    This is the second part of how to sketch a root locus by hand. However instead of following the normal rules for sketching a locus that you'd see in a book, I decided to explain the rules how I use them, and how knowledge of the shape of a root locus can help you design a compensator.

    Thanks to everyone who requested the Matlab demo. If there is strong enough interest in a topic I will try to cover it, and it sounds like there is for this topic. I'm going to use Matlab to design the controller for the robotic car videos that I'm putting out every other week. I'll cover root locus again there. Stay tuned! :)

    Hi Brian. Thank you for your great work! I am writing a test tomorrow on the root locus method and you helped me to completely understand it in 40 minutes. I just had to go look up the techniques on how to determine the exact intercepts of the curves, but after this it was easy! For a guy that's a bit lazy when it comes to class attendance, this is a life saver. The prof and the textbook uses so much jargon and excessive amounts of math that this looks really difficult, but it really isn't. The proofs and math can come after you've got the concept. So this is great!! I'm off to watch a few videos about bode plots as well... Greetings from South Africa!

Because of you I'll be able to finish my homework I've been stuck on for days! Forget George Washington and Isaac Newton, they need to teach us about you in school! Brian Douglas, my hero!

  • @BrianBDouglas
    @BrianBDouglas  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Michael, you've come across a tricky one! If you simplify hp it will be more obvious. hp = -6 * (s-1)*(s+1) / (s*(s+2)*(s+3)). When you solve for the root locus you are adding a gain, k, in line with this. However, since the gain of this transfer function is negative (-6), when you sweep k from 0 to +inf, the gain actually goes from 0 to -inf. This flips the root locus to the other side. In matlab you can do rlocus(-sys) to get the positive gain root locus.

    Jesus Christ these videos are so good. Why don't professors teach like this guy. I understand you have to learn all the theory, proofs and derivations. I'm ok with that but they never "close the loop" by telling you why all this matters. What the big picture is. I stopped reading my controls book and decided to watch a few videos on youtube. It is amazing that I can watch 30 minutes (two videos) from this guy and save myself 3 hours of time if I were to read the book and work the examples. These videos are great.
