i have similar device. Motor makes humming sound when rpm are not at full rpm. motors resonate or something and thus makes sound. it's particularly annoying with silent low rpm fans ie ventilators for home usage in silent environments
Does this mean a universal AC motor (like from a washing machine) is a constant impedance machine? i.e. as voltage is reduced so is speed? I'm just afraid it is a constant power machine where voltage reduction leads to increased current and thus overheating.

I don't know. Look when you want to step down AC. Its going to be difficult. Its better to use DC motor and Step down. But if you want to use AC its better to use three-phases motor. So you can do anything you want. You can convert to the single solution
This voltage regulator is not working for every devices. 1 its best you use direct current then you buy direct current voltage regulator . 2 if you use more then 1000 watt you have to use three faces motor and regulator.
Definitely not! These sort of devices need a resistive load, like a lamp or water heater to operate. Some motors will also work but electronic devices would not and would likely be destroyed.

Its probably because it outputs a square wave ac instead of sine wave so definitely don't use anything with it unless its a resistive load

Resistive loads and series motors. It is NOT designed for induction motors (ventilators, compressors, etc).
