I feel like if you just watch dance by yourself, it takes a few years to *really* understand what you're seeing and appreciate the skill level. But if you watch your shit, it can speed up that understanding. Doesn't take as long to understand WHAT you're seeing and WHY its skillful/at a high level

This exchange was so good. Spider was crazy here. Spider couldn’t do something here to match energy level to Laurent
Lau being a savage and I am here for it. Much love to Spider too. I just felt Laurent flowed with the music better. Especially within his movements and displayed a wide range within his rounds . Lau also seemed patient and embodying the music more like he became one with it. But much love to spider though.
This event is def made for lau. The lack of time limit allows him to really show his range and tap in.
I appreciate spider's patience and build up but I feel like once he's tapped in going beast mode he loses energy and momentum.
After the third round of Laurent obliterating the dance floor, Spider had to accept was like, "at this point I ma have to accept that this is not a fair match. I'm being cooked like a pot of beans right in front of the world"...

Spider was lacking stamina. But he offered some really strong rounds against Junior in the Top 8 !
@@snagc4b427 He lacked stamina and development of the story he was telling with his rounds. He seemed to get stuck on certain moves whereas the Twins are always shifting and morphing between cadences and styles and narratives within their dance rounds.

When there's no time limit and L.O can just COOK... very few can stand in front of him. I'd love to see him versus BouBoo in such a dance competition.

Maan, lovee the way you breaking it down. When you say laurents dance has volume. He’s a freak of nature. His physic is certainly a big advantage when it comes to dancing. The only thing that doesn’t click in my mind is how flexible he is given how tall he actually is. He could pop and lock in wierd positions that require flexibility and strength. Not only that, he stays present, he breathes, listens to music carefully and brings the beat into existence. Fucking godlike power

For me I guess one thing I struggle with is that I'll always end up either getting stuck in a beat pattern, and attack it over and over again which is gonna limit my movement a lot, or I'll focus on developing my movement but I wont be able to catch the beat patterns because of it.
Another thing is that I always end up in the same pockets, and whenever I'm on the verge of developing something new, I kind of get scared and end up stopping the process which can feel very frustrating.
In general, I think i'm too passive in the sense that I watch dance videos and make observations, but I dont implement those observations into my practice. As a result workshops have never been really helpful for me (just like what you talked about with slim and jaja in paris)

I think Spider being bigger makes him not able to do a consistant round especially when its longer like in BTM thats just my feeling.
Laurent's rounds really looked way more complete and got more flow if that makes sense.. spider was crazy but I felt his rounds was kinda limited to the beats of the music

Spider seems to be telling a story. But it seems he used that concept through most of his rounds. Skill and innovation has to be apart of the dance beyond just concepts and story telling. Laurent did his thing. I have to give props when it’s deserved and how he took spiders corner like that now that’s a battle. Own the time bc it’s your time

6:31, I thought Spider's set was over, and I think Laurent also thought Spider's set was done because it looked like he stopped dancing, so Laurent did a walk around, but Spider started dancing again, so Laurent chilled. I don't think he meant any disrespect. I think he was just hyped to start his set. I thought both dancers were excellent.

Ya some dancers communicate just right what they're embodying [in the moment] but sometimes* overstate the overall mood throughout. I always have this anticipation as to the progression overall throughout like a buildup to a release yet after that we see a whole new sentence with maybe a few hints of what was and the channeling into the now and what to expect or hope comes forth as expected from elite for the unseen and awe*. anyways thanks before i go rambling on, always great to collaborate :)
This finna be a long comment but need to give the Love back to the Doc for his perspective. From witnessing these performances « Live and in the Flesh » I can say that you definitely hit some spot because even tho Im a big fan of Spider I disconnected from some parts of his rounds due to what you said BUT I don’t think it’s only due (or mostly due) to him being more limited or more structured because at his btm exchanges (the old ones from ytb I know you seen the one against Kuty ) he really do not feel as much restricted and repetitive, to me at least. But in this one he still delivered at high level, got me going crazy and to me he’s part of the reason why Laurent went that hard ( I mean he even got O’Boy poppin in this bih😭 ) especially because when I saw Laurent battle against Le K nothing felt particuliarly special althought Im big L.O fan and I was even kinda disapponted because it didn’t feel all that different from the clips we’re used to see (first time seeing him live). But I really felt it seeing him go against Spider.

Then I get breakin, then Ballet,then I get sign language dance. So if you could just sum it up for me if you could please. Still love your commentary.. your always killing it! Yes, so back in the old days, this would of been called breakin! But now there are so many different styles added does it have a new name for per say "each person's style" or is it still considered breakin? I think what each person does is absolutely amazing and incredibly talented. I guess is it still called breakin or what is the name for this type of dancing called something else? Thanks Doc!

Haven't commented in a min, but here goes my dissertation 😂😂. I'm finally getting a better understanding of your dance philosophy. Spider's attitude seemed more chill at moments with less moments of thoughts about pulling his rounds together. With the time longer than most battles, I feel like he could have amped up or down, showed more diversity?? maybe, that's a better word. I like the guy so don't come for my comment. He had amazing moments too 18:30 - 20:26 I wish his round was reversed, came in slow/calm ended with more interesting choices. It has to tax the body to go that many rounds anyway. Laurent's dance vocab let's him find oportunities that some may miss. If he slows down to get into the music, he'll give you something special in those spaces between; i.e. 7:20 -9:52. I do enjoy your funny moments. One day, I'd love to interview you about dance. I write about it quite a bit. *Did you hit the LIKE?* I did Metal, chill man 😂 😂 One band, one sound, one love
This is how events should be conducting battles. I'm tired of seeing this 1-2 minutes time limit BS. It never allows dancers to fully explore, experiment and express.
I totally agree but this spider is not spider I know. Probably he was tired or he was trying too hard. His mindset wasn’t right. Laurent was getting better each round, I mean vs Max was his complete round. If the battle was 1 min the result may be different.

I’m always disappointed in the TH-cam footage of the third round because I’ve seen Instagram video of Laurent making amazing fish mouth expressions early on in that song which were appropriate and vastly entertaining. I love your commentary. I think it might be easier for Laurent to immerse himself in the story of any music and naturally commit to the emotion. He seems to drag the viewer into the music with him as if he can be present in two different dimensions. The way he and Larry grew up together, losing themselves in movement and music practically from birth, must be partly responsible for the enormous vocabulary. Les Twins are very sensitive to artistry, culture and silent expression of any sort. I have never seen a dancer with such a dance lexicon. In France, when young people learn dance, they are usually introduced to all kinds of dance to some extent. The first thing that shocked me seeing Laurent and Larry for the first time, was their ability to strike balletic postures and the grace in their hand movements. Again, thank you for such an interesting discussion. ⚜️♥️⚜️
