached. My question for you is why does one strip the fry before they become fully swimming fish? In my arrogant opinion, it seems to be more work having to put fry with egg sacks attached in a egg tumbler for 1 to 2 weeks than strip them about 2 weeks after discovery so that you will be stripping fully formed fry instead of fry with egg sacks attached. Newbie breeder who's just curious, that's all.

    One of my fish just had some fry her first ones. I have them all separated from my main tank on a 20 gallon tank. Should I separate the mother from the fry or will it be ok? And I'm feeding the fry little pieces of flake is that fine? Please need some help my first time having fry don't want them to die.

    • @MbunaMarcus
      @MbunaMarcus  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** No problem separating the mother from them...the fry will be fine on their own.

    so I striped my female lwanda and I think i might have hurt one of her fins. how to avoid this? 20 eggs on first breed is that a good number? great video your fish friend Dustin

    • @MbunaMarcus
      @MbunaMarcus  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to try and fold back the dorsal and pelvic fins before I strip. Its all how you hold them...you'll get it after a few attempts. Your Lwanda should be ok (fish have their fins damaged all the time). 20 is a solid number...you may get bigger yields the more times a female breeds down the road and as she grows. Cheers Dustin :)

    I am concerned about having too much filtration in regards to making the fry swim too hard, exhausting themselves, etc. Is this really a concern or no? I have a sponge filter in there now, they are in a ten gallon tank and are free-swimming like the fry at the very end of the video. The other filter i could add on would be a power filter, it's only a 5-15 though, so a ten is right in the middle. When they grow out of the ten, they will go in a twenty with that same filter.

    • @MbunaMarcus
      @MbunaMarcus  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +505aurora That will be fine...just make sure the intake tube of the power filter is covered with a sponge or panty hose so they don't get sucked up. Fry can take a lot of current...they'll be fine :)

    That was so cool to watch Marcus as you know I'm about to strip my female today and I am sooooo super excited to be doing this ... It's been 14 days now so I'm hoping the egg sac has gone and they'll be free swimming ..... When you did this video how long has your peacock been holding before you stripped her ???

    • @MbunaMarcus
      @MbunaMarcus  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +PsychedelicBabe This video was a couple years ago...I usually let the mbuna hold for 2 weeks and by then the yolk sacs are usually gone. Peacocks I usually strip within a week to 10 days but then but the eggs into a tumbler...if I don't have a tumbler available, then I find peacocks usually need around 20 or so days until the fry are yolkless :)

    • @DJ_LittlePea
      @DJ_LittlePea 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mbuna Marcus - Aquariums, Cichlids and More thanks for that Marcus good job you mentioned the peacock because I think I have one holding ..... My egg tumbler is on its way too so happy days 👏👏👏 it's really exciting doing all this and in enjoying it so much think I need to think about getting another fry tank lmao and another breeder box 😂😂

    I'm about to strip another dragon blood and this video should be helpful. The cheek squeezing big especially. But it's scary as all get out. (only stripping because I know both parents are dragons so I don't wanna risk her spitting in the tank)
    anyway, how do you like that tumbler? I have the Cobalt one and it looks different.

    • @MbunaMarcus
      @MbunaMarcus  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is bizarre for sure :) Egg tumbler does a great job. Mines very basic but as long as you see the eggs bouncing, you know whatever tumbler you're using is working.

    The biggest issue is actually catching the females -_- I have three females holding, but hell if I could even come close to catching them. They're very quick, and even with the water level reduced, they go in hiding inside their caves or mix up with the others. Any suggestions?

    • @MbunaMarcus
      @MbunaMarcus  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe try getting them when you do water changes....I have the same issue in my main display. I can only get the females when I bring the water right down. Lots of work but its worth it.

      @MBen89 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @MbunaMarcus

    • @MbunaMarcus
      @MbunaMarcus  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      UNDERWORLD VILLAN Should be better this time around. I always recommend stripping the female 7 to 10 days after noticing shes holding, just to ensure the eggs have been fertilized. I've stripped early and lost lots of eggs to fungas.

    • @MbunaMarcus

      Joey Garcia I grow them out in 5 gallon tanks and then upgrade them to a 20, then 35 before they go to sale.
