- Colchester is a town in the county of Essex, in southeast England. In the Castle Park, Colchester Castle is a huge Norman keep, built on the foundations of a Roman temple. Its museum displays artefacts up to 2,500 years old. Also in the park is Hollytrees Museum, a Georgian townhouse displaying 3 centuries of clothing, clocks and decorative arts. Nearby, in the Dutch Quarter, are the remains of a Roman theatre.
Colchester is described as 'Britain's First City'. Nearly 2,000 years ago Colchester became the first captial of Roman Britain, but it has been classed as a town for centuries.
Colchester town centre offers a fantastic shopping experience, with specialist independent shops sitting alongside large department stores and some of the biggest names in retail. You can browse through the historic lanes of the town as well as enjoying the latest high street trends in its contemporary shopping arcades.
Whilst shopping, you can effortlessly explore Colchester's unique history intertwined throughout the town centre, you will pass within minutes of the town's main attractions, and find yourself spoilt for choice with the range of places to eat.

Colchester was my old hometown i left in 1995 at the age of 26 i have fond memories of nights out at The Bakers Arms on Magdalen St in the mid to late 1980's and The Hole in the Wall or The Three Cups or Arts centre. All changed now i would imagine, i remember the old police station on Queen Street back in the day.
I notice the Odeon is now on Head St, it was on crouch Street in the mid 1990's, shops have changed however the layout is familiar to me nearly 30 years on.

I'm very sad that so many of the best features in the town / city centre were missed out! It seems that the man filming doesn't know Colchester, as he missed out Trinity Street and the ancient church of Holy Trinity with its lovely Saxon tower, the Elizabethan Timperleys (just opposite) house (now a restaurant) and delightful garden, and very close by is tiny Red Lion Yard which opens out onto the High Street. The picturesque ruins of mediaeval St Botolph's Priory, Colchester Castle and its beautiful park, the very modern Firstsite arts gallery, and, just a very short walking distance from the Roman and medieval walls is the picturesque St John's Gatehouse. Also, the modern Mercury Theatre, with the impressive Roman Balkerne Gate set into the Roman Wall as that descends down the hill, showing a length of the fortification to the west of the ancient Roman city. I hope that visitors will enjoy discovering these and other fascinating places in and around our ancient city.

I take it this is pretty common for most UK towns? a lot of shop space that appears derelict especially where the CO-OP used to be. Does the CO-OP still exist? The old Hippodrome, I´m amazed it is still going, I remember it back in 1991!
