  • Here's a little vlog of our family fishing excursion down to Gold Beach, Oregon. We hauled in a number of salmon while boating the mouth of the Rogue River, so if you enjoy fishing videos, here you go! (If you don't, not to worry, we'll be back to the usual softroadingthewest content next week!)

      We obviously mostly eat frozen salmon because it gets stocked up, but I always *love* getting to eat it fresh right out of the river. In fact, I always have a little sashimi snack right on the dock when John fillets the fish...no sushi restaurant could ever have fish so fresh it was just swimming an hour or two ago! :-)

      The jet boats were running this week. We've done it once a few years ago. I was skeptical about the whole thing, but ended up truly enjoying it...the wild part of the river you get to is truly beautiful and inaccessible any other way. Was definitely worth it. :-)

    Donald, you need to start throwing a fly rod in your truck when you’re out on these backcountry excursions. The rivers around Oregon are perfect. I’d happily throw my gear in the truck too and join you. Lots to see and do. Stay safe and keep posting the quality content.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always carry a tenkara rod with me, I just almost never have time. I did fish for about five minutes during my northeastern Oregon trip in June - and I did actually catch a fish - but the footage wasn't great and felt a little out of place in an already-long episode, so I didn't include it. I'll keep looking for more opportunities to work in a bit of fishing here and there. :-)

    I grew up bass fishing in the midwest so I was used to fish that put up a good fight. Then I moved to Alaska. Everyone told me what a big a fight with a silver salmon could be but as I was familiar with catching bass I kind of blew it off. Oh boy, was I mistaken. I thought I had hooked a whale that could turn on a dime and swim about 80 mph. It took me totally by surprise what hooking a silver was like. I fought that fish for what seemed like a good 15 minutes and finally I was so tired I just started walking backward up the bank to land what turned out to be about a twelve pound fish. Something I'll never forget.

    Great video, nice fish. Up here in ‘Washinslee ‘ we’re not allowed to keep wild salmon like those you guys caught (with an adipose fin). And usually as they did this year one or two days after the fish actually start to show up in numbers they close the river.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We just have to mark on our tag whether it's wild or hatchery. I believe there are seasonal limitations on wild Chinook, sometimes you can take them, sometimes you can't. I know there was wild coho coming up the river at this time also; we didn't hook any, but other boats were reporting catching & releasing them...I believe you can only keep hatchery coho.

Now that he's moving to Gold Beach - and he does have his own boat - there may be more opportunities in the future, possibly more along the lines of trout fishing on a lake. Personally I'd rather eat trout, though they're not nearly as fun to land as these big boys. :-)

  • @metaxaanabeer
    @metaxaanabeer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice fish but even better nice boat. Can you use barbed hooks/treble hooks down there? I ask because we (BC) are required to use a single barbless hook. With that set up you'd never be able to point your rod tip down as you guys were or you lose your fish 50% of the time.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, treble barbed hooks for salmon. And we still lose fish regularly. The technique I was taught (which Colin demonstrates well on his catch) is to reel down to the water then pull the whole rod upward to draw the fish closer. We dive the rod tip down into the water (as my dad demonstrated a few times) when the fish darts under the boat to avoid it tangling in the prop. Single barbless hook...wow. We do have that rule for trout fishing in certain specific streams, but that must make hauling in a salmon quite a challenge!

    • @metaxaanabeer
      @metaxaanabeer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@softroadingthewest Yes, tip up to the sky at all times and constant pressure on the line. If the fish turns on you and runs towards the boat they can spit the hook easily. Still fun tho, even if limits and gear, etc are regulated down.
