I got a laugh out of that since so many people bought into the marketing hype that the PS2 was light-years ahead of previous game consoles.
Dude, they used one of the cons of a console (Ghosting/Game Gear) to make the game full of sprites, madmans.
Just as M2 strives to preserve gaming history, My Life in Gaming continues in their mission to educate gamers, young and old, about where gaming as a culture came from and where it's going.

Thank you M2 for not only helping with videogame preservation, but thinking and going a step further in making them feel fresh by adding helpful stuff, making new assets for the game and even creating new games altogether. This is one of the best videos on TH-cam - great work guys. The thing that I love about M2 (and former companies like Toaplan, Irem, Naxat, Compile, Treasure or Cave) is that they don't just do their work at a game developing company - no they simply love games & are game fans. That's exactly the reason I always loved Japanese games more because Western developed games are made by business decisions first - the problem with that is - the soul is missing. Hooray for companies like M2.
M2's commitment to preserving games as best as possible, remaining true to the original experience, is always a treat. They truly are the masters of modern emulation and ports; their work is always fantastic.
Great documentary. The 3DS port of Streets of Rage 2 rekindled my love for that game and it is now one of my favorite videogames ever, so seeing the ammount of work they put in it makes me want to personally thank M2 for it. They always go above and beyond.
I'm so glad a company like M2 exists, to pour the love and respect into these ports that the games deserve - every one of their ports that I've played has been not only the absolute best in class versions I've experienced, but even that I could imagine. This video has made me appreciate their efforts even more, and increased my determination to support more of their work - the upcoming SEGA Megadrive Mini went from a dismal sounding affair to an absolute must-buy, simply by SEGA announcing that M2 will be handling it. Long live M2!
I just wanted to add my congratulations to an amazingly produced film. This shows TH-cam at its best: original and informative, premium quality video and editing, and utterly fascinating to watch. Thank you M2 and My Life In Gaming!
The PS4 rerelease of Battle Garrega made the game completely playable for me since they included the option to changing the color of enemy bullets. I had a difficult time seeing the bullets in the original and this change made the game one of my favorites. Fantasy Zone 2 W is another amazing title I'd love to see ported again in the future.

tbh ... this documentary is far better than 95% of the "professional" high budget documentary available on TV / Netflix etc.

Great documentary on some really talented guys who have a deep passion for the games they give to us again. You don't see many in the gaming industry willing to give the fans all this, and more (extra content, hell yeah) in this day and age.
Usually when I have something on to watch, I end up doing something alongside the watching. Like a TV show marathon while playing a game.
Watching this had my entire focus for the whole thing. Couldn't bring myself away from it. Fan-freaking-tastic job, you guys.

M2 is great and I appreciate their history and dedication. I was so happy to hear that M2 would be developing for the Genesis Mini releasing this year so im definitely gonna pick that up as I'm sure it will be great just as their Sega Ages games on switch have been :D Long live M2!
I'm really excited they're handling the Turbografx mini too, but I really hope they get a translation of Snatcher on there. Leaving it in Japanese so English speakers couldn't play it would be the biggest shame :/
This was well worth the wait guys! I really loved hearing about how M2 and SEGA had so much history between each other, and how M2 handled all the many challenges of porting and effectively recreating these games across so many generations. BTW, I know it's a lot of work to put together these long form videos, but I absolutely love em. Keep it up!

I was really looking forward to this one, and you guys totally delivered! It's truly fascinating seeing a historical look at the modern masters of emulation. Also, not to take away from the quality of previous works, but your skills at producing projects like these are noticeably improving; It's very clean editing and pacing-wise.

I feel blessed to have lived through and experienced the 70s, 80s, 90s, the golden age of gaming. No nostalgia here. Just pure gameplay and love of art. They weren't trying to loot box you. They built empires on brilliance, not exploitation.

Outstanding job on this documentary. I've long revered M2, they truly are a 'Treasure'. I dearly hope they someday port Daytona USA and SEGA Rally to the Switch. The original Virtua Fighter would be incredible too given the phenomenal job they did with Virtua Racing.
M2 belongs to the very best developers hands down.
Recently played their ports of Out Run & Virtua Racing on my Switch, and they are absolutely perfect.
Especially Virtua Racing is simply Gold.
You guys have come such a long way. Fantastic documentary. We need companies like M2 now more than ever.

This was a total blast to watch and learn even more about a company that brings me so much joy.
I have about three compilations emulated by M2 and some retro digital games as well, they go above and beyond to emulate games near perfect or perfect for modern hardware. With notoriety M2 has im hoping more gaming companies look to them to emulate their retro gems. These documentaries you guys put together are top notch and deserve to be on streaming platforms like Amazon Video, Hulu and the like.
M2's dedication to authenticity is inspiring. So is the quality of this channel's documentaries!
This is a beautiful masterpiece. I honestly cannot put into words how incredible this is and how much I love it. It’s a shame it had to be just 1 hour long. You guys are awesome, and this is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen, even above some of my BBC2 favourites.
There’s a reason why you guys are my favourite TH-camrs of all time, and this is it.
Just finished Phantasy Star on the switch and these guys knocked it out the park. Id been wanting to play this game, but its barrier of entry was a bit too steep for me. They weren't lying about the "old guy' mode it really made it an enjoyable experience(Lassic still was no joke and guys make sure you bring a transfer😉). Great job on the video you guys continue to raise the bar. This is what happens when two great content providers come together, thanks for the hard work, it is appreciated!

I had NO IDEA these guys were behind Gauntlet IV on the Genesis! That was one of the games I played as a kid. I never got into the campaign mode when I was super young, but after having played my first few RPGs, I got curious and read through the instruction manual. It was amazing! It really made Gauntlet feel like a unique experience on the Genesis, even compared to the arcade original (which of course, I didn't have access to). I think it's a bit of a hidden gem on the console, actually.
Congratulations! Your M2 documentary is absolutely fantastic. You've gone above and beyond, again, to give us something that we've never seen before. Thank you for your love of games and your desire to share that with us.

Brilliant documentary. Just like M2, My Life in Gaming always manages to deliver something faithful with an extra flair not usually seen in TH-cam.
I did not know anything about M2 before this video and thus, wasn't sure if this documentary would sustain my interest. One hour later, and my mind is blown with a new respect for these genius gentlemen and the magic that they work. Great documentary, I feel like I truly expanded my knowledge and appreciation of gaming.

Ever since I played the 3DS port of Gunstar Heroes, I have nothing but the utmost respect for M2 and doing more for the games of the past than simply copy pasting a rom, sell it and call it a day. Seeing their history from their beginnings to now really makes me appreciate the company even more. I look forward to whatever M2 has to offer in the future.

I still remember M2's first game, the fantastic Gauntlet 4 for the Genesis. Man that game was dope, and what a soundtrack! Best soundtrack on the Genesis for sure!

M2 quickly became one of my favorite game developers. As someone who grew with many Sega games here in Brazil, its nice to see someone care about other Sega games apart from the typical Sonics and Mega Drive collections. Still saddens me how much of these amazing works never release outside of Japan or Nintendo consoles. Hacking my 3DS was one of my best decisions in gaming, i got to discover the amazing Sega Fukkoku Archives trilogy and some cool old Sega arcade titles like Power Drift.
In 51:30 i like how he mentioned the "wrilling" sound the goal post makes and how it should sound, bacause this is something many bad Mega Drive emulator fail to reproduce. Its a good way to determine if the emulator is good or bad.

Fantastic documentary. I at first thought it may be some prototype games that were supposed to be released on the 3DO M2 upgrade, but I was pleasantly surprised by this game developer company instead. Their commitment towards recreating as perfect an experience as possible to originals is simply baffling and appreciated.
Outstanding documentary, love M2, and love so much what they are currently doing with M2 ShotTriggers (as of 2023), hope they port every awesome arcade shmup/STG to the nintendo switch physical library.
This was a great well made documentary type video guys. It took me a while to get into the right mindset for it and actually watch it in a few sittings, but the subject matter was awesome thanks so much for taking the time with it and making it so well made. I’d love to see the odd similar ones in the future. Equally guys don’t forget to just be yourselves have your own opinions and views, since that is why I come back!

I love this series I hate that I can’t get the other sega compilations on my 3ds in physical format unlike japan. Y couldn’t Nintendo make the 3ds region free. I love m2 hope to play shinobi soon on my switch. I wish they did sf 2 30 anniversary. Great company please never lose your way and teach the young ones the right way

Another simply excellent long-form documentary from MLiG. M2 is truly a special studio, and this documentary really shows off why. The only thing I'd nitpick about is that the documentary doesn't really give a good idea about the sheer experience the people at M2 have. For example, interviewee Tokuhiro Naito is the man who created Hydlide, one of the grandfathers of Japanese action-RPGs, which shows that the company has people that truly knows their stuff with older hardware.
Of course, I'm sure people would be (wrongfully) poking fun at Naito in the comments, should his pedigree actually have been acknowledged in the documentary.

Amazing job, you guys. Only one flaw in this otherwise perfect documentary: anyone who needs subtitles (presumably most of us) can't see many of the title cards for the interviews since the subtitles cover many of them up. Don't be afraid to buck the trends and put that info in a corner or up on top.

I'm so impressed with M2 I will buy any game or compilation they bring to my Nintendo switch. We need their games physically too. If not a standard retail at least use limited run games.

27:43 MSX was not a Japanese exclusive computer. Infact it was more of a computer standard that was popular mainly in Japan, and Europe where it was popular mainly in Benelux countries.
