  • I recently purchased the new Rovyvon A5 flashlight out of interest in how it would compare to what has become one of my favorite lights for the trail, the Rovyvon A5x from a few years ago. In this video, I go over the updates to the flashlight and how it compares to the previous generation. I hope this video helps any of you that might be undecided with whether or not to upgrade, or if you are just looking to purchase a new flashlight in general.

    I'm pretty sure you are comparing the A5X (which I think is gen 2) to the A5 gen 4. There is a A5 gen 3 which has the magnetic clip and attachable tailcap as well.

    Love your content Mat. Any other gear items like this that you find is becoming one of your favorites?
    After using dozens of lights on trail for bike packing, backpacking, off-roading, and hunting, this little Aurora A5 is being added to my kit.
    Your choices in gear seem to be in line with where I am headed in the UL side of my kit.
    Appreciate all your knowledge shared with us.

      @@ToolsTrucksTrails Thanks so much! I have more content in the works including a video going over some of the gear l've been using this year so keep a lookout for that. As for lights, along with the RovyVon in this video, I've also really enjoyed the Nitecore NU25 over the years (and have been digging the updated NU20 classic lately: th-cam.com/video/yPpGXxi2VRo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Z71HE54yh9j6OTJp). I also purchased a Flextail Zero pump out of interest earlier this year and have been pretty happy with it so far. Not necessarily something I would bring all of the time, but it has its merits and could be nice for bikepacking (or even backpacking) trips.
      For bikepacking, I've been happy with the Dynaplug over the years (I run tubeless with my gravel bike) and a pair of Wolf Tooth pack pliers. Ombraz sunglasses have also been fantastic for backpacking and wearing with my helmet on bikepacking trips. Thanks again. I appreciate your questions, and am happy you've been finding my channel helpful and that you've been enjoying the RovyVon light!

    Splash Flash: It's much cheaper, lighter, energy efficient, water-proof and has no button to fail. I've never met anyone else who uses one, and I have no connection with the company. I believe you'll never use anything else once you try it.

    Thanks for this nice overview and comparison. I have the g3 and was wondering if the g4 would be worth it. I think I’ll get the g4 for EDC and keep the g3 in my backpacking kit. I have an original garmin mini that takes micro USB, so can’t go fully USBC yet.

    Hi knowledge ! It me again! I bought the flashlight 🔦 and there is a mystery … it switches which light setting comes on first somehow after the 2 button pushes. It was on the moonlight setting for awhile but now it’s not again. 😂

      @titanostrongman Nice! Hope you've been enjoying the flashlight. I haven't experienced that with the light settings on mine. Sorry that I can't help with that one.

      @@matjobin no worries! I just wanted to share the mystery! Mine actually went back to the moon light setting again yesterday hahaha. Happy spring to you !

    I’ve been thinking about getting one of these for my night walks in the neighborhood, i try to look quickly in dark areas at night so i don”T step on the slugs and worms n things. Question. If you hit the button will it go back to the last lumen setting or will it start off at the lowest? Thanks for the feedback. You have a great channel and i hope you keep at it. I watch it often.

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @titanostrongman It’s a fantastic light! Holding the button down will power it on the highest setting. Going from off to powering it on, mine has always started with the brightest setting and then cycles from lowest to brightest again. It won’t go kick in at the last used setting when powering it back on unfortunately. Thank you! I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the channel and appreciate you watching. I’ll definitely be continuing to add more content to it.

      @@matjobin thank you so much for the quick and kind response! Super good to know info. Do you ever hike on the west coast at all? The northeast is beautiful and I used to hop trains and travel other ways through there.

    Great video! Thank you! Funny story, well, at least to me: I bought this flashlight a week ago, but didn't really spend much time learning the settings. Now, my wife and I are camping and I couldn't remember how the sequence of buttons worked for which functions. Mat Jobin to the rescue. In camp, I used my phone to find this video and in no time, you'd taught me what I should have memorized before we left home! Thanks, Mat!

    Is there any way to go directly from off to red light without passing through a white light mode with the Gen 4?

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @wanttogo1958 Unfortunately not. The only way to get to the red light with the Gen 4 is to cycle through the first two white light settings. My Nitecore NU25 still holds the edge when it comes to that. It has a separate button for the red light that allows for it to go directly to that from off mode.

      @@matjobinI use the NU25 as well. I do like the area light feature of the light you reviewed. Possibly I might consider it as my backup in the winter months when darkness comes earlier.
