Why storm troopers miss is probably trigger discipline and not leading shots. The Targetting get overused and abused and probably struggles VS a moving target. The Targeting is a necessity because the training is probably poor and favors macho "Potemkin" style training rather good trigger discipline training and teaching the actual fundamentals properly. The suits are good, the training is not.
Andor was the only media that decided it was a good idea to reserve stormtroopers for significant scenes and utilize regular security guards as cannon fodder
@@NYG5 Andor is designed for a more realistic and well grounded view of the empire from the perspective of ordinary citizens and non plot armoured rebels. Just like rogue one, stormtroopers were feared by many rebels due to their aggressive tactics and precision and their fanaticism and willingness to die for Palpatine. When your thinking about it, a major factor of the fear surrounding stormtroopers is how much they charges directly at the enemy to overwhelm them and gain an objective without fear of death. A lot of them were definitely sociapaths
Did you also notice in the Clonewars series that trafic laws are set per planet. And not federalized. You can see this bc on some planets they drive/fly on the left, while on others they drive/fly on the right.
Leia herself said the only reason they walked out of the Death Star was because they were being tracked Look at stormtroopers at the Mandalorian, how the rarely miss a shot
Exactly. It's a well established plot point that Vader and Tarkin wanted them to get off the Death Star so they could be tracked. Alan even plays the clip that establishes this, so I don't know why he's calling it his "theory." The Stormtroopers were basically just shepherding them back to the Falcon so they wouldn't get lost in all the labyrinthine corridors.
I remember the TFU2 had a comic adaptation where a bounty hunter woman tagging along with Boba Fett tried to scavenge and sell the armor of dead Stormtroopers because of how valuable that gear was on the black market.
Unfortunately much like any sci-fi universe, the biggest counter to the honestly reliable common infantryman's kit is plot necessity. All known military research R & D branches are actively trying to develope "anti plot convenience" technology but currently have little to no success.
Even if the stun round didn't affect the armor's electronics, i remember reading somewhere that storm trooper helmets are linked to the owner. In a new hope Luke couldn't see anything out of the helmet because he didn't own that helmet so all those hud features were switched off meaning he was stuck looking through thin eye holes through polarized glass with no help from the helmet. Rex probably couldn't see anything out of that helmet because it was switched off too. Clone helmets didn't have an on switch, they just worked. You can see through it. Sure did help those commando droids pull off a clone trooper act when they can easily see through the helmet. Also i don't think that was Tarkin's plan to put a homing beacon and let the rebels go. His attitude towards Vader tells me that was Vader's idea and it was a ploy he made before. Vader put a homing beacon on a shuttle so when the ghost crew stole it and returned to their fleet, it triggered and lead Vader right to them.
@@nickolasrichmond8739 heard of george lucas and how he made it to where even if they could aim like uh hm clone troopers and actually hit targets then there armor and helmet would be the same design but they were not which is why even with a hud and other features looking through a small eye hole in a helmet still makes you miss shots just like medieval armor and helmets that block part of your vision still
It doesn't even have to be the electronics. When you got a helmet with eyeholes directly in front of your face the helmet needs to be adapted to your eyeposition. If your head is jsut a little bit longer you won't be able to see the floor.
@@jasperzanovich2504 true but think of it this way if the stormtrooper helmet is based of a roman helm where your eye position is either straight ahead of you or to your left and right but not down because of the eyeholes position within the helmet itself which means yes you will adapt to it but overall your aim will suck which is why everyone say's this that no matter where the eye holes are located your vison and your ability to look at your full scope of the area is blurred or none existent because of the limitations of where you can look which is why the stormtroopers can never hit their mark because if you look at how the look at their guns sights they look at it being far closer to that eye hole and if they do not use their guns and they are just looking around they move their whole head instead of just their eyes because they can not look fully left or right due to eye visibility being limited due to helmet construction and also how they can only look straight and if they once again want to look left or right they move their whole head
I think that a lot of people forget what a blaster to the body actually does, and that the armor is not designed to stop the round as much as it is to disperse the energy contained in the shot. Since the shots are plasma they would literally boil flesh, blood, and organs. The armor disperses it, and there are small details in some of the clonewars battles where we see the aftermath and many of the downed clones are not dead but knocked out or just too injured to get up on their own. Sometimes the downed clones move a little in ways like raising their arms or rolling a bit, which would be similar to someone being shot in a bullet proof vest. One medium to high caliber round would knock them flat on their back and break a rib or two, and it can take a few small caliber rounds, but too many and it is ineffective, or too powerful and they still die.
More people need to rewatch return of the jedi, The movie that literally shows us Leia, One of the hardiest badasses in the setting, Being almost entirely floored by a single blaster shot, That not only burnt a hole through her gear, But literally burnt and tore out the skin beneath it. We've seen up close what blasters do to a body and people just.... Always seem to forget that.
I think people can easily forget it because we barely ever see someone get shot on the skin, aside from the other comment mentioning Leia and maybe an episode from Clone Wars or Rebels. Saying that, because Star Wars is meant for kids, they obviously can't show full on gore, implied sure.
Same with modern plate carriers- I doubt ceramic plates can take a ton of shots before shattering into glass shards and dust- but it kept your insides IN, and kept bullets from getting in as well. However you may have broken ribs- which will make you down- but not out. Well out for that battle perhaps but you aren't dead, just too wounded to fight. The best option is to utterly tank the shot so you just feel like someone punched you hard and can keep fighting- the next best option is to just keep you alive at all.
The clone/storm trooper armor is what we call "ablative armor" It is a material with a low sublimation point (the temperature where a solid transitions directly into gas without melting first). When heated, the armor will rapidly evaporate, whisking away tons of thermal energy from the target and creating a dense cloud of gas that could diffuse further directed energy temporarily. Most real world ablative materials naturally degrade over time when exposed to things like heat, sunlight, RADs or strong enough EM fields.
@@CrysResan Ceramics are normally part of a composite armor system which both contains at least one other bullet resistant material (Kevlar) and can usually hold the shattered ceramic pieces in place after taking a hit. Other ceramic armor uses a bunch of small, overlapping plates to avoid the shattering issue.
The more time passes in this IP, the more I struggle to believe the rate of technological advancement across the movies given how stagnant their technology has been for thousands of years.
Don't forget that the Old Republic didn't made (real) wars for almost a thousand's years, without it, logically, technology was stagnating, there wasn't any necessity to improve, add also a very conservative way of life of the Jedis in particular and of society in general, think about old China, before the europeans arrived they were stagnating, no development of modern firearms, or improvements of printing processes, in some aereas, such as naval engineering really they went backwards.
It only stagnates on a visual level. I could go with examples for days but my favorite is how the Ebon Hawk was regarded as an extremely fast ship in Revan's time with its class 4 hyperdrive. Skip to the clone wars and your ship is slow if it's anything higher than a class 2, and just 20 years later the Millenium Falcon and Slave I had class 0.5
That always depended on the story being told, eh? Luke and Han couldn't see anything, except they must have been able to in order to navigate around the DS-1 with their wookiee "prisoner". Even motioned to invite someone into the lift, despite "not being able to see" with the helmet on. Its like a lot of things that get introduced, like chaincodes, that totally break freedom or functionality to serve the story.
@@orokusaki1243They did explain that, the helmet will not unlock all it's functions if you do not match the DNA code attached to it. If the helmet does belong to you then it gives you visibility and HUD like that of a Spartan from Halo. So you can "see" but it's very poor vision.
I always chalked it up to the helmets having a LED setting for visibility, and had Luke just adjusted the settings properly, he would have been able to see through the visor with no problem.
@@barbiquearea And he was also a little short for the armor he was wearing. Leia even commented on that when he stepped into her cell. That hinders anyone's ability to use worn equipment if it is too large or small for them.

Sometime they should show a helmets eye view of what a storm trooper is seeing in and out of combat. Kind of odd there hasn't been anything like that in all the shows that have come out.
I want to say think this can be chalked up to the fact we usually see people with stormtrooper armor going up against people with plot armor. They do great off camera or against no-name rebels on the ground. But then I remember ROTJ and the ewoks and suddenly this position doesn't seem very solid.
tbf the ewoks used very aggressive guerrilla warfare against the stormtroopers who were probably really overconfident due to the trap palpatine set up. Not to mention ewoks used projectiles like arrows and rocks, both if which will just shatter and pierce stormtrooper armour.
The ewoks had a lot of tactical advantages over the Imperials. 1. An ewok is much smaller height makes them a smaller target. 2. They blend into their environment much better than soldiers in white, plastic armour. 3. You can see a bright, glowing laser bolt, hear it clearly, and judge where it's coming from much easier than an arrow. 4. Stormtrooper armour is designed to work against lasers, not ridiculously outdated arrows. 5. Some - but not all - of the Empire's mechanised vehicles were brought down by the ewoks' traps; which were clearly already set up before the battle, I might add. 6. Plus getting on top of a walker and hijacking it from the treetops was little issue for the ewoks, given their familiarity with traversing the tree canopies. The ewoks were very quick at figuring out how to use the Empires' weapons and vehicles against them. I'll also clarify that an actual ground battle was never part of the Emperor's plan. I wouldn't be surprised if everything, from the troopers' lack of camo-colouring, to the apparent incompetence of the biker scouts, was intentional; part of his plan to lure the rebel strike team to the bunker where he himself claimed to have "an entire legion" prepared to trap and arrest them before they could blow up the bunker. The fact that the ewoks attacked at all comes down to the rebels encountering the ewoks by complete chance and actually managing to form an alliance with them - which wouldn't have happened if C-3PO wasn't there. Which highlights what an odd choice he was of who to take on a covert strike-bombing.
@@mitchellhayward6492 plus ewoks are actually really strong for their heights and two or three would easily overwhelm even stormtroopers in melee combat. We even saw this in rotj
Yeah...I kind of figured that the Stormtrooper helmets were hard to see through and use because the Rebels didn't have the authorization codes/clearance to activate the AR displays and aim assist programming. All they could use was the blacked-out, deactivated eye-visor which was the equivalent of super dark sunglasses.
Rex is comparing storm trooper armour to his personalised, perfectly fitting armour that Rex grew up using and trained with. With all the features within storm trooper’s armour Rex could also be struggling to adapt to the different tech in the armour in a similar way that older generations on average struggle to adapt to new technically
For context, blaster bolts in the OT Era explode like grenades whenever they hit something. The fact that a Stormtrooper can take that and still live goes to show how good that armor is. It's like getting shot with a HE round and walking it off like you were just kicked in the chest.
@@helldiverintelligencehighcom Not quite. Lots of SW slugthrowers are good at punching through armor. Imperial Heavy Repeaters and Golan Arms Flechette Launchers to name two.
@@HolyknightVader999 Many of these Star Wars slug throwers that are effective against armor are often purpose built to go through armor the majority of the common slug thowers you find in the Galaxy AKA the Cycler rifles and other similar weapons are extremely low velocity and poor at going through armor unlike weapons here on earth Which would rip through Stormtrooper armor with relative ease.
I used to play the West End Star Wars RPG as a game master. Believe me, Stormtroopers are not pushovers. Its just that main characters have higher stats and plot armor.
My past two gaming shops played both WEG, we grew up on it, and follow into WotC3e. Then house brew what we like from both systems. Like the rules for mediation to gain Force points or Calling on the Darkside. And we played as Storm Troopers. We always worked on raising our stats to wear heavier armor for longer longevity. And be promoted to the 5O1st, or end up as a Crimson Guard. 2.) Strom trooper regs on Idle Chater while on duty. " .. I .. spy .. the color .. blue." Tracking targets wearing or are of a given color, skill/Spot. follow with Track. 3.) Mare Jade stated their barrack humor will make an imperial marine blush. Due to the novel Darksaber, we ran Palpatine view was " you died When HE was done requiring your service." Dice pool roll results were at times unbelievable. Its like the dice was loaded in her favor.
I worked for West End back in the late 80s/early 90s. I remember the editorial team being in direct contact with Lucas to approve every detail that went into that game. The writers assured me that stormtroopers were the Army Rangers of the Empire. Very competent. Special Forces, not cannon fodder. So yeah, NOT pushovers.
That is a good point about the effect of the armor. We see storm troopers often go down, but we rarely see confirmed kills. Many troopers could have been knocked out, or too injured to get back up, but the armor still kept them alive (unless they take several shots, or a powerful enough hit).
What blaster bolts actually do when they hit things isn't entirely clear to me: they're described as energy weapons but they're shown to deliver kinetic force to the target. All evidence indicates that Storm Troopers/Clones wear ablative armor that evaporates instead of conducting thermal energy to the wearer.
I’d say the competence went down as a means to help the good guys win more often. Remember, the first movie when there aren’t any sequels implied Stormtroopers being the elite. Heck, the Empire Strikes Back they defeated rebels on Hoth, took Cloud City and even were winning at the end of the movie. It wasn’t until Return of the Jedi (and other subsequent media) that Stormtroopers became a joke. That idea just stuck and never left as the current creators double down on the lie.
Ehm no absolutely no, Hoth was a tattical victory but an outrageous strategic defeat as the rebel leaderships, the bulk of the troops and their heavy equipment had been succefully evacuated, taking Cloud City is hardly difficult as it was a lightly defended civilian installation so is like saying that the US armed forces are uber badass because they have conquered...Grenada and at the end of the movie the entire facilities has been evacuated again leaving the Empire with nothing.
@@lukedalton It wasn't the stormtroopers that made Hoth a pyrrhic victory for the Empire. It was the Star Destroyer being disabled by the planet-side ion cannon the commanders failed to anticipate. The stormtroopers overran the base with no problems. Until stormtroopers became a meme for not being able to hit characters with plot armor, they were the elites of the Star Wars universe. Everyone short of the Mandalorians feared the arrival of stormtroopers because they were very accurate with their blasters and their armor deflected a lot of damage away from them. In the Star Wars movies and cartoons however, the stories revolve around specific characters that are not supposed to die or even suffer injury in most cases. Take away the plot armor, and stormtroopers are extremely good soldiers. Until Disney and Lucas decided to go with the meme and stormtroopers became a joke because it was expected of them. (Again, because they had to fight main characters that were supposed to be kept safe from harm and death.)
@@J.Falchetti the stormtroopers have not overrun the base with no problem otherwise stardestroyers or not there were no way that they will have been capable to escape, the rebels resisted and had enough time to evacuate the bulk of their equipment and troops plus all the leadeships(hell in deleted scenes the ST have been also eaten alive by wampa thanks to C3P0). It's not a plot armor that the 'elite' troops with all the shiny and cool toys are not that good, the Empire is a damaned dictatorships, worse unlike place like the URSS where ideology had a great part in legitimate the state, the Galactic Empire is basically a personal disctorship and that kind of government don't like efficient soldiers that think for themselfs and have initiative, not considering all the corruption. Sure that they were in universe feared, they were the fist of the Empire against civilian that protested and group of rebels outnumbered and outgunned and there were spot of excellence as Inferno squadron and their version of the Bad Batch, plus the 501st Legion or Thraw 7th Fleet but the bulk of the Empire armed forces? Well look at Fascist Italy or current Russia for a RL example or better the army of Austria-Hungary during WWI (an efficient army for what was intented aka internal control but way of his deep in a real modern war and one through only thanks to German help)
I always thought that their isn’t useless and a lot of times when they go down immediately it’s just because they get incapacitated (basically similar to what can happen when a vest stops a bullet)
When you are discussing the ability to properly function in a suit of armor in the Star Wars universe, there is more to consider than simply proficiency in Light, Medium or Heavy Armor. There are 2 additional categories to consider:Powered or Unpowered. Armor Systems systems like those of the mandatorians, Clone troopers.Or Stormtroopers are powered systems, With an incredibly wide variety of techsystems and functions. Separately there is also power armor vehicle proficiency. But that is a different beast.... Look at the Spacetrooper EVA Battlesuit, Which a fully Armored Stormtrooper pilots from inside. One of the less known features of Stormtrooper armor is the 360° field of view. In addition to your normal forward vision frame, you have two compressed sectors on the outer edges showing what is beside and behind you... No, you cannot see exact 4K Detail but it can Alert you to additional threats. It can be incredibly disoriented to an untrained user. In ANH, Luke, Thoroughly untrained in the armor system. Cannot see, because he can't turn on half of its functions. Meanwhile Han has no difficulty, Due to his experience with stormtrooper armor prior to washing out of the officer/pilot track in the imperial academy and being sent to the regular army.
I believe you do make a good point, Star Wars rarely ever does a after action report on how how many Storm Troopers were just plain knocked out versus being dead after a major battle.
Why does the Algorithm keep skipping over your videos? You know how many stupid cat videos i had to scroll past! I mean damn. You and DIY are the heart of TH-cam.
When I was younger, I theorized that the Empire has number of weapon regulstions which ensure that big majority of civilian weapons are incapable of piercing the Stormtrooper armor. Of course, every rebel and criminal Star Wars galaxy has very good reason to have either illegal blaster models or heavy modifications to their weapons.
The equipment of the Stormtroopers is almost phase III armor, practically speaking. It’s like comparing body armor from wwII to modern Kevlar. Both work, one is just lighter and more reliable with modern materials. The big difference in my mind is still the quantity of soldiers. They could not produce enough clones on Kamino to police the Empire and deal with insurrections. They had to switch to general recruitment because they couldn’t afford to wait an entire decade to see a bump in recruitment numbers. With the Stormtrooper corp they could exceed the number of clones in just one 2 year training cycle because they can be recruited and trained across the galaxy.
@droppeddogs My grandpa was a driver in ww2, he wore a flak jacket. It was body armor with solid steel plates that could stop small arms fire and shrapnel. It was crazy heavy and couldn't stop rifle rounds.
To be fair, if you read the novels, they comment about how Stormtrooper armor is the second best full body armor a person can get in the Star Wars universe. The actual best being actual beskar Mandalorian armor.
There were no practical uses body armor in WW2. 30-06, 7.92x57, and 54r have penetrative capabilities that exceeded any body armor of the time. Early armor was seen in Vietnam, alloy and fabric flak jackets. In the 80s ceramic was being played with, Kevlar was being fielded. The mid 90s would see ceramics become NATO equipment. In the mid 2010s UHMWPE plates would start showing up. Which is the current standard for well funded units due to it being semi-bouyant and impact resistant.
I can’t remember where I read this but if a stormtroopers helmet wasn’t worn by it’s issued wearer via some sort of identification system, none of it’s high tech features would work and it would essentially function like a heavily armored welders mask lol
For the longest time I have figured that the stormtroopers are much like the Imperial Guard in 40k. They get clowned on a bit and often deservedly so. But at the same time, when compared to other military components (especially human ones like the Planetary Defense Forces in 40k) are actually pretty good.
@@whyjnot420 that's true, most imperial guard units are actually elite because they are drawn from the best soldiers of a planetary defence force, as long as corruption is limited of course. The training alone for some imperial guard units definitely puts them above regular soldiers without requiring awesome power armour or massive firepower. Most soldiers just have a lasgun and a couple of grenades, often pairing themselves with light to heavy fire support. Bravest soldiers in the galaxy of you ask me.
From what I remember from an old technical manual that's now legends the storm trooper armor was made significantly cheaper than its clone trooper predecessor. Being more susceptible to breaking from light impacts like falling against a wall or from a strong punch. However most of the cost of the armor was shifted to the helmet which included alot of tech for most of which was a security lockout that disabled all but the most basic functions except in the presence of an authorized user. It's this lockout that cause most to discard helmets as trash since without the codes or in some cases as with the death trooper the right implants no one could use it. In Cannon the armor was still made more cheaply and most of the tech being in the helmet however depending on when it was made storm trooper helmets would come with audio and video recording that the ISB would go over after every shift to make sure storm troopers didn't have any treasonous thoughts or actions. These became a severe liability for the storm trooper since if they're helmets fell into rebel hands before they had a chance wipe the memory the rebels had a complete log of everything that trooper saw and said.
I just though of a really funny scenario involving an old clone sniper: "Gah I can't see shab'la oisk in this thing" Some old clone in stormtrooper armor "There's a way to make it aim automatically for you the targeting system is pretty advanced, maybe I can help you turn it on?" His Rebel ally "It is on you di'kut and I hate having a computer tell me where to shoot!" "Didn't clone armor also have a targeting system?" "Yes but I always took it off for shooting!" Old clone pulls off helmet and throws it at a stormtrooper then says "I have better accuracy with my eyes closed then these guys!" "These stormies are incredibly accurate old man!" The rebel ally responds thinking of the friends he lost to stormtroopers. "Not as accurate as a clone! I'm not just talking 'bout us snipers, the infantry cadets back on Kamino could shoot better than this!" "Yes, you clones but you clones were bred for combat and had a rifle in your hands by the time you could walk. These stormies are still more accurate then most of us rebels." "Bah! I can't aim straight with this thing! Stupid high-tech scope is blocking the iron sights!" the clone rips off the scope "That's problem with making everything so damn high tech, what happened to scopes without screens and processing systems?" "Didn't the sniper rifles used by the clones also have computerized scopes?" "Not mine, mine was an old hunting rifle my Sergeant gave to me!"
People forget that it was fully explained in Rogue One that the only reason the Storm Troopers miss a target such as Luke & Leia is when they were protected by the Force (due to the person having yet to carry out a required task).
unfortunely there a lot of clear example in the franchise that don't involve the force and the aim of the stormtroopers is abysmal...and frankly there are a lot of RL that can be adapted to the Empire armed forces that clearly explain why they suck against real opponent that don't involve fancy theories or complicated ideas
I think that it could just be different technology or maybe something akin to having your iron sights needing to be adjusted/zeroed to each person. I would imagine that the helmet he stole had to be zeroed to his specific head shape/height/other issue. It would only make sense that the insides of the helmet sights were designed for a number of factors and gave a readout for those persons specs. Much like picking up an M16 that has been zeroed for someone else. You use their zeroed point and you'll miss almost every time.
It was the 2nd edition SWRPG that made me realize the armor was pretty damned good. Gave them a +2d against energy weapon damage and had all sorts of built in targeting and sensor units inside the helmet. The first time you get TPK'd by a bunch of TKs, you pay attention when the bone men show up.
I always felt that the Stormtrooper armor was primarily made for protection against the elements, as well as to protect the wearer from shrapnel and flying debris that would be a constant hazard on an active battlefield.
In the old EU the Storm Trooper helmet also was coded in a way that if stolen someone would probably stick out because they can't see as well without the HUD. If you didn't know the code to unlock it, the helmet would be "dark". That helped explain why Luke was having trouble seeing out of the helmet and was complaining about it in Episode IV.
Always thought that all trooper armour had bacta patches to keep the trooper alive long enough for a medic to attend. Which is why you had hospital space stations in the clone war. Also most rebelion agents carried HEAVY blasters to penetrate trooper armour while the Seperatists droids only had light blasters as standard.
Fantastic points, it's likely that helmets were always fitted to the individual user and if the logged biometrics didn't match some microcode inside would prevent polarisation of the visors from changing to 'clear', as evidenced by Han and Luke as well
The idea the helmets made aiming worse comes from the first movie from somebody randomly saying it was hard to see but could also come with the idea that when Luke was saving Layla during first movie the empire temporary gave them helmets that were flawed on purpose to make it they had no way to be accurate because as you said Darth Vader wanted them to escape. A forced upgrade that they reverted claiming the helmets preformed horribly after the fact so storm troopers could not give up the details Vader wanted them to go free.
Though it was in a comedy youtube fan film. They had a Stormtrooper doing a demonstration with the Stormtrooper's standardized blaster when it came in. But he couldn't hit anything with it. And after analyzing it, he found that the sights on the blaster were interfering with the targeting system in the helmet. If this were canon, it would mean that Stormtroopers had blasters that couldn't shoot straight because of a flaw in their design that later had to be fixed.
I do believe there are some quality issues with stormtrooper armor and equipment. The Empire may have had deep pockets, but massive sums were poured into Star Destroyer production and the construction of the first and second Death Stars. Then there were oversight programs to observe imperial forces and identify slackers or traitors. Then Palpatine’s side projects for his “somehow” return. The list continues. It’d be natural for there to be budget cuts in a few places.
When running the west end Star Wars RPG's my players constantly wanted Storm Troopers or Scout Troopers armor because it was the best stuff out there and it saved players lives. Storm Troopers utility belts were also highly prized. And as a standard weapon they preferred the E-11. This was over several different gaming groups.
Yeah, my gaming shops groups played with if the storm trooper up his stats, they paid for double plate armor out of their own pocket. Or go with upgrade power suit armor with electric insulated protection cover with durasteel magnetic charge to deflect blaster fire. Like the trash compactor magnetic seal door. We didn't deal with the Cp character point nonsense and just went with basic training time. So if you are of a given age, you had a given upgrade in stats. Come on they / you can start the game at reduce stats as a 12year old. Just word problem math your way up to the stander point pip buy cost to a generic adult of a given profession.
I think of modern armor in discussions like this. Real life armor will save you, but you will still get bruised and perhaps broken bones from the shots it absorbs. Even in Bomb Squad armor, you're pretty likely to survive, but most bombs will send you to a desk job, if not full pensioned retirement with the injuries that do get through. I can imagine that half or more of the STs in the Tantive's hallway in the boarding scene survived. The force of the Rebel blasters being spread out and turned into an extra potent stun, knocking out the ST for a couple of hours, instead of minutes. With energy distribution like that, a normal stun blast could still be just as potent as without armor, but more likely reduced by a small amount, depending on the thickness, etc.Just like being hit by a truck delivers a similar blow as a large bullet through modern armor. The truck wouldn't kill you if you don't have the armor, but it will still bruise and break bones. Even if it's less with the armor, you still get hurt.
Ive always felt storm trooper armour as being like wearing a very good very light anti flak suit or old school kevlar vest pre inserts . If you are hit with any sort of fragments you will likely be totally fine(as you said from Tantive 4 attack when a lot of the rebel troops go down to close hits and fragmentation but the stormtroopers dont). If you get a full rifle round in the chest it will probably do you in but a pistol it might help. The mandalorian armour is like having an suit of full plate. Its great itl protect you against almost anything but as you get closer or get hit by something big it wont work against everything up close and it does have weak points for movement.
By the time of the original trilogy Stormtroopers were replacing the army as the Empire's standing force. Overburdening them would lead to logistical problems like sub par armor depending on where it was made and weapons. The Stormtrooper corps would of had highly different levels of competency due to how stretched and recruit starved they would of been.
Haven’t finished the video, but I’m wondering if the rebels that use the helmets turn off the electronics to prevent the empire from knowing it’s a rebel wearing it, since stormtroopers helmets have recording devices that allows command to monitor their comm and in-person chatter. With the electronics off, the helmets don’t provide any kind of aiming assist between the helmet and weapon, making aiming difficult with the helmet turned off.
your point about being hit by the stun bolt is key as Rex literally couldn’t see well because of the electrical systems going down in the helmet so it’s hard if not impossible to fight with severely limited visibility and barely functioning life support systems…
When I hear all the tactical systems put inside of the stormtrooper helmet, and look at their accuracy, one idea comes to mind. What if it's too much information being displayed in that helmet? Too much targeting data being put on the hud could distract the stormtrooper. Sure, in more controlled fights where the parameters are clear and the battle orthodox, it's probably a massive boon. But in the chaotic situations of asymmetrical and unorthodox tactics that Ghost Squadron and the rest of the rebellion fight with? It's probably more of a hinderance than a help.
@@Gabiman66 huh, I never noticed that. Is suppose against small arrows the plastic would have helped a bit, certainly better than no armour at all. Probably wouldn't do too much against a direct shot to a less protected part of the body, but still useful.

I think it’s important to keep in mind that Star Wars blasters are basically using HEAT rounds like ones used in tanks. HEAT or High Explosive Anti Tank burns through 200+ mm of steel. The armor on the troopers is only a couple mm.
@@Burning-Twilight yeah it’s why they’re not a solid beam. Plasma is burning through similar to how a heat round shoots its molten jag of metal through the armor, but has little post pen effect.

@@olivercattanach2680the Wookiees had about 30-40 sets of armor and Han said it could be melted down and recast. The electronics in the helmet could be stripped out and sold so it was highly profitable
It’s important to note that the armor might survive a number of low cost blaster shots, but it won’t guarantee they survive blasters designed for armor piercing capabilities. In both lore versions, the DH-17 blaster and the a280/a300 models for example were armor piercing weapons specifically chosen for that and midrange. And of course it doesn’t mean they’ll be impervious to melee weapons as the Ewoks and Boba Fett have shown.
I remember pre disney storm trooper armour was designed to take an average of 5 bolt hits before failure. That was the info given in one of the starwars tech manuals.
Rex having helmet issues - besides all that advanced tech and customization and stuff, I remember back when I was in the army, first month we went on a training in the woods, where the sergeants and corporals made it their life mission to make the recruits trip up. For example, during a weapon maintenance drill a sergeant would start some conversation with you, while a corporal would sneak up and swipe a component of your weapon to swap it with another recruit's - the receiver seemed to be their favorite component for this swap. then after the maintenance drill we'd be lined up and told to thorroughly inspect (as in take apart again) our weapons, and there'd be some dumbasses (myself included that first time) who'd discover that the serial number on the receiver didn't match the serial on the other parts. And then the whole platoon would get crap for a whole week. they also did similar things with the rest of our gear, and one time that resulted in me ending up with another recruit's helmet and gas mask - and then I got dragged out of the cabin that was used for our biochemical training because that gas mask became a vomit-mask... as for the helmet, that thing was so loose on my head that it kept knocking my head with every move. the guy who ended up with my helmet couldn't even put my helmet on properly because of the size difference. add to that all the tech and stuff from the star wars universe, and yeah, clone's gonna have problems fitting a stormtrooper's helmet.
@@sundragon7703 tbf the range of stun rounds is significantly lower than that of regular blaster rounds so unless you're up close, say 20 - 30 ft with a stormtrooper which is a very dangerous place to be, you wouldn't be targeting them with stun rounds as their would disperse a lot more than blaster rounds. That said EMP grenades would be very useful, but I imagine that after the Clone wars they were a lot less common, with the empire being the only legal client/supplier.
Huge missed opportunity in Force Awakens. In the falcon Han takes the stormtrooper helmet and says “you can’t see a thing in these” to which Finn replies “you have to turn it on” and flips a switch inside the helmet. Queue Han Solo surprised face.
Also, the narrow field of view would help ignoring casualties. Would help keeping this dreadful demeanour of being unfazed under fire. Like how we shield the horses eyes to help them ignore distractions happening in the peripheries.
another thing that i see very few people notice is, in the original trilogy stormtroopers are firing dozens, if not hundreds of rounds towards the rebels, and almost all of them are really close misses. you have to be really accurate to do that on purpose especially against a moving target, it's honestly almost as impressive as hitting 100% of your shots.
Regarding marksmanship, a lot of the inaccuracy could be chalked up to the whole thing of bad guys in a lot of media being bad shots due to plot armor reasons, this is a common trope seen in many series, Stormtroopers probably get most of the flak because it's pointed out in one scene making a point of their accuracy and being inconsistent with their on-screen portrayal. As for Rex's comments, it could be contributed to the armor not being suited for him, as he wouldn't be used to wearing it, and he might not be familiar with the helmet's optics, if they were even working after being stunned. Now, another point I want to make is that those helmets would have to make use of additional sensors. If they lenses were the only way to see out of it, you're not going to be seeing much, and a similar effect would be noticed with certain gas masks, goggles, and medieval helmets in our world, they protect the eyes, but cut off vision to a degree. And if those additional sensors were not working, perhaps due to a stun round, then of course visibility would be horrible.
In terms of equipment, the armor of the stormtroopers is better, since the external components that the clones used is their helmets, the imperial stormtroopers already had it integrated, not to mention that they had the ability to integrate additional equipment. It should be noted that the purpose of their armor, being composed of plastoid, is not precisely to protect them from gunfire, but as a survival suit that gives them adaptability and comfort in hostile environments. Another reason why Rex did not see anything may be because each Sormtrooper has an assigned armor. In case someone else is wearing armor that doesn't belong to him, the tactical functions are blocked. It should be noted that Stormtroopers had brutal training and were considered the best assault troopers after the clone troopers. They were an elite force that fulfilled specific functions, the regular troops of the empire are like those seen in Andor or Han Solo on the planet Mimban.
Back in the old tabletop RPG stormtrooper armour was one of the best common armours you could lay your hands on. If you wanted something better, you'd really have to look into getting it made specially for you. Good stuff.
Another reason for the apparent ineffectiveness of Stormtrooper armour was given by Han Solo in one of the novels. I can't remember if it was during the NJO, Dark Nest, or Legacy of the Force books, but he was mentally noting during a firefight how fighting Stormtroopers was a lot easier than his current opponents because the weak points in Stormtrooper armour were common knowledge among Rebels, especially ones who had defected from the Empire. Oh, and wasn't there a security feature in Stormtrooper armour that disables most of the extras in the helmet when it is forcibly removed? I know the wearer has to trigger a mechanism with their tongue before they take the helmet off otherwise it scrambles the comms. If that also applies to the HUD, then that might be another reason why Luke was having trouble in A New Hope... though in that particular instance, I've also heard it said that Han knew how to work the HUD but Luke didn't.
clone armour was tougher...but when it failed the clone died. Stormtrooper armor dropped the troops easier, but the trooper usually survived. burned and and in pain, but able to go back into the field again... ...unless they went down in a place where Ewoks could get them when they were unconscious. Then they died screaming after they woke up on the spit.
Tbf soooooo many film & anime also have people shooting thousands of rounds that never hit, and also have armor that does nothing unless a main character is wearing it.
In the SW D6 RPG, clone trooper tech is a lot less nice than storm trooper stuff. But yes, the suit and helmet are stuffed with electronics, that would definitely fare poorly against ionizing rounds. I do particularly like the scout trooper helmet/setup, with targeting aids for moving targets, macrobinoculars, low-light vision, comlink, and a sensor pack. It's possible to buy these features for aftermarket install, but they are insanely expensive! Good thing my character is a tech geek :)

The clone/storm trooper armor is what we call "ablative armor"
It is a material with a low sublimation point (the temperature where a solid transitions directly into gas without melting first).

I think some of those old republic wars really set the galaxy back like a few centuries
Skip to the clone wars and your ship is slow if it's anything higher than a class 2, and just 20 years later the Millenium Falcon and Slave I had class 0.5

tbf the ewoks used very aggressive guerrilla warfare against the stormtroopers who were probably really overconfident due to the trap palpatine set up. Not to mention ewoks used projectiles like arrows and rocks, both if which will just shatter and pierce stormtrooper armour.
The ewoks also beat Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. So...
@@rivenarchon333 That's true. maybe ewoks are just OP

Wow! I never looked too much into Clone Trooper and Storm Trooper armor but this was a very informative video! Thanks Allen!!

@droppeddogsflak jackets existed and yes I know they weren’t for infantry but that’s bc they were so heavy.
@@J.Falchetti that and Disney Starwars habit of cheap comic deaths for Storm Troopers. The OT was not that bad until the Endor Battle.
Oh it's Generation Tech. I thought it was Carl filling in for Allen again.

Yeah .. definitely nailed it... Been taking Death Sticks from the nearby Dolphin club again eh Allen??
I just though of a really funny scenario involving an old clone sniper:
"Gah I can't see shab'la oisk in this thing" Some old clone in stormtrooper armor
"There's a way to make it aim automatically for you the targeting system is pretty advanced, maybe I can help you turn it on?" His Rebel ally
"It is on you di'kut and I hate having a computer tell me where to shoot!"
"Didn't clone armor also have a targeting system?"
"Yes but I always took it off for shooting!" Old clone pulls off helmet and throws it at a stormtrooper then says "I have better accuracy with my eyes closed then these guys!"
"These stormies are incredibly accurate old man!" The rebel ally responds thinking of the friends he lost to stormtroopers.
"Not as accurate as a clone! I'm not just talking 'bout us snipers, the infantry cadets back on Kamino could shoot better than this!"
"Yes, you clones but you clones were bred for combat and had a rifle in your hands by the time you could walk. These stormies are still more accurate then most of us rebels."
"Bah! I can't aim straight with this thing! Stupid high-tech scope is blocking the iron sights!" the clone rips off the scope "That's problem with making everything so damn high tech, what happened to scopes without screens and processing systems?"
"Didn't the sniper rifles used by the clones also have computerized scopes?"
"Not mine, mine was an old hunting rifle my Sergeant gave to me!"
The Ewoks didn't live on a planet, they lived on a moon.
I've been waiting for that intro for years.
hello there Alan XD I just love when you do the shuffled intros :P
“Hello Alan”.
Fantastic points, it's likely that helmets were always fitted to the individual user and if the logged biometrics didn't match some microcode inside would prevent polarisation of the visors from changing to 'clear', as evidenced by Han and Luke as well
You make some compelling points.
Thanks Alan👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
We still haven’t been shown what the hud in their helmets looks like, I’m dying to see that!
There is some artwork I believe that shows this.
oooooh porkbun ad, nice! been using them forever. love to see it.
A forced upgrade that they reverted claiming the helmets preformed horribly after the fact so storm troopers could not give up the details Vader wanted them to go free.
they are special forces. they don’t need flaws to miss their targets on purpose
Military Grade just means lowest bidder
When running the west end Star Wars RPG's my players constantly wanted Storm Troopers or Scout Troopers armor because it was the best stuff out there and it saved players lives. Storm Troopers utility belts were also highly prized. And as a standard weapon they preferred the E-11. This was over several different gaming groups.
yeah makes sense, when you scale up something to that size you got make sure you don't mess up its design
"Hello Alan."
Well, I'd better pay attention to this video then.
Geezzz Carl .. 😂...you got the best content !! Keeper Goin'
Thank you carl 😭😭
Haven’t finished the video, but I’m wondering if the rebels that use the helmets turn off the electronics to prevent the empire from knowing it’s a rebel wearing it, since stormtroopers helmets have recording devices that allows command to monitor their comm and in-person chatter. With the electronics off, the helmets don’t provide any kind of aiming assist between the helmet and weapon, making aiming difficult with the helmet turned off.
your rain noise in the background had me checking out the window for rain every minute of this video
your point about being hit by the stun bolt is key as Rex literally couldn’t see well because of the electrical systems going down in the helmet so it’s hard if not impossible to fight with severely limited visibility and barely functioning life support systems…
In episode 6 we see the stormtrooper shoulder pads deflect ewoks arrows
@@Gabiman66 huh, I never noticed that. Is suppose against small arrows the plastic would have helped a bit, certainly better than no armour at all. Probably wouldn't do too much against a direct shot to a less protected part of the body, but still useful.
@@olivercattanach2680 it wasnt super noticable but its clearly visible if you pay attention in a specific moment, the arrow doesnt even leave a scratch
I think it’s important to keep in mind that Star Wars blasters are basically using HEAT rounds like ones used in tanks. HEAT or High Explosive Anti Tank burns through 200+ mm of steel. The armor on the troopers is only a couple mm.
Blasters operate more like plasma based weaponry than actual lasers.
@@Burning-Twilight yeah it’s why they’re not a solid beam. Plasma is burning through similar to how a heat round shoots its molten jag of metal through the armor, but has little post pen effect.

@@reginaldshort8486 getting a hold of stormtrooper armour would be very rare, as not only do you have to take out a stormtrooper and flee unscathed form the rest of the squad, but you also have to get past imperial security which is likely to frown upon individuals owning stormtrooper armour, as the equipment would still be useful to the empire as well as the importance of stormtroopers themselves

Hello there, Generation Tech! We're Alan and, we love new episodes of friends!
I did notice in the Mandalorian, that Stormtrooper Armour didn't stand up too well against blunt trauma like Gaffie Sticks and the Armorer's Hammer.
Palpatine's "best troops" lost to a bunch of teddy bears via literal sticks and stones.
I love when Alan throws in random messed up intros
Odd, EMP weapons were not widely uses against stormtroopers. Frying the electronics of the stormtroopers would give their adversary a big advantage.
Dinsey saw the deathstar escape from ANH and just assumed StormTrooper were all saturday morning villina grunts
Hello there Tech, welcome back to another episode of Allan, I'm Generation Friends.
Tbf soooooo many film & anime also have people shooting thousands of rounds that never hit, and also have armor that does nothing unless a main character is wearing it.
Interesting.
