Every single day I am being bullied by homophobes as they dogpile on my posts, harass me, insult me, talk over me, claim they're going to take our rights away, posting photos of woodchippers and calling us the P word. I'm Christian. More specifically, Roman-Catholic. One of my best friends is bisexual and I have two (male) friends who are gay. I LOVE these guys. More importantly, I love them the way they are. I don't run around telling them how sinful they are and I don't insult them by telling them I'm going to "pray for their conversion" or "pray away" their sexual orientation. I think it's absurd, I think it's a slap, and I will...not...DO that. Gay and bisexual people can no more help being gay or bisexual than straight people can help being straight, and as a Christian, hating or demeaning others because of their sexual orientation IS NOT MY JOB. (Nor is it my job as a Christian to berate people whose skin color, national origin, or mother tongue is different from mine.) That IS NOT how God works. Finally, even though I will always believe in God, I will still say this: Religion without love is useless. It doesn't matter how faithfully you attend Church, go to Synagogue, spend time at the mosque. If you don't have love in your heart for your fellow human beings, none of those other things matter.

You are right. That IS bullying; no doubt. It is true that the Teachers can't simply say "don't" and have the kids obey... I am a teacher (preschool) and know that we are not Angels or Demi-Gods to make kids be otherwise than they are. BUT! That does not mean it's ok. That does not make it "not bullying". There is pressure on teachers to PRETEND that everything is how it is supposed to be, especially if there is no obvious way to fix an isolable problem. What we need is "TRUTH". Admit the truth; that there is bullying. That it is NOT ok but that teachers can't make it stop by themselves.
Then go from there. Work together: Teachers & Principles & Councilors & Bullied Students and Bullying Students and Parents and ALL. It will be loud and aggressive and people will have their feelings hurt. BUT ALL OF THAT IS ALREADY TRUE. It is happening anyway. We can't get past where we are until we acknowledge that "HEY! There is a problem, this is not working" and go forward. Some people will not like whatever partial-solution is reached; some parents will pull their kids and go elsewhere. BUT at least it will bring the Truth into clear view, and make reality match perceived-reality and then allow policy to deal with reality. Hard, painful, terrible... but only way to go forward.

I don’t know what group was especially targeted for bullies at my school. I lived very much in my own bubble and with my perspective and mine alone. It’s hard to tell what others perceive and feel in their life, especially when you are a kid. So I think it is great that the schools are trying to help broaden the perspective of the kids so that they learn to be more attuned to what others might feel. Sadly it has not worked as intended, and I hope they can listen the kids and work towards a solution to stop the bullying.
