Why storm troopers miss is probably trigger discipline and not leading shots. The Targetting get overused and abused and probably struggles VS a moving target. The Targeting is a necessity because the training is probably poor and favors macho "Potemkin" style training rather good trigger discipline training and teaching the actual fundamentals properly. The suits are good, the training is not.

Just like rogue one, stormtroopers were feared by many rebels due to their aggressive tactics and precision and their fanaticism and willingness to die for Palpatine. Even if the stun round didn't affect the armor's electronics, i remember reading somewhere that storm trooper helmets are linked to the owner.
In a new hope Luke couldn't see anything out of the helmet because he didn't own that helmet so all those hud features were switched off meaning he was stuck looking through thin eye holes through polarized glass with no help from the helmet. Rex probably couldn't see anything out of that helmet because it was switched off too. Clone helmets didn't have an on switch, they just worked. You can see through it. Sure did help those commando droids pull off a clone trooper act when they can easily see through the helmet.
Also i don't think that was Tarkin's plan to put a homing beacon and let the rebels go. His attitude towards Vader tells me that was Vader's idea and it was a ploy he made before. Vader put a homing beacon on a shuttle so when the ghost crew stole it and returned to their fleet, it triggered and lead Vader right to them.

I think that a lot of people forget what a blaster to the body actually does, and that the armor is not designed to stop the round as much as it is to disperse the energy contained in the shot. Since the shots are plasma they would literally boil flesh, blood, and organs. The armor disperses it, and there are small details in some of the clonewars battles where we see the aftermath and many of the downed clones are not dead but knocked out or just too injured to get up on their own. Sometimes the downed clones move a little in ways like raising their arms or rolling a bit, which would be similar to someone being shot in a bullet proof vest. One medium to high caliber round would knock them flat on their back and break a rib or two, and it can take a few small caliber rounds, but too many and it is ineffective, or too powerful and they still die.

Same with modern plate carriers- I doubt ceramic plates can take a ton of shots before shattering into glass shards and dust- but it kept your insides IN, and kept bullets from getting in as well. However you may have broken ribs- which will make you down- but not out. Well out for that battle perhaps but you aren't dead, just too wounded to fight.
The best option is to utterly tank the shot so you just feel like someone punched you hard and can keep fighting- the next best option is to just keep you alive at all.

The clone/storm trooper armor is what we call "ablative armor"
It is a material with a low sublimation point (the temperature where a solid transitions directly into gas without melting first). When heated, the armor will rapidly evaporate, whisking away tons of thermal energy from the target and creating a dense cloud of gas that could diffuse further directed energy temporarily.
Most real world ablative materials naturally degrade over time when exposed to things like heat, sunlight, RADs or strong enough EM fields.

    • @Sue_Me_Too

@@CrysResan Ceramics are normally part of a composite armor system which both contains at least one other bullet resistant material (Kevlar) and can usually hold the shattered ceramic pieces in place after taking a hit. Other ceramic armor uses a bunch of small, overlapping plates to avoid the shattering issue.

The ewoks had a lot of tactical advantages over the Imperials.
      1. An ewok is much smaller height makes them a smaller target.
      2. They blend into their environment much better than soldiers in white, plastic armour.
      3. You can see a bright, glowing laser bolt, hear it clearly, and judge where it's coming from much easier than an arrow.
      4. Stormtrooper armour is designed to work against lasers, not ridiculously outdated arrows.
      5. Some - but not all - of the Empire's mechanised vehicles were brought down by the ewoks' traps; which were clearly already set up before the battle, I might add.
      6. Plus getting on top of a walker and hijacking it from the treetops was little issue for the ewoks, given their familiarity with traversing the tree canopies. The ewoks were very quick at figuring out how to use the Empires' weapons and vehicles against them.
I'll also clarify that an actual ground battle was never part of the Emperor's plan. I wouldn't be surprised if everything, from the troopers' lack of camo-colouring, to the apparent incompetence of the biker scouts, was intentional; part of his plan to lure the rebel strike team to the bunker where he himself claimed to have "an entire legion" prepared to trap and arrest them before they could blow up the bunker.
The fact that the ewoks attacked at all comes down to the rebels encountering the ewoks by complete chance and actually managing to form an alliance with them - which wouldn't have happened if C-3PO wasn't there. Which highlights what an odd choice he was of who to take on a covert strike-bombing.

Heck, the Empire Strikes Back they defeated rebels on Hoth, took Cloud City and even were winning at the end of the movie.
It wasn’t until Return of the Jedi (and other subsequent media) that Stormtroopers became a joke. That idea just stuck and never left as the current creators double down on the lie.

Everyone short of the Mandalorians feared the arrival of stormtroopers because they were very accurate with their blasters and their armor deflected a lot of damage away from them. In the Star Wars movies and cartoons however, the stories revolve around specific characters that are not supposed to die or even suffer injury in most cases. Take away the plot armor, and stormtroopers are extremely good soldiers. Until Disney and Lucas decided to go with the meme and stormtroopers became a joke because it was expected of them. When you are discussing the ability to properly function in a suit of armor in the Star Wars universe, there is more to consider than simply proficiency in Light, Medium or Heavy Armor. There are 2 additional categories to consider:Powered or Unpowered. Armor Systems systems like those of the mandatorians, Clone troopers.Or Stormtroopers are powered systems, With an incredibly wide variety of techsystems and functions.
Separately there is also power armor vehicle proficiency. But that is a different beast.... Look at the Spacetrooper EVA Battlesuit, Which a fully Armored Stormtrooper pilots from inside.
One of the less known features of Stormtrooper armor is the 360° field of view. In addition to your normal forward vision frame, you have two compressed sectors on the outer edges showing what is beside and behind you... No, you cannot see exact 4K Detail but it can Alert you to additional threats. It can be incredibly disoriented to an untrained user.
In ANH, Luke, Thoroughly untrained in the armor system. Cannot see, because he can't turn on half of its functions. Meanwhile Han has no difficulty, Due to his experience with stormtrooper armor prior to washing out of the officer/pilot track in the imperial academy and being sent to the regular army.

The equipment of the Stormtroopers is almost phase III armor, practically speaking. It’s like comparing body armor from wwII to modern Kevlar. Both work, one is just lighter and more reliable with modern materials. The big difference in my mind is still the quantity of soldiers. They could not produce enough clones on Kamino to police the Empire and deal with insurrections. They had to switch to general recruitment because they couldn’t afford to wait an entire decade to see a bump in recruitment numbers. With the Stormtrooper corp they could exceed the number of clones in just one 2 year training cycle because they can be recruited and trained across the galaxy.

From what I remember from an old technical manual that's now legends the storm trooper armor was made significantly cheaper than its clone trooper predecessor. Being more susceptible to breaking from light impacts like falling against a wall or from a strong punch.
However most of the cost of the armor was shifted to the helmet which included alot of tech for most of which was a security lockout that disabled all but the most basic functions except in the presence of an authorized user. It's this lockout that cause most to discard helmets as trash since without the codes or in some cases as with the death trooper the right implants no one could use it.
In Cannon the armor was still made more cheaply and most of the tech being in the helmet however depending on when it was made storm trooper helmets would come with audio and video recording that the ISB would go over after every shift to make sure storm troopers didn't have any treasonous thoughts or actions. These became a severe liability for the storm trooper since if they're helmets fell into rebel hands before they had a chance wipe the memory the rebels had a complete log of everything that trooper saw and said.

"These stormies are incredibly accurate old man!" The rebel ally responds thinking of the friends he lost to stormtroopers.
"Not as accurate as a clone! I'm not just talking 'bout us snipers, the infantry cadets back on Kamino could shoot better than this!"
"Yes, you clones but you clones were bred for combat and had a rifle in your hands by the time you could walk. These stormies are still more accurate then most of us rebels."
"Bah! I can't aim straight with this thing! Stupid high-tech scope is blocking the iron sights!" the clone rips off the scope "That's problem with making everything so damn high tech, what happened to scopes without screens and processing systems?"

The Empire may have had deep pockets, but massive sums were poured into Star Destroyer production and the construction of the first and second Death Stars. Then there were oversight programs to observe imperial forces and identify slackers or traitors. Then Palpatine’s side projects for his “somehow” return. The list continues. I think of modern armor in discussions like this.
Real life armor will save you, but you will still get bruised and perhaps broken bones from the shots it absorbs. Even in Bomb Squad armor, you're pretty likely to survive, but most bombs will send you to a desk job, if not full pensioned retirement with the injuries that do get through.
I can imagine that half or more of the STs in the Tantive's hallway in the boarding scene survived. The force of the Rebel blasters being spread out and turned into an extra potent stun, knocking out the ST for a couple of hours, instead of minutes. With energy distribution like that, a normal stun blast could still be just as potent as without armor, but more likely reduced by a small amount, depending on the thickness, etc.Just like being hit by a truck delivers a similar blow as a large bullet through modern armor. The truck wouldn't kill you if you don't have the armor, but it will still bruise and break bones. Even if it's less with the armor, you still get hurt.

If you get a full rifle round in the chest it will probably do you in but a pistol it might help. The mandalorian armour is like having an suit of full plate. Its great itl protect you against almost anything but as you get closer or get hit by something big it wont work against everything up close and it does have weak points for movement.

Too much targeting data being put on the hud could distract the stormtrooper. Sure, in more controlled fights where the parameters are clear and the battle orthodox, it's probably a massive boon. @@reginaldshort8486 getting a hold of stormtrooper armour would be very rare, as not only do you have to take out a stormtrooper and flee unscathed form the rest of the squad, but you also have to get past imperial security which is likely to frown upon individuals owning stormtrooper armour, as the equipment would still be useful to the empire as well as the importance of stormtroopers themselves

It’s important to note that the armor might survive a number of low cost blaster shots, but it won’t guarantee they survive blasters designed for armor piercing capabilities. In both lore versions, the DH-17 blaster and the a280/a300 models for example were armor piercing weapons specifically chosen for that and midrange.
And of course it doesn’t mean they’ll be impervious to melee weapons as the Ewoks and Boba Fett have shown.

Rex having helmet issues - besides all that advanced tech and customization and stuff, I remember back when I was in the army, first month we went on a training in the woods, where the sergeants and corporals made it their life mission to make the recruits trip up. For example, during a weapon maintenance drill a sergeant would start some conversation with you, while a corporal would sneak up and swipe a component of your weapon to swap it with another recruit's - the receiver seemed to be their favorite component for this swap. then after the maintenance drill we'd be lined up and told to thorroughly inspect (as in take apart again) our weapons, and there'd be some dumbasses (myself included that first time) who'd discover that the serial number on the receiver didn't match the serial on the other parts. And then the whole platoon would get crap for a whole week. they also did similar things with the rest of our gear, and one time that resulted in me ending up with another recruit's helmet and gas mask - and then I got dragged out of the cabin that was used for our biochemical training because that gas mask became a vomit-mask... as for the helmet, that thing was so loose on my head that it kept knocking my head with every move. the guy who ended up with my helmet couldn't even put my helmet on properly because of the size difference.
add to that all the tech and stuff from the star wars universe, and yeah, clone's gonna have problems fitting a stormtrooper's helmet.

Odd, EMP weapons were not widely uses against stormtroopers. Frying the electronics of the stormtroopers would give their adversary a big advantage.

@@sundragon7703 tbf the range of stun rounds is significantly lower than that of regular blaster rounds so unless you're up close, say 20 - 30 ft with a stormtrooper which is a very dangerous place to be, you wouldn't be targeting them with stun rounds as their would disperse a lot more than blaster rounds. That said EMP grenades would be very useful, but I imagine that after the Clone wars they were a lot less common, with the empire being the only legal client/supplier.

another thing that i see very few people notice is, in the original trilogy stormtroopers are firing dozens, if not hundreds of rounds towards the rebels, and almost all of them are really close misses.
you have to be really accurate to do that on purpose especially against a moving target, it's honestly almost as impressive as hitting 100% of your shots.

Regarding marksmanship, a lot of the inaccuracy could be chalked up to the whole thing of bad guys in a lot of media being bad shots due to plot armor reasons, this is a common trope seen in many series, Stormtroopers probably get most of the flak because it's pointed out in one scene making a point of their accuracy and being inconsistent with their on-screen portrayal. As for Rex's comments, it could be contributed to the armor not being suited for him, as he wouldn't be used to wearing it, and he might not be familiar with the helmet's optics, if they were even working after being stunned.
Now, another point I want to make is that those helmets would have to make use of additional sensors. If they lenses were the only way to see out of it, you're not going to be seeing much, and a similar effect would be noticed with certain gas masks, goggles, and medieval helmets in our world, they protect the eyes, but cut off vision to a degree. And if those additional sensors were not working, perhaps due to a stun round, then of course visibility would be horrible.

In terms of equipment, the armor of the stormtroopers is better, since the external components that the clones used is their helmets, the imperial stormtroopers already had it integrated, not to mention that they had the ability to integrate additional equipment. It should be noted that the purpose of their armor, being composed of plastoid, is not precisely to protect them from gunfire, but as a survival suit that gives them adaptability and comfort in hostile environments. Another reason why Rex did not see anything may be because each Sormtrooper has an assigned armor. In case someone else is wearing armor that doesn't belong to him, the tactical functions are blocked. It should be noted that Stormtroopers had brutal training and were considered the best assault troopers after the clone troopers. They were an elite force that fulfilled specific functions, the regular troops of the empire are like those seen in Andor or Han Solo on the planet Mimban.

Back in the old tabletop RPG stormtrooper armour was one of the best common armours you could lay your hands on. If you wanted something better, you'd really have to look into getting it made specially for you. Good stuff.

Another reason for the apparent ineffectiveness of Stormtrooper armour was given by Han Solo in one of the novels. I can't remember if it was during the NJO, Dark Nest, or Legacy of the Force books, but he was mentally noting during a firefight how fighting Stormtroopers was a lot easier than his current opponents because the weak points in Stormtrooper armour were common knowledge among Rebels, especially ones who had defected from the Empire.
Oh, and wasn't there a security feature in Stormtrooper armour that disables most of the extras in the helmet when it is forcibly removed? I know the wearer has to trigger a mechanism with their tongue before they take the helmet off otherwise it scrambles the comms. If that also applies to the HUD, then that might be another reason why Luke was having trouble in A New Hope... though in that particular instance, I've also heard it said that Han knew how to work the HUD but Luke didn't.

clone armour was tougher...but when it failed the clone died.
Stormtrooper armor dropped the troops easier, but the trooper usually survived. burned and and in pain, but able to go back into the field again...
...unless they went down in a place where Ewoks could get them when they were unconscious. Then they died screaming after they woke up on the spit.

In the SW D6 RPG, clone trooper tech is a lot less nice than storm trooper stuff. But yes, the suit and helmet are stuffed with electronics, that would definitely fare poorly against ionizing rounds.
I do particularly like the scout trooper helmet/setup, with targeting aids for moving targets, macrobinoculars, low-light vision, comlink, and a sensor pack. It's possible to buy these features for aftermarket install, but they are insanely expensive! Good thing my character is a tech geek :)
