      Yeah, but no, because all the non-native americans must've come from somewhere in Europe. I read it in the history books before they were rewritten. How many generations past do you need in order to be recognised, it's a conundrum for some, and that's why I've got three citizenships, and that's not a joke. Is it time spent in that country, ideally growing up, or a documented bloodline, or maybe a few certificates that enable others to accept you, Or, can one just not give a fk and simply be kind to others regardless...

    It’s just a shame many US politicians, Biden included, seem to fundamentally misunderstand the dynamics & realities of Northern Ireland.

Ireland does not scrounge "free defence", if some other country somehow appears to defend Ireland they do so for their own strategic purposes and not for Ireland's.
      I might also remind you that the EU republics of Austria and Malta are neutral yet I don't see any criticism of their positions in these comments.
      Ireland has no enemies, few naturals resources and is of little strategic use to any other country other than the UK and they have already experienced Irish "hospitality" so they will not be coming back.
      Small countries with smaller resources can never hope to defend against a determined enemy with larger resources however in saying that Ireland does need to boost it's Air defence ability and I believe this is going to be done but it will have to be done carefully to maintain Irish neutrality ie. sourcing equipment from neutral or non aligned sources.

      Ireland is liked by the US because both countries have similar culture and both had to struggle for self determination from the British Empire many Americans also have Irish heritage, the US likes the underdog because it once was there itself. Ireland is also a business friendly nation where prime US companies have invested many many billions of Dollars over the decades because of Irish work ethic and high levels of education. On the flip side Ireland despite it's small size is the 9th highest inward investor in the US. Irish people and their efforts have helped more than most shape and build the US over the centuries.

      the UK was America's bridge for interests in Europe prior to Brexit. Post Brexit the UK is quite frankly not very geopolitically useful to the USA outside matters of defense, as such this bridge or "special relationship" as the brits liked to call it has basically ended. Outside of this, Ireland and the USA have always held quite a close relationship as the US has quite a large Irish diaspora within its populace, and with the UK no longer being within the EU, Ireland fills this bridge role quite well. So essentially, Ireland has a lot of geopolitical influence within the USA due to its diaspora and the US needs a new seat at the EU table and Ireland has always been willing to play ball. It is just beneficial for both parties at this point.

    • @aengusryan5948
      @aengusryan5948 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For the US, Ireland is its entry point into the European market, a market of more than double the US population, so plenty of buyers for American goods there. Also, Ireland is the only English speaking country in the European Union, so very easy for US companies to locate there (also attracted by Ireland's low tax rates). There are currently over 700 of the top US companies with their European locations in Ireland, so the economic fate of both countries is linked. That coupled with Bidens Irish heritage, the large Irish-American vote he appeals to in the US and (and this bit is a guess) his possible distaste for UK presence in Northern Ireland, would all account (IMHO) for Ireland's relevance to the US.
